The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

I had a bad copy of end of days. I ended up sending it back to deepdiscount.com. the disc had a scratch on it and all have worked other then it so i never even tried to delete off of the HDD on my 360.
Well, it took the entire format's lifespan and beyond, but I finally got a bad combo disc that won't play. No American Gangster for me until Amazon sends a new one.

Never mind, I guess I've still avoided them. I had to delete everything on my (360's) HD DVD hard drive, but at least now it works.
Same thing happened to me and it worked when I did that too. Weird. Although I did have issues with Children of Men when it came out.
yeah..i know...I want to bite on that SOOOO bad but I think I'm gonna wait just a bit longer till it gets under $40
\

I don't think it's gonna get much lower than that

Hell I ordered The Ultimate Matrix Collection and it has still yet to ship. I ordered it about a week ago now. The order was from amazon so I guess they have to get a restock on it.

I'm thinking is you can REALLY wait it out that the standard 3 movie HD Matrix might just might hit 29.99 new. I'm nearly postive they'd throw them in the garbage before going any lower than that. I'm not interested in the Ultimate but it's probably about as low as it will get. I just don't want all those double sided discs for a collection.

I like my combos and all but I almost always prefer artwork on top and I store all discs in numerous 336 capacity cases and double sided just doesn't really work.

Anybody ever find a solution for the Blade Runner Hollywood Video repalcement cases? If so I must have missed it, want to clue me in?

Nothing has been found as of yet.

I hate the comob discs. I have some and regret geting them. If I would have known they were combo I would have bought it on bluray or normal dvd. I would really like to get children of men but it being a combo is keeping me from geting it. I would rather pay a little more and them have put it on 2 discs. One the HD and the other the normal version. This is also why I hate the copy of IT i have. First half of the move on one side the other half is on the other. Come to think of it i have some other dvds that are widescreen on one side and full on the other. I hate double sided discs and if I can a void them I plan on it. So I guess no children of men for me.
Grabbed Justice League and Appleseed from amazon.
Oh shit...they dropped the prices...I'll save $6 if I cancel my pre-orders at WB...now to figure out how to cancel.

Knowing how WB operates, you'll save all your money and still get the videos if you cancel your order there.

Are they still that inept?

im not understanding your beef with the combo disks..i have children of men and it works fine

Why, dude? Do you care if the DVD side gets scratched or something?

The simple fact is that combos are more difficult for players to read.

Also, the lack of disc art makes it look like bargain bin mode.

What Megalith said is why I don't like them. Also due to the fact that one side can get scratched. To me it just makes the disc seem cheap.

i think i've had a problem with every combo disk i've tried

most of the time i just need to turn it off then on and it'll fix, but a couple times i had to watch the rest of the movie on the SD side
How?
They're not, he's just talking out of his ass.

Some players have problems with combos (and there were some bad combos earlier on) but I haven't had a problem with any of the combo disc I own/rented.

I don't mind them, it was actually nice to have the DVD side when my HD-DVD player broke awhile ago.

I see more places just selling till they run out and at the lowest dropping them to 9.99 or sending them back because of a recall. I really don't see any firesales unless you count them dropping to 9.99 a firesale. Now them going to 9.99 and a buy 1 get one free or even a buy 2 or 3 get 1 or 2 free that would be a fire sale.

Like I said before I don't keep them in their hard cases and instead 3 different 336 Case Logic cases. So now my HD section is a whole bunch of silver discs and when looking through or having someone browse them it just look like crap.

Same goes for the double sided standard dvds. I don't want the FS version thank you very much just put out seperate issues. I think they thought they'd sell better if they included both versions of the movies where as I don't hold onto many of them unless they're great just because of the double side.

HD is different since it's not just some FS I'll never look at but I still would rather just have the HD. I usually don't watch these movies in the car player or anything so the only real benefit is if I'm taking them to a friends or something where they don't have HD.

I'd rather open my collection and see what movie it is instead of silver and having to read around the center. I keep them very organized so I'm not saying I can't pick them out whenever I want just I guess being picky somewhat. Never had the trouble some have had with the combos but that could be another reason for some.

I still REALLY!! hate the first 2 seasons of Las Vegas for putting them out as 3 double sided disc sets!!!! They learned their lesson and the 3rd and 4th seasons are on 5 and 4 discs respectively.
The simple fact is that combos are more difficult for players to read.
I'll never understand why some people seem to have such bad luck with them. I have over 40 of them, and have never once had a problem on my A1, A35, 360 addon, or laptop. Nor on either my parents' or Father-in-Law's A2s. Guess I must be Irish and my parents never told me.....
What do you guys think about buying the 360 HD-DVD addon for 50$? I have a PS3 for Blu-Ray but there are a lot of cheap HD-DVD's I want to get also. Any idea on when/if all the HD-DVD exclusives will make it over to Blu-Ray? I'd hate to spend the money on the HD-DVD drive and movies only to see them all come out on Blu-Ray in a few months. Also I'm not terribly thrilled with having to rely on my 360 as my one and only option to ever be able to watch any HD-DVD's I get.

What do you guys think? Is it worth it to grab one now that they are cheap?
I dont know if anyone has answered this yet... But I think it is worth it... it comes with a remote that if you buy seperate would be 20-30 bucks on its own... and you can use the remote later if you download movies to your xbox 360... the other added benefit of the xbox player is you can transmit HD through colorstream and not have to have HDMI connection on your tv... for people who have older HDTV's

So I know several people had this pre-ordered... Did you all ever hear anything back from Amazon to say yeh or neh? Or better yet receive anything? Don't worry we have a witness protection program set up and waiting for you :)

Children of Men - stopped somewhere towards the end for me, could never get HD DVD side to play again
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - kept freezing at the court room scene, had to watch rest in SD
License to Wed - movie was fine, but the extras involving the kid gave me a lot of trouble

Those were some HD DVD combo disks I had problems with

i always had the latest firmware at the time of playing

Haven't the time right now to peruse Hi-Def Digest, so can anyone inform me if there's a difference between the Pan's release on Blu-Ray and HD? Thanks.

no difference except hd version has web connectivity

According to their site:

'Pan's Labyrinth' arrives on HD DVD with a 1080p/VC-1 transfer (identical to the Blu-ray)

(Note the HD DVD and Blu-ray editions contain the same DTS HD MA audio track.)

Nothing else is mentioned to compare them so I think its the same.

There' is a difference between US and UK versions of Pans though.

US version has lots of noise reduction and softens up the detail, but has superior soundtrack (DTS-HD MA 7.1)

UK version has greater detail with no video processing, but wimpy audio (DD5.1)

So, after googling for quite some time, apparently there's a Spain version of Saw I & Saw II. Anyone know where I can find info on this?

I know Knowelt released Saw I in Germany already, and was planning on the rest, but I've already read that T2 & Premonition are the last releases by the company, so I'd like to at least get the first 3 movies, and not have a hole in the set. (I ordered Saw III Dutch on HD Movie Source when it was posted for $19.95 + $2.99 ship. :))

RIP HD DVD, hopefully the next format war wont be decided by a popularity contest.

Still gathering lots of movies, just this month iv picked up about 6 for myself and 4 for my sister, as well as 2 copies of planet earth from discovery store.

I do miss Sega systems...

Has anyone experienced playback issues with American Gangster on an A30? Froze a few a few times even after the hot water treatment... also shot out an error code if you left it paused too long.

Thanks in advance

I don't know what kind of player he has, but I just sent an American Gangster HD DVD to another CAGer and he is having playback problems with it, and the same disc worked perfectly fine in my 360 HD DVD player. Go figure.

i had problems with american gangster with the first used hd-dvd drive i picked up from gamestop. i returned that and used the money to get a new one and havent had any problems with it. i think there was a problem with cookies. it worked with my old drive after i disabled web features though.

I got quite the surprise in the mail today. FYE for some reason shipped me the five-disc Blade Runner. I ordered it way back in December but canceled the order shortly thereafter when I found it cheaper elsewhere. Now well over three months later I get it in the mail. I checked my account and it still shows the order as being canceled. I checked my credit cards and I wasn't charged for it on any of them.

Thanks for the nice gift FYE!

Same thing happened to me except I got that, oceans trilogy, and the shining all in hd even after I canceled.
