HD DVD thread - Toshiba: HD DVD DISCONTINUED, REPAIR/SUPPORT CONTINUES, NO BLU PLANS
Being a Paramount Pictures release, I would be EXTREMELY surprised if it's exclusive. Paramount is completely and totally neutral.
While they are neutral, the HD DVD releases do tend to get higher resolution audio and atleast in the case of MI:III, an exclusive video commentary.

ironically i was once again looking at ordering prestige from amazon.uk..

i was let down that gift certificates dont work at amazon uk though.. held off again

If you order from amazon.uk, you are best off getting more then one item.
yea true but $30 + for a movie is ridiculous...
Just look at it this way, it's either paying 400+ for a Blu-Ray player or pay a little extra to get it on HD-DVD (or even worst not getting it at all in HD if it comes from an HD studio)

And that's why I said get more then one if you decide to import. My order came out to 32.08 per movie where if I would have ordered from an importer it would have been 35.45 per movie without shipping.

Toshiba sticks with the $299 Price Point for the HD-A2
Toshiba is sticking with the $299 price-point for its bottom-line HD DVD player after seeing a sales jolt when it introduced the lower price in May as part of a limited-time offer. The company said during a press event in New York Thursday that promotional prices introduced in May on its two lower-priced players would go into permanent effect July 1.

The entry-level HD-A2 player will stay at $299 and the HD-A20 at $399. The top-line HD-XA2 remains $799.

The company sold 100,000 set-top players in its first year on the market but has sold an additional 50,000 players since it began lowering prices in April.

See, HD DVD has good news too, they just don't shove it down everyone's faces like fucking Sony
rsigley mentioned that the mallrats PQ wasn't that great on the previous page.
Mallrats looks the best it has ever looked. It's a low budget movie, so its not going to look like King Kong, ever. If you are a fan of the movie, get the HD DVD!
did anyone end up getting Le Pacte Des Loups?
 I did.

I noticed in the links that Ruined posted for Underworld and Silent Hill that The Island is coming out end of July on HD DVD. Has it been announced in the US, and I missed it?
 I did.

I believe all 3 are releasing in different countries.

The Island HD-DVD (UK/Europe)
Underworld HD-DVD (Germany)
Silent Hill (Germany)

How is the PQ on Le Pacte Des Loups?

just finished seeing black snake moan.... rather interesting movie..

i didnt think ricci would do such a role..

and throughout the movie i kept saying her bf looked just like jt... turns out it was him lol

I'm glad and seems to be on track for the long speculated $199 price point by around the start of '08. A smart move too, I don't think they could expect it to sell effectively if they didn't drop the price as many folk would just wait and wait around to jump in thinking it would get cheaper again.

Edit: In other random news, I just saw Last Starfighter was announced, may actually pick that one up in all its 80's goodness.

Wasn't she in Casper? I kept thinking she was gonna get raped by a ghost at some point...

go ahead and see it.... the whole jt thing is only a small part of the story...

Well you find that out in the first 5 minutes... anyways i didn't think it was a very good flic. Well made, but boring.

Argh today sucks and rocks at the same time.

My order from Amazon.co.uk (The Pianist & The Prestige) showed up today, only 5 days after being mailed out.

The rest of my order from B&N (Black Snake Moan & Being John Malkovich) showed up.

My movies from blockbuster.com (Hustle And Flow & Flags Of Our Fathers) showed up today.

And I STILL HAVE NOTHING TO WATCH THE DAMN THINGS ON!!!   Pretty boxes though.

my blood diamond came in.....

the online experience is definitely not mind blowing... just acess to more information (mostly text) and you can take some wb polls..

its also kinda slow.. make sure you have your cookie settings to accept all or your going to be prompted every few secs

So we're having guests over today for the 4th and I wanted to fire up the HD player to try and lure in some new consumers. Which discs do you guys suggest as the best demos for the format? I'll probably pop in King Kong, but I also wanted something that could play in the background and just let the picture catch their attention without being immersed into a storyline. Which Planet Earth episode would be good for that? Thanks.

I would vote on the first PE episode. Or any of the discovery atlas series.

I just came into some money, what should I grab

300
The Adventures Of Robin Hood
Blue Planet
The Departed
The Fountain
The Fugitive
Galapagos
Goodfellas

or

Band Of Brothers Vol. 1-5 imported from Japan

I'm leaning towards the 8 from Warner but since Band Of Brothers hasn't had a date announced, will jump up 997 yens in price after release and is rumored to be using TrueHD discs, I'm tempted.

Well, I'm out of the game for at least two weeks. Goddamn fucking rush-it-out-the-door hardware. fuck Microsoft.

Glad I just got 2 more movies with nothing to watch them on. Ugh.

Join the club except it was my hd-dvd attachment that ate shit.

I currently have 6 new movies (Being John Malkovich, Big Lebowski, Black Snake Moan, Meet Joe Black, Pianist, Prestige) and 2 from Blockbuster Online (Hustle And Flow, Flags Of Our Fathers) and I'm looking at another 2-3 weeks before I can watch them.

im waiting for your impressions on prestige..

if you dont like it you can always sell it to me lol

watching the fountain right now.

i cant believe the attachment crapped out.. mine has been solid so far.. when i had to send my old 360 in for repairs twice, i luckily connected the attachment to my pc... see having it not integrated is a plus sometimes.. ive always though the add on is a great value for the money because it can be used on pc as well..

since i got the elite i had had no problems at all

I'll take photos of the box once I get some batteries for my camera.

I was surprised as hell when it decided to act up. I've never heard of it scuffing disc before and neither has support.
Is Being John Malkovich a decent movie? A friend says it was great and I generally trust him, but I'm a little wary.
It's really weird, once you can jump that hurdle, it's good/decent. It reminds me of a less likeable Eternal Sunshine.

Hm, I guess I missed 300 becoming available for pre-order @amazon? I love how their "alert me when this title is available feature" works 2% of the time.

Anyway, I ordered at about $25 and change shipped after the 10% discount deal.

My 360 is on the fritz also (see COFFIN thread). It still works sort of, but I'm getting it replaced, as the 3 RED RINGS keep coming back.

I was able to watch DAYLIGHT on HD-DVD, then it died the next day. I have THE WATCHER in route from Blockbuster.com, so hopefully I can TRY to watch it before my 360 dies completely (or before I get my coffin).

I'm beginning to get more annoyed with the 360 lately...at least I have my PS3 to fall back on, just wish my BlockBuster store carried Blu-Ray.

You should cancel and grab it from Warner.

They have either a buy 2 get 15% off and free shipping or 20% (WBWEL) and free shipping after you buy 60 dollars worth of goods. Going the 20% route, it's only $23.96

Most people have reported that they recieve preorders 3-7 days in advance.
Also Mr. and Mrs. Smith on HD DVD

Not sure where to import polish HD DVD's though...
A guy at AVS got his from e-dvd.pl but it ended up cost him something obscene like 48 after shipping (-edit Although that was for 2 day shipping from Poland)

18 day turn around isn't so bad.

Thanks. Yeah, I did think about that, but there's not a lot I want to get that's Warner that I don't already have. Meh, it's only a couple bucks difference, plus I can't remember if they ship to Hawaii for free. That's usually the killing point of deals for me.
Yes.

There is no region lock on HD-DVD.

As for whether or not they are going to come out in America, it depends on the movie.

Out of the imports I own, it's possible for Mulholland Drive and The Pianist to come out here since Universal owns the American rights to both.

It's not possible for The Prestige, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Total Recall to be released in America on HD-DVD due to the rights being owned by Blu-Ray exclusive studios.

Go with the 8 from Warner. BoB will come out in the US and will be cheaper than importing when it does.

Except me. I usually get it the friday after release, but it's still no big deal to save a few bucks.

Maybe i missed it somewhere, but aren't the UK HD-DVDs still in PAL which would make them unplayable in the US?

Amir from MS dishes some slight info on LOTR for HD DVD.

Care is needed to get the absolute best quality. Fortunately, while I can’t say much about LOTR in public, I can tell you that a ton of care is being applied to its encoding. And the results are very nice from what I hear.

From the sounds of it, MS is working with New Line to get this release on HD DVD to be the perfect HD DVD.

The main question for me is when. If it's the middle of next year on a TrueHD disc, then I'm not very interested in the American release.

Here's the pros and cons I came up with for each one

Warner 8 Pros:
Alot of good movies
Quality is sure to be top-notch

Warner 8 Cons:
Will probably still be available in a few months

BoB Pros:
One of the best mini-series ever, months in advance
Since the pre-order price is cheaper than the Japanese retail, if it's bad then I could probably flip it with minimal loss

BoB Cons:
English menu still unconfirmed
Video quality unknown besides the fact it's encoded AVC
Japanese packaging
Maybe i missed it somewhere, but aren't the UK HD-DVDs still in PAL which would make them unplayable in the US?
No.

Gah, I already double dipped on LOTR. I really don't wanna go through that again.

Well, with the PS3 price drop news, it looks like I won't really care so much about BR exclusives any more...just a matter of time for me...
