Holy shit, trade in prices suck ass

I knew it was bad but wow. When I bought that GC bundle I wasn't really jazzed about Fight Night Round 2 so I thought about trading it in. I went to wherehouse.com and saw they sold it for $50 so I thought "Cool, Ima get around $25-30." Wrong. They buy it for $17.50. WTF is that. They will probably try to sell it for $40.

With that being said, anyone know the best place to trade in WWE Day of Reckoning and Fight Night Round 2 (both on GC)?

Day of Reckoning is $10 new at Circuit City. I wouldn't part with it. FNR2 would probably get half of a 2 for 1 at Rhino if you've got one (www.rhinovideogames.com).

Hell, you could probably sell FNR2 for $30 and DoR for $15 here and get $45.

DoR would probably make a great coaster for an energy drink. I'd say a coke, but they may be too big.

You have to ask yourself though, just how many prevented ring stains on the table would it take to balance out the cost?

Ok... quickly because I'm sick of typing this.

Store buys game for $15 and sells it for $40. By the time they pay for overhead (payroll, rent, marketing, etc) they make a small profit on the game which is why they are there. Now lets say they dont sell your copy of the game for a few months and they only get $25, at that point they're probably making a tiny profit or breaking even. Let's say it still doesn't sell until eventually they move it for $10 to stop losing money on it....

They are there to make money, the trade in values are not nearly as absurd as you think they are.

The trade in values are also raised / lowered depending on how many people are trading in the title, I believe. They aren't going to give a ton of credit / cash for a game that someone probably trades in everyday.

Case in point, I know Gamestop gives 10 or 11 dollars for Gran Turismo 4, and charge 45 for it. Every store within 30 miles of me lists 4 + copies of Gran Turismo 4... they aren't going to give a ton of credit for a hot game if they are sitting on a ton of copies.

It's funny to think I would get the same amount of credit trading in Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance as I would Gran Turismo 4.

The only store who gives top dollar (i.e 25 - 30 dollars for popular games) is Gamerush I believe, and they bleeding money like crazy from what I've heard on these boards.

So let me see... the sentence
"Holy shit, trade in prices suck ass"
means
"I was greatly surprised by low trade-in prices".

Your American dialect seems to replace many words with obscenities, perhaps to mask your poor vocabulary.

No, there is no need to demonstrate my point by replying in the same dialect.

Places do make a very nice margin on selling trades even given all of the overhead. They must considering from many accounts I've read here they make less than $10 per sale on new games they sell at $50. (Then consider how quickly games drop from $50 to $30 and even less...)

Please note that I did not say the stores should be offering more for trades or that they are evil for offering so little. They tell the customer what they'll give and the customer either takes it, or picks up their game and walks out. Nothing wrong with that.

I think Gamerush still sells fight night round 2 for $44.95 so it might give good trade. I don't imagine Day of Reckoning would have much trade value since the new one is about to come out next month.

I'm not picking a fight.

Just a thought Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2...

It was $30 within weeks of release.

Do you suppose the major retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, etc paid more than $30 for the first batch of games or did they pay $25 and reduce the price to increase sales?

Given Best Buy's $5 off any PS2 ($29.99 and greater) coupon, did major retailers ever pay more than $20 for the game?

As implied by my post, I have no first hand knowledge of this stuff. Maybe somebody that owns a store and/or somehow has the straight info can tell us the real scoop. IIRC there have been several people that have claimed that's what the big boys pay. This is all semi-tangential to the OP, however.

If there is a way to get $50 MSRP new release games for $20 or less, I'll be opening a full time eBay store tomorrow.

You're a douche.

The difference between $50 retail and $17.50 trade-in = $32.50 which covers their expenses like paying employees, advertising, store rent.

If you had sold it *direct* to the customer via ebay, thereby eliminating labor/ad/rent expenses, then you would have gotten $30-40.

(Aside - Of course, you'd still have to pay ebay's ~$2 listing fees, but that's still better than paying EBgames' $37.50 labor/ad/rent expenses.)

What do you mean if I had sold it direct, and would've gotten? I didn't sell it in the first place.

In your original message, it sounded like you sold Fight Night to the store for $17.50. Sorry.

Since you still have it, I recommend you list it on Ebay. If it's "like-new" condition, you should get $30-40.

I went to EB at the mall with 5 craptacular games and they offered me $3.75 total. I went two stores down to FYE where they offered me $32 for the same poo. I think you know my answer.

It's the same deal with cars. If you try to trade your old car in at a dealer, you get hosed on your trade-in value, but if you instead sell your old car to a private buyer, you get a couple grand more. The store/dealer has to pay for rent, utilities, salaries, benefits, etc. for their store that you as a private seller don't, so they can't offer you the same trade-in value as a private buyer and stay in business.

 fat chance, maybe if they were new sealed, perhaps, but if they're opened you would be looking at possible $20 for FNR2 and $8 for DOR. Sports games never get good trade in prices and sports games for the cube (where they sell the least) are even worse. As for DOR, it's nearly a year old, DOR 2 is right around the corner, not to mention the fact that it can be had at CC for $10.

Why don't you register on an auction site and try to make money that way. At Overstock.com Auctions you can set a min price and if you don't make it you don't have to sell it, therefore you don't lose money.

haha, so true.. I love the way you put it..

or u could just stick it to EB or GS by buying off games from people who are looking to trade them in. I once got a GC for $35, a stack of 8 dvds for $15 in cash and today I got a snes mini with 10 games for $30, i probably could have offered him $20 but he seemed hard up so I just agreed (that I will be able to part out and ebay for $75)

Make sure you leave the store before engaging in a trade with another customer though. I've kicked many people out for doing this inside the store.

there is a used/new record store by where I live and they give fairly good prices on used goods, I would check to see if there are any small places like that near u
