Ok... quickly because I'm sick of typing this.
Store buys game for $15 and sells it for $40. By the time they pay for overhead (payroll, rent, marketing, etc) they make a small profit on the game which is why they are there. Now lets say they dont sell your copy of the game for a few months and they only get $25, at that point they're probably making a tiny profit or breaking even. Let's say it still doesn't sell until eventually they move it for $10 to stop losing money on it....
They are there to make money, the trade in values are not nearly as absurd as you think they are.
The trade in values are also raised / lowered depending on how many people are trading in the title, I believe. They aren't going to give a ton of credit / cash for a game that someone probably trades in everyday.
Case in point, I know Gamestop gives 10 or 11 dollars for Gran Turismo 4, and charge 45 for it. Every store within 30 miles of me lists 4 + copies of Gran Turismo 4... they aren't going to give a ton of credit for a hot game if they are sitting on a ton of copies.
It's funny to think I would get the same amount of credit trading in Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance as I would Gran Turismo 4.
The only store who gives top dollar (i.e 25 - 30 dollars for popular games) is Gamerush I believe, and they bleeding money like crazy from what I've heard on these boards.
