lil disappointed on the lack of special features on blue planet
I thought it was pretty cool how they included the whole "The Dream Is Alive" movie.

They packed alot on to that 15GB disc.
that helmet looks bad ass... what do you have to buy to get it?
$35 edition at BB.
crap.. and i bet they dont give it away with a hd dvd purchase in store
Nope...that's why I have to buy both. I want that helmet. At Comic-Con in San Diego they were selling this one:
crap.. and i bet they dont give it away with a hd dvd purchase in store
Its packaged with the DVD...so not gonna happen.

I'm torn if I should buy THAT and the HD DVD version...but I'll pass most likley on the SD version.

Tomorrow is gonna suck.

Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
300

Ugh.
hows that shaun of the dead... ive heard many ppl talk about it but i dont think ive seen it..
Hilarious movie made specifically for zombie fanatics (be sure to watch the original Of The Dead series first) but the way they filmed it doesn't really benefit from HD.
hows that shaun of the dead... ive heard many ppl talk about it but i dont think ive seen it..

shooter is coming out too
As a fan of the 'Dead' movies I enjoyed it. Sold my SD months ago in anticipation.

As for Shooter, I have no idea what its about, but my Blockbuster was selling both versions of it last week.

Shooter was bad ass. Here's the concept:

The best Sniper the US ever had retired but the government seeks him out for advise to find a sniper that's trying to kill the president...but it turns out to be a scam and he's actually framed for the shooting. Seem's cliche but its a really fun movie.

yea i liked that

i just always feel cheated with the imax movies cause they're usually very good but short

guess i'm spoiled by most movies having like 10 hours of just extras now

i know this is HD DVD thread, but the Mars Blu Ray disk is really bad.

most of the movie just looks like its in SD, then random shots are very high quality hd

Some of the many highlights of the set include no less than five different versions of the film, all freshly remastered: Ridley Scott's brand-new 'Final Cut,' featuring all-new footage and upgraded special effects; the 1992 "Director's Cut"; both the 1982 domestic Theatrical and unrated International cuts; and the long-sought after, near-mythical "Workprint" version never before released publicly.

For the set's supplements, Warner has assembled Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos, Joanna Cassidy, Sean Young and Daryl Hannah among some 80 stars, filmmakers and others who participate in "Dangerous Days," a three-and-a-half-hour documentary by award-winning DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika.

Additionally, there will be an entire disc with hours of enhanced content containing featurettes and galleries devoted to over 45 minutes of deleted and alternate scenes recently discovered in deep storage and approved by Scott, visual effects as well as background on author Philip K. Dick, script development, abandoned sequences, conceptual design and the overall impact of the film.

Seems like overkill to me

the Comic-Con exclusive of the 300 2-disc SD release is awesome. I'd rather have that than the Spartan helmet.

I was interested in Shooter when I saw the trailer in theaters, but never caught it during it's run. Might have to give it a rent.

I just picked up 300 and Hot Fuzz (both HD-DVD) today. Probably will watch them later on tonight.
Is the first set all consisting of single-sided discs like the Complete Matrix Trilogy, or are they double-sided like the Ultimate Matrix set? Not sure if those were mentioned in the press releases.
From what I read, they are all single sided. The only difference between the two are purely cosmetic.
From what I read, they are all single sided. The only difference between the two are purely cosmetic.
Actually it seems like the Complete one is 4 disc while the Ultimate is 5

Blade Runner: The Final Cut will be included in three stunning DVD editions: a Two-Disc Special Edition (at $20.97 SRP), a Four-disc Collector’s Edition ($34.99 SRP) and the Five-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition ($78.92 SRP) in Collectible “Deckard Briefcase” packaging.

Simultaneous HD DVD and Blu-Ray versions (each $TBD) of the “Deckard Briefcase” will also be released in numbered, limited quantities. HD DVD and Blu-Ray 5-Disc Digi Packs with collectible slipcase (each $TBD) will include all of the UCE content.

That UCE content includes…

Disc One
RIDLEY SCOTT'S ALL-NEW "FINAL CUT" VERSION OF THE FILM
Restored and remastered with added & extended scenes, added lines, new and cleaner special effects and all new 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. Also includes:
Commentary by Ridley Scott
Commentary by Executive Producer/ Co-Screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Co-Screenwriter David Peoples; Producer Michael Deely and production executive Katherine Haber
Commentaries by visual futurist Syd Mead; production designer Lawrence G. Paull, art director David L. Snyder and special photographic effects supervisors Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich and David Dryer

Disc Two
DOCUMENTARY DANGEROUS DAYS: MAKING BLADE RUNNER
A feature-length authoritative documentary revealing all the elements that shaped this hugely influential cinema landmark. Cast, crew, critics and colleagues give a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the film -- from its literary roots and inception through casting, production, visuals and special effects to its controversial legacy and place in Hollywood history.

Disc Three
1982 THEATRICAL VERSION
This is the version that introduced U.S. movie-going audiences to a revolutionary film with a new and excitingly provocative vision of the near-future. It contains Deckard/Harrison Ford’s character narration and has Deckard and Rachel’s (Sean Young) “happy ending” escape scene.

1982 INTERNATIONAL VERSION
Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.

1992 DIRECTOR'S CUT
The Director's Cut omits Deckard's voiceover narration and removes the "happy ending" finale. It adds the famously-controversial "unicorn" sequence, a vision that Deckard has which suggests that he, too, may be a replicant.

Disc Four
BONUS DISC - “Enhancement Archive”
Featurette The Electric Dreamer: Remembering Philip K. Dick
Featurette Sacrificial Sheep: The Novel vs. The Film
Philip K. Dick: The Blade Runner Interviews (Audio)
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Cover Gallery (Images)

Featurette Signs of the Times: Graphic Design
Featurette Fashion Forward: Wardrobe & Styling
Screen Tests: Rachel & Pris
Featurette The Light That Burns: Remembering Jordan Cronenweth

Trailers & TV Spots
Featurette Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art
Marketing & Merchandise Gallery (Images)
Featurette Deck-A-Rep: The True Nature of Rick Deckard
Featurette Nexus Generation: Fans & Filmmakers

Disc Five
WORKPRINT VERSION
This rare version of the film is considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending,” altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more.

Also includes:
Commentary by Paul M. Sammon, author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner
Featurette All Our Variant Futures: From Workprint to Final Cut
sad to see br version outselling.... im telling you that the combo disk is killing hd
What do you mean...like you personally saw it in stores? Or do they have numbers already?

How's Hot Fuss? I almost got it at Best Buy for $29.99...does it have cool explosions and action sequences...hows the PQ...Is $29.99 as cheap as it gets...sorry, haven't been following that movie or Shawn of the Dead...I've never seen them.

just by daily monitoring thedvdwars.com... br version is currently 2 and hd 4 on amazon

in store... im predicting a total blowout for br ....in store prices are even worse..and people will usually go with the cheapest version..
ive said it a million times... these combo disks are holding the format back...

the same thing will happen to 300 that happenned to superman returns and departed.... the br version will outsell because of the $5 difference

shaun of the dead shipped from my netflix queue today

I saw hot fuzz at walmart for 25.99 and made FYE match it because I have an FYE card.

You will like Hot Fuzz if you liked Shaun of the Dead. If you haven't seen Shaun, then you will like both if you generally like british comedies.

PQ wise I would put it on par with The Departed

It's a great movie that lampoons the action genre and is almost pure action for the last 20 minutes.

I don't remember any explosions but there is a ton of gunfights.

Picked up 300 today at Target for $30. Going to pick up Hot Fuzz tomorrow from either Fry's or BB.

And Linkin, I would also recommend Hot Fuzz. Saw it when it was in theaters and it's one of my favorite movies of the year so far.

I also hate the dual combo disc. It's so worthless and actually prevents me from buying some movies I wanted due to insane prices. i still havent seen Miami Vice and wanted to get the HD movie, but the tacked on SD version raises the price by almost $10.

I hope they kill this combo idea.
I hope they kill this combo idea.
On the contrary, I am hoping HD DVD studios drop DVD's all-together and only release combos. This would automatically drop the price too.

Sounds decent. I'll rent it from Blockbuster.

300
Children of Men
Tokyo Drift
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
The Departed*

Just a few movies I've wanted to buy, but held off on 'cause I hate damn combo disks. It's not so much the price, but I hate flippers. HD group, please get with it and get rid of these things. Thanks.

*Eventually purchased this on Blu-Ray.

All they need to do is lower the price of the combo discs to the same price as regular non combo discs. Then they should just make all of the discs combo discs.

i know personally ill buy on blurray due to price why spend more money for essentially the same thing. ill never ever use the dvd side, and i dont let others borrow movies or games to begin with so that bears no weight on it.

I think the fact that Blu-Ray has a huge market share with the PS3 price drop is why 300 is selling more on BR. I personally enjoy Blu-Ray more as I have a PS3 with 1080p, while my 360 HD-DVD does 1080i...not a BIG deal, but the PS3 seems to handle it a bit better. Although, I support both formats.

i was actually wondering why they havent made a black add on for the 360.

i have the elite and the ps3.. i usually only get the exclusives on br and the rest on hd
i know personally ill buy on blurray due to price why spend more money for essentially the same thing. ill never ever use the dvd side, and i dont let others borrow movies or games to begin with so that bears no weight on it.
If you're getting it for just the movie, this is true. There's an exclusive HD-DVD game which I tried last night and is pretty crappy, but the HD-DVD version has the picture in picture commentary (which shows the blue screen version of every shot), which I thought was pretty cool.

Saw 300 last night...Awesome PQ, and sound...loved it. The PIP was really cool as well, never seen anything like that. I'm not a person that goes through the extras or commentaries but its still a very cool special feature.
i was somewhat bothered by all the grain in 300... i was expecting alot more but they said that its intended to look like that
It is. If you watch the PIP, you'll notice that so much detail is removed, the dirt marks on character faces were all done by special effects and not make up, you'll also notice that there's absolutely no grain whatsoever.
i was somewhat bothered by all the grain in 300... i was expecting alot more but they said that its intended to look like that
Synder was attempting to make the film look like the panels in Miller's novel. In the end the film is highly stylized.

The grain is meant to be there as Linkin Prime said. I'm surprised you didn't mention how desaturated the film looks or how blown out the contrast is. Of course both were also intended :)

I need to finish watching the movie.
hot fuzz got a great review... now it got me interested..

too bad its univeral and a combo... meaning it wont come cheap
25 bucks at walmart

I've seen and owned more movies then most. Having said that, 300 HD is the single best dvd in my collection. If this is the future of movies, I can't wait. It looks SO GOOD and I'm watching it in 1080p upscaled from 720p because I didn't get an elite yet. I can't wait to watch it with a pure 1080p signal. The transfer is spot on, no problem with any colors or halos, no artifacts. It is pure gold. The thing that sucks is that no where in austin had the the HD DVD version!

Two different best buys were sold out and so were both targets. I finally got the last copy at Circuit City. The bullshit part is that on two different occasions, while i stood there, someone also asked for the HDDVD version and was told they were out and they bought the BluRay version instead. So I wonder how much of this title's sales figures are going to be based on second choice purchasing instead of true consumer intent. Also, WTF is up with these stores under-ordering so deeply? Why is it that they had stacks of Blu but were sold out of HD?

Earlier you guys were complaining about combo discs. I made that argument here on the BD vs HD forum and got blasted for it, but i still believe it to be 100% true. I'm happy with this disc, but that combo format is going to kill us all in the long run.
