I don't mind the combo's either, but I really wish the multi format ones would come in at the same price as the blu ray discs. It should be cheaper to make a dual format then a blu ray disc.

It is cheaper.

But for some reason the studios look at it like giving you added value they think they can charge for. It should change though.

Superman: Doomsday and Justice League: The New Frontier (Toons) 2/26/2008:
Just a little over a month ago, Warner Home Video released Superman: Doomsday DVD, an animated feature based on the comic book stories of Superman fighting the battle of his life...literally! Early in 2008, Warner will continue along these lines with a similar release of Justice League: The New Frontier.

The Justice League release is going to arrive on February 26th, available not only on DVD, but also on the competing hi-def disc formats HD DVD and Blu-ray disc. The news attached to that, though, is simply that the same day will see brand-new hi-def Blu-ray and HD DVD releases of Superman: Doomsday as well! Yes, our retail informants tell us that the studio has decided to add in an additional pair of releases, one for each of the hi-def formats. They tell us that these will each be single-disc releases, probably with idential content (but simply in hi-def, up to 1080P is expected!), and that pricing has not been set on them just yet.

Warner hasn't officially announced these so far, but is expected to withing the next couple of weeks. We should have cover art around the same time, so stay tuned and we'll follow up as we get that.

I'll definately pick both these puppies up on launch day.

Cool, glad I didn't spring for the DVDs.

And yeah, not sure how much K-Mart means in the grand scheme of things--Sears still carries both format players, right?

From every thing I've read, that means your package is already on the way.

I canceled a massive order from them a few days ago but now that they finally got their shit together, I think I'm going to place an even bigger order before the 25% off coupon expires.

Yea I did the same thing. I cancelled two of my orders today because I just couldn't justify giving them my money right now when someone can order several movies from them now and they get them in a few days but I order a couple kubrick films back in august and still haven't seen shit from them. I've got half a mind to reorder now and see what happens but at the same time wait till a later date. what do you think sporadic?

It's up to you. From what I've heard they've been doing a last in, first out sort of thing. So if you reorder, theoretically, they should get on the ball about mailing you your movies.

If they are actually shipping now, you can't really go wrong at those prices. Just make sure that they don't charge you/ship your cancelled order anyways. I've had them do that to me with a piece of one of my orders and hopefully they won't do it with the one I canceled last week.

Shit, I was thinking of picking this up a couple of months back at Costco for $350-$100 MIR. Glad I held out! Costco was having trouble shifting them at this price.

Anybody know how this one stacks up compared to the 360 HD-DVD drive? Or its nearest competitors?
Are you sure that Walmart price isn't for Black Friday?
That's what I'm thinking. I saw the thing about the Acer laptop on CNN.

This is the BF ad, I do believe.

This is the "low end" HD DVD player, but it's still going to be a better piece of hardware than the 360 add-on. The one caveat is the 360 can give you 1080p if you're using VGA or HDMI, but if you don't have a 1080p TV it's irrelevant. That said, you can't get TrueHD audio from the 360 add-on (which also only matters if you have a receiver capable of it), so the features are somewhat of a wash. I would DEFINITELY recommend upgrading here, though. I'm strongly considering it.

Here's a Cnet review.

Oh those mother fuckers, I fucking knew this was going to happen. I put off buying the damn disc and planned on just renting it but then absolutely NO ONE was renting it (red box, BB, Hollywood) so I cracked and bought it. Now I see that was a drastic mistake. There's no way I'm re-buying it, no way at all, nope not gonna do it... fuck

HD DVD has been having an AMAZING few weeks.

Wal-Mart decides to carry the A2 in GIGANTIC quantity's
Best Buy sells the 360 AO for and gives away Heroes + 2 other movies for free (Plus Kong in the box + 5 by mail)
All around the board drop for the A2 to sub $200 (CC, Best Buy, Amazon)
Circuit City to have A3 for $169 on Black Friday
K-Mart goes HD DVD exclusive
Wal-Mart sells A2 for $98 on Friday - 60k+ new HD DVD owners in one day
$15 HD DVD movies at Wal-Mart (Some of them being Warner...)

I like how "K-Mart goes HD DVD exclusive" is a win...

Come on, let's be honest here, the entire chain has probably sold 5 high def discs in total to this point.

You know, I gotta be honest with you, now that I own both formats like you do I really can't understand why you seem to favor one over the other so much?

Me, personally, I could give 2 shits who wins the war at this point cause I've got both covered. Ah well, keep on sellin' it I guess.

You could have rented it on your XBOX360 its on the Video Marketplace and in HD

As far as standalones go, any reason besides 300 and Bourne Identity to go with the A3 instead of the A2?

Someone should probably check each week at Wal-Mart's sale items. There was an article on CNNMoney today that stated basically Wal-Mart is going to have massive sales on 5 "high-demand" items each Friday until Christmas instead of all in one day so:

1. Other stores don't steal their ideas after the ads are leaked.
2. They don't have to worry about ads leaking early if they are changing the deals for every Friday.
3. They think they'll get more money and customers this way than having 1 giant sale.

Damn. I think im going to pick up the A2 Player even though I have the 360 one. I'd rather have a stand alone unit then using the 360 one.

The 360 player is flawed anyways. Unless i'm remembering wrong, USB 2.0 maxes at 12Mb/s, while video/audio on some discs can exceed 20Mb/s.

I'm gonna go for a A2 tomorrow. It'll probably end up being like Black Friday, but maybe this wont be too well advertised in Tampa.
Wow, November 1st hits and ads like that roll out with all the Christmas sparkle to it.
You roll your eyes like you're surprised by that. Hell, I first heard in-store Christmas muzak 2-3 weeks ago. It's like this every year.

Now, we all know where I stand on things...but is paying $6 (or whatever it costs) to watch a single movie one time a worthwhile substitute for getting a physical DVD, with all usage rights built-in, for maybe twice that amount? HD is nice, but that digital rental noise is an awful substitute for actually owning something, no?

I live in a small town. I think it will be me fighting stay at home moms. I am really drugged up right now (I just had surgery this tuesday and I am in pain). I think I can take them though!!!!

The A2 only 1080i, so technically the 360 can give you 1080p.

The A2 CAN give you the better audio, but you have to have a receiver capable of TrueHD or DD+ (which I do not, so I do not care at this point).

Still a GREAT deal.

sucks they dont give you a list of the stores that are going to stock the hd dvd player for 99.99. I don't want to be waking up early to go to a wal-mart only to find out that there is no HD DVD player on sale at my Walmart. I already have a HD-A2, but figure I can get one more for my downstairs TV.

Basically if they don't have them in stock right now, then they very likely won't tomorrow. I really don't think any walmarts are getting any new shipments of any of these sale items, they just go on sale for cheap tomorrow.

Watched Return to House on Haunted Hill last night for a halloween party movie.

For a party movie, it is pretty fun, because you have the choices you can make. We let each couple take turns on each choice. The movie itself is just direct to video horror, love it or hate it.

I am very confused about one thing though, I kept seeing little bright spots in the picture, almost like dust on film. But the review on Highdefdigest says it's nearly flawless.... weird.
$99 also at Best Buy NOW - I haven't been able to find a store with one though:

Link
Oh fuck!!!! Damn none near me either.

Edit: Scored one at Best Buy in Irvine, CA!

I plan on maybe checkin my close by BB to see if they do have them. JUst because the store inventory says not availble may not be the truth. I know for the CC i work at when we get shit in thats in limited supply like the wiis we move them all to display so people can't purchase off the internet and thats what I've seen done with a couple of BB.

Yeah. There's one right by my house so it can't hurt to check. I'm not expecting much though.

The good thing is, this may be an indicator of upcoming Amazon/Circuit City/etc price drops, so even if it doesn't work out for people tomorrow I would guess we'll see at least a few more chances at this before Christmas.
