The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

You're right, he doesn't have good taste I forgot. Too bad as "Renaissance" looked spectacular when I saw a short bit of it on Starz in SD. I can only imagine that the movie would look mindblowing in HD.

about into the wild - really good PQ. i'd say 4.5/5 on HDD scale

AQ is good, but there's not much there that would take advantage of really good audio

i really enjoyed the movie, i vaguely heard about the story, but didn't know too much

only downside is the special features are all 480i, but the movie is about 2.5 hours so i guess they ran out of space. i was going to check the disk size, but AnyDVD won't load it, says it needs to download an update and the update does nothing

after watching this and every other movie up for best picture/actor, I'm surprised Emile Hirsch and this movie weren't nominated.

Just finished watching Into the Wild. PQ is really nice. Movie's quite good as well. Hirsch wasn't even mentioned in the Oscars for his role? Snubbed. The last 20 minutes were incredibly poignant and well-done. I couldn't imagine them translating the book any better than they have.
Huh, maybe emailing is key?

I always call them.
Just got an email back from them and they gave me another $3 :applause:
all of a sudden good taste=foreign films that no one cares about..

i have pans though :)
For some reason he equates liking shit made in Asia and places outside of America as being good. He even said that he thinks his "good" taste is in line with others like dallow, even though dallow has stated in the past he doesn't like Asian cinema.

Also he always ends up posting about movies no one seems to care about besides himself, and you never see anyone quote him to discuss one of these movies. I have yet to see anyone else besides him mark out over shit like Volcano High. He has mentioned that movie at least 10 times and no one else has ever brought it up.

And honestly I don't even know why he even keeps up with HD considering he is a traitor and turned his back on the format he pimped out like crazy. Hell he even had his user title about HD for a long ass time, but he went out and ditched his player for a Blu-Ray player.

Anyways I am done ranting. Glad to hear that Into the Wild was worth the purchase. I watched the last two Matrix movies tonight and I was suprised at how much I enjoyed them. It had been a few years since I last saw them, and while they are still inferior to the first, they held up pretty well. Those were definately films made to show just how awesome HD media really is.

On another note, is the Animatrix download that comes with the trilogy a 48 hour download or a permanent type thing? I kind of want to watch it, but I just want to be clear on the type of ownership I get with it before I do.

Triplets Of Belleville is an awesome movie...one of my favorites.

How about you actually WATCH "Volcano High" first? I don't just throw a net over these films, sorry to disappoint you and I like Foreign films in general though I will readily admit I lean towards the Asian side.
I also was greatly disappointed hearing the "Spartacus" review so try to place me in the box.
You referring to the "HD DVD side of MykeVermin's brain" because he ended up whining about it like a little baby? That's why I changed it.
The big reason I am big on hooking up with a BR SA is Sony Pictures Classics. VERY few companies on either side have filled the gap with Foreign films. Also even catalog it's been a problem though Warner has been exemplerary in providing this product and past this Universal has been 2nd with various results pqwise on titles, with a smattering of product from Paramount and almost NONE from Sony. I'm kinda thinking 80's and older now in this context. The only other that comes to mind providing is Starz/Anchor Bay and SLIGHTLY FOX under MGM.

Awesome!...on another note, I just got a check from selling some stocks so I'm leaning towards picking up The Island.
Is "La Vie En Rose" any good?
If you like classic French music, it's wonderful.

If you like a stunning biopic of a complicated woman, it's wonderful.

I'm getting this on BD from Amazon France.
I was elated she won the Oscar.

I know that the hd dvd player has lost its appeal because of its downfall but just think of how cheap the hddvds will be! They will be really cheap really fast then they will vanish and be really hard to find. Plus even If I was thinking of selling I would onl get say what £30? most?. I like it as an extra tray to play dvds and such... even though it cost £115 + 5 defunct dvds oh well.

Dude don't call them defunct DVD's. These are movies in HD, some even with Lossless sound as well.
To call them defunct DVD's indicates the product is NOT HD.
Hey has anyone seen "The Lawless" available on HD DVD anywhere or did that even manage to get released?

So over on Slickdeals they have a thread saying at CC if you bought a HD DVD player within the last 3 months, you can trade it in for credit towards a Blu Ray player.........

Also B2G1 at Warner

Newegg has the A20 for 99 bucks. I think I might just grab one of those and be done with looking for a 1080p player. I really want an A35, but I think for the price this would be the way to go. I would just give the A3 I have to my parents since I think they are about to get an HDTV.

Might be a YMMV thing and not as good as some online places but Best Buy has all HD-DVDs 30% off.

Just picked one up on Amazon for the upconverting. I know I missed out on the 5 free offer but is there any way to get in on it? I will have the upc, just need a receipt from Feb. Where would I have a chance at finding this?
Might be a YMMV thing and not as good as some online places but Best Buy has all HD-DVDs 30% off.
Yeah that's in the deals section, I'm not sure if it's YMMV either...the two BBs I've been to this week DID have it going on.

30% is nice, but they can do better. Once we get to around half-off I may pick up one or two "Feh, may as well..." titles.

While there yesterday, I was helping some guy out who only owned Blu-Ray. Not surprisingly, one of the first things he said was "I know these are better than these" (pointing to the HD DVDs)...oh well. Perception is everything.

I did explain the format war and how the formats are nearly identical in less than 30 seconds, which was impressive. He kept taking hits off his inhaler while I explained to him that although he was looking for Bee Movie for his kids, it would be a while before he could get it on high def since the HD DVD was cancelled and no one knows about a Blu-Ray release. He sadly walked away, perhaps to die. Seriously, that dude was having some issues with his lungs.

The End

The original I Am Legend ending leaked out and...it blows just as much as the theatrical one did.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35857

A mix of the two wouldn't be that bad. Just nix the part where
the lady and kid make it to the compound
and replace it with a
tweaked version of them driving out of the city broadcasting the message without Will Smith
The original I Am Legend ending leaked out and...it blows just as much as the theatrical one did.
I thought it was MUCH better than the original ending. It is closer to the book in that he
realizes that the "vampires" have become their own society and have established their own normalcy, relationships, etc. He also realized that he had become a monster to them, a legend - much like dracula is a legend to us.
I would have been much happier with the movie with the alternate ending.

Yeah but
they make no real attempt to portray the monsters as intelligent creatures capable of thought/emotion. It's insanely hard to imagine that they would let Will Smith walk out, fix the girl and than just walk away with the way they were built up.

It's the same reason I think the sequence with the vampire dogs sucked.

It wasn't built up properly. The super vampire goes from "stood in the light for a few seconds" to "setting a super complex trap just by watching Will Smith" to "communicating that he wants his girlfriend back and not immediately destroy Will as soon as he opened the door" all over the course of what; a few days?

Super lame and it's a shame since the movie had so much potential.

This is a development and test tool. If you're looking to make your own HD DVDs or play around with some HDi - have at it. If you think this will allow you to playback ripped discs you have stored on a hard drive, it will not. The emulator is a great tool for testing HD DVD projects. If you're looking for something that will just playback content, use the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on (which you would already have), or buy a Toshiba HD DVD player for under $100, or buy the Cyberlink PowerDVD player that will play that other media format as well. Seriously, I think the emulator is great (Andy does good work), but it's not much fun outside the context of HD DVD development.

It's pretty useless for anybody without a HD-DVD burner

Well I think this is the last I order from deepdiscount. Copy of End of Days does not play and I have to seend it back. I'm just unsure as to if I have to send it back in the box it came in or can use a USPS package. Online I thought it said it has to be the box it came in yet on the paper that came with it, it said I can use a USPS package. Also looks like I have to pay the shipping back so will that get refunded or not? If anyone that has had to send something back to them can let me know thanks. Also out of the 14 HD-DVDs I ordered the first 5 were shipped the way I paid for. This second set of 3 have no tracking number so I would say they are being sent USPS and not UPS.

i dunno seems like advanced primates, with a hierarchy of Alpha Male and Female. Obviously the book is better, but thats not a movie ending.

Not true. You can develop HD DVD content and burn it to DVD-R (DL preferable, obviously). This is called 3xDVD, and it an official part of the HD DVD spec. Basically you burn a red-laser DVD in the HD DVD format as if it were an actual HD DVD blank. Run time is limited (70 minutes/no extras for a DL, if memory serves), but for small projects, that will often be enough.

Now this is what I have been most excited for all along. Now that HD DVD is dead, it can truly live on through the underground if this stuff takes off.

And Ben Wagoner said that they can now get 1080p content down to 8mb/s that looks incredible and nearly the same as much higher bitrates. If we can get some geeks on this shit, it could be good news for everyone with an HD DVD player.

3xDVDs.

These would also play in BD players wouldn't they?

just like the Dreamcast!

They did this with the dreamcast? Can you still get the software? I might have to get the stuff for the 360 HD-DVD drive. Not into making my own movies but could be worth it to play around with.

Well the royalty rates went down to nothing with the DC and GD-ROM. If the same thing happened with Toshida and HD DVD's small/indie devs. might give HD DVD some timelimited exclusives.

3xDVDs will not play in BD players, but I think there might be a similar process to burn BR-formatted DVD-Rs so they're playable (but not in HD DVD players). An AVC-HD DVD, essentially.

Edit: just remembered that, while you can do this on Blu-Ray, you CANNOT have menus. BDMV is the BD format that allows menus and other "advanced features", and as of last year, it REQUIRES AACS. PS3s and some early Blu-Ray players with old firmware were able to do this, but if you have firmware updated in the past 10-12 months (or a newer player), it's no go. You have to use BDAV, which does not require AACS, but also does not support menus.

But can you get the software for the DC still like you can with this for the 360 HD-DVD?

There was lots of porn released on HD-DVD

http://www.springtowndvd.com/search_result.asp?mode=cat&divid=e&orderby=N&catid=HDDVD

I only watched a few of the really low budget ones but it ranged from "not that big of an upgrade from DVD" to "oh god they didn't use a filter look at that scar/horrible tit job/bruise/razor burn/cellulite/stretch marks/etc"

Best Buy has it for 21 bucks. Really good movie and something I definately think I would watch again sometime in the future. Paramount continues to make great discs.

wow i knew the porn industry was going hd when it and bluray came out but i didnt know they made any. I will have to check them out.

At the BB here there is no Into the Wild available. They put out a sign saying it was canceled by the manufacturer, which we all know is not true.
 I think I'll pass on the HD versions then.
Well, like I said, I only saw a few of the really low budget ones that I found on the cheap (the comment you bolded came from my experience with Girlvana 3).

I haven't watched any of the Digital Playground ones but I have downloaded HD trailers off of their site and it looked pretty good.
