HD DVD thread - Toshiba: HD DVD DISCONTINUED, REPAIR/SUPPORT CONTINUES, NO BLU PLANS

All the BB thing shows me is Sony is worried after Toshiba's rebate and the Matrix Trilogy appearing on it as a timed exclusive. They want to try to bury it NOW. I hope they fail and HD DVD players sell great this holiday, ensuring a win for HD DVD or a dual format player future.
Man, if only the head of Universal would come out and say that Blu-Ray is dead.

That would show em
What alot of forecasters dont realize is the PS3 could be a repeat of the PSP... new arbitrary format from Sony which the software SELLS DECENTLY for a while as there is nothing to play gamewise.... as games are released intrest in the format dies down because people generally buy PSP's and PS3's for games first (although I am an exception to the PS3 rule and I know of other too)

I dont think either format is going to gain the toehold like dvds (I kind of like that reminds me of dvds first months) ... they were released so far after VHS's inception that it made sense to upgrade, the quality was leaps and bounds over vhs... with HD and BR you really need a huge tv to really enjoy them as the difference in my 30" wasnt all that great, on my 61"... whoa baby!
i was just prompted to update when starting up an hd movie...
Here's the update info:
It is a very minor update in relation to the May 07 update. It includes a small number of fixes in the player networking functionality, to address interoperability issues with the first HD DVD titles supporting networking features, which are shipping in the coming weeks. All other functionality is unchanged.

In other words, we found some bugs we want to fix in advance you all seeing them. Wouldn't it be nice if all bug fixes came that way?

Also some good HD DVD news from our neighboors in Canada:

Well, we may be a tenth of the population of the US, but there's some good news for HD DVD in Canada today.

First, Blockbuster Canada is not following BB USA's lead with going all BD in the next HD expansion. In fact BB Canada just added another 50 stores that will carry both formats. Of course I suppose they could follow suit later on depending on the demand.

Blockbusters in Canada that rent HD movies: http://www.blockbuster.ca/hd-blu-ray-stores.html

And while they're not huge, Zip.ca is seeing more HD DVDs go out for rent than BDs to the tune of 56:44 last month.(http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/f...3-0f6630772db9)

BTW, here is Universal's & HD DVD's response:
HD DVD shrugs off Blockbuster move
Author: Tim Smalley
Published: 21st Jun 2007

The HD DVD Promotional Group isn't fazed by Blockbuster's move to expand its Blu-ray rentals to another 1450 stores, while not expanding HD DVD.
During a briefing with UK press in London yesterday, Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of High Definition Strategic Marketing for Universal Studios and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group, shrugged off Blockbuster’s move to expand Blu-ray to 1450 new stores in America.

Graffeo pointed out that rental counted for less than one percent of its revenue and brushed it off as an insignificant event in the format war.

Ken cited the fact that HD DVD is still being offered in the original 250 stores and through Blockbuster’s online rental service. He claims that those 250 stores are stores where there are large numbers of early adopters and the latter, he believes, is Blockbuster’s major growth market.

Thus, he is not fazed by Blockbuster’s decision. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that this is potentially a bigger win for Blu-ray than it is a loss for HD DVD, based on the figures he’s given to us.

He remained adamant that HD DVD was on top at the moment and claimed that dedicated HD DVD set top boxes are outselling Blu-ray set top boxes at a rate of three to one in the US. In the last six weeks, the Promotional Group has sold over 50,000 HD DVD set top boxes on promotion in the US, proving that once the price is right, consumers will buy into the technology.
WTF is up with Paramount...Disturbia, Shooter...still listed at $29.99 everywhere. I caved in though and preordered Disturbia from Buy.com with GGC for 23.XX after tax/shipping.

Amazon dropped them to 27.95 which seems to be the par for new Paramount movies.

Personally I'm frustrated at them consistently trying to sidestep adding Lossless audio on anything. Even though I think Universal is mainly avoiding doing it for double dipping at LEAST they have included Dolby TrueHD tracks on SOME releases which is more then I can say for Paramount except for as of late perhaps. Is DTS HD lossless? If so then kudos for Paramount finally stepping up to delivering it.
Too bad it was too late for "Dreamgirls". As it stands I'm not touching that with Lossless. I might even be looser when it comes to an action flick but this is a film that depends directly on sound being it's a Musical and I find it INSULTING they could even think they could pass halfassing the audio here.

Found out that apparently there are 2 stores in Tampa that carry HD-DVDs for rent right now. Wish i would've known that, i would've tried to help in the war with my additional 9 instore rentals a week.

Not that the rental schematics of a dying company mean shit to the war. If anything, HD-DVD could just spin it around by saying "Blockbuster gets Blu-ray since no one actually wants to buy them, unlike HD-DVDS"

I've been kicking around the idea of Darkman and Disturbia but I haven't seen Darkman in 13 years and Disturbia is too rich for my blood at $27.95

Oh, I forgot to mention I also already paid for The Big Lebowski. Now that one's going to hurt. I need to see that movie in HD like a crackhead needs a hit.
dunno where to order lebowski from... i know in store it will prob be 25
You could always do the buy.com 10 off GGC route.

It would be about 13 shipped.

I've used one card about 6 times.
Is DTS HD lossless? If so then kudos for Paramount finally stepping up to delivering it.
Nope, DTS-HD is a lossy codec similar to DD+, with the exception that it contains a "core" DTS stream that can be extracted and sent out via optical/coaxial without re-encoding.

DTS-HD Master Audio is DTS' lossless codec, analagous to Dolby TrueHD.
I've used one card about 6 times.
I just tried making a GCO from Buy.com's site using the same CC from a previous purchase. I kept getting a "Please enter a valid card" error.

Planet Earth HD DVD= Best moneymaking hidef disc on EITHER format!
The high-definition DVD version of the Discovery Channel and BBC’s Planet Earth has sold about 45,000 copies. That’s “one for every five owners of a high-def disc machine, a ratio only a handful of DVDs have ever come close to,” USA TODAY reports.

Those sales translate to $3.2 million, “the biggest moneymaker yet to hit Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.” The set actually has “a list price of nearly $100 costs more than the average DVD player,” although it retails for around $65—still more than many DVD players.

The four-disc high-definition set has been available in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray; both have the British narration by David Attenborough, and are not the Sigourney Weaver-narrated US version. There’s also a standard DVD version. Today, the Discovery Channel starts selling HD versions of the US version.

Warner Home Video’s Ron Sanders tells the paper, “This series was made for high definition. Its success points to consumers wanting to see and hear high-definition content, and there isn’t a huge amount of content available from broadcast or cable or satellite.”

The BBC’s Burton Cromer tells the paper, “In a month and a half, we’ve sold more copies of Planet Earth across all three formats than we’ve sold of The Office or Fawlty Towers. And we don’t see any letup; in fact, we’re selling more units a day than when we first streeted.”

He attributes that success in part to Oprah, who talked about the series during two episodes of her show. “If you don’t think I have a shrine to Oprah set up in my office, you’re wrong,” he said.
‘Planet Earth’ looks great in HD — and to the BBC
Go HD DVD! :)

Go HD DVD! :)
How come stories like this aren't picked up mainstream, but shit like Blockbuster going BR does? I can't remember how many times I've heard countless podcasts say, Blu-Ray is taking hold of the market and will likely win soon.
DVDTalk'er Jackal04 reports that Best Buy will have a special box set for 300 DVD like they did for V for Vendetta

I'd like to see them make good by their HD customers and offer them a DVD of the supplemental features for the cost of shipping. It's a great set, except for the asinine fact that they left the special features off.

Awesome deal at Barnes & Noble.

I just got Black Snake Moan, Meet Joe Black and Being John Malkovich for $50 shipped (2-3 day) on the dot after borrowing my friend's membership number.

I hope you didn't put his membership number into your online account. Cuz then he can't use it online. Once its entered into an online account it can only be used for that one account.

He doesn't order online and even if he did, I would gladly let him use my B&N account after he did me this favor.

well assuming that it is exclusive then thats a big one...

o and fuck blockbuster... i kept 2 br movies of theirs lol..... i guess they got lost in the mail and i reported them as not received.. and they just showed up on one day

Being a Paramount Pictures release, I would be EXTREMELY surprised if it's exclusive. Paramount is completely and totally neutral.
fuck my local BB for them not carrying Mallrats.
the PQ is kinda blah

somewhere inbetween clerks 2 and jay/silent bob (on blu ray)

i know the movie is old and shot on a low budget, but i expected more PQ wise

Definately not exclusive, just check the link from Linkin's post awhile ago if you need confirmation (or google it). Also, there's listings up already for the BD version (this is why I say you can't always believe everything you read on AVS).

Just order The Pianist and The Prestige for £32.13 ($64.16) from Amazon.co.uk

Not bad.

On a weird note, Barnes & Noble changed my $50 dollar hold into a 22.xx dollar charge. They better still be mailing out the rest of my order or they can just stick the one they mailed me up their ass.
