Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - Nobody Wants This Game To End... Ever...
Me, too. The 3D view may as well not be there. I feel like I'm playing one of those ASCII dungeon crawlers.
I wouldn't say that the 3D view shouldn't be there, I mean have you tried looking at it and walking around? It's pretty impressive for the hardware thats running it.

It's nice to take a glance at the 3D view once in a while. Some of the locations are actually quite good looking. The roof is very pretty, and you can see the lighting change as time passes.

It's not that bad graphically, it's just a little disorienting.
It's not that bad graphically, it's just a little disorienting.
I'll give you that. Trying to move around with just the 3D screen probably wouldn't get me anywhere in that game. But like it was said above you, it is cool to have just to sneak a peek of what things look like around you.

...but the whole time you'd automatically not want to trust Kyle. It would feel too filler; I'd much rather be greedy and ask them to wrap up the current story. :D

good point... a side story on a Nile investigation would work as well with new characters.

I just started playing this the other day. I'm about an hour and a half into into and I'm really enjoying it. So far Hotel Dusk seems to be the type of game where I loose track of time, I start playing, look up at the clock, and realize 20-30 minutes have past when I could have sworn I've been playing for 5 or 10.

It's nice to see this thread hasn't died. Maybe sometime in the future, one of us can bump it announcing "HOTEL DUSK THE SEQUEL/PREQUEL!" And it'll be great.

with the semi-underground brisk sales of the game, I hope it happens.

I want to go back and play this again. Last time I was mesmerized by a game like this was Shadow of the Colossus... it took me totally by surprise.

So, I've put my copy up on ebay, and it'll be out of the house within a week.

But, I haven't yet beat it. I'm......(last chapter spoilers and questions....)

in the basement. The room gets locked and air is in short supply. I've checked the registry, I've checked the blue book, I've checked the red book. I go back to the table, do everything there --- outlet, safe with letter, hammer, file+graphite, start up the computer. start putting in the code. the last 4 times I've done this part, I die at the EXACT same moment. Which is either incredible coincidence, or I'm not tripping a trigger. I die exactly at the end of plugging in "Osterzone is Dunning". 4 times in a row now, exactly at that point.

Is it a timing issue, am I missing something else? I even started from back in the wine cellar and redid everything twice, and I keep dying after typing in "Dunning".

Any ideas?

try restarting after dying... from there the game should give you the time needed.

Just finished the game.

I must say the second half of the game is much, much stronger than the first half, and that the ending is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I'd had in a while.

I'll post more thoughts about it later. It's late and I gots stuffs to do tomorrow.

Are you typing in the code exactly as it is written in the letter, including the line break? I got stuck there, too, and it turned out that I had mistyped slightly. It was close enough for me to figure out what it said, but the game wants you to get it exactly right before it lets you out of the room.

Otherwise, did you find the secret number on the "blank" paper? Make sure to use the black light on it, or you can also tilt the DS screen to see it. Then set the dial on the computer to that number before entering the code.

Hope that helps you out. I can't think of anything else.

My reply or: how I figured out I'm a gigantic moron.

Ah, you know what? I was typing in each individual word, not the entire sentence at once. That's it.

I guess you're supposed to key in the whole phrase, THEN hit enter and it reveals the secret that I now know since I read the 3rd word already. :)

Thanks for your help. I'll try it tonight.

I did the EXACT same thing, and kept getting game overs, for a LONG time so don't feel too bad.

Makes me feel better. :)

I just *knew* there was something I was missing. Hadn't counted on it being a problem there.

man, this game could be in the top runnings for "most overrated" this year.
Not meaning to hate. I consider myself to have a pretty good sense for when a game would appeal to me, but I feel tricked by all the mainstream, non-mainstream, and indie press who praised this game as the best thing since Phoenix Wright. I've tried a few times to get into it...didn't work.

Yeah, I loved Phoenix Wright from the very beginning of the game. It took quite awhile for Hotel Dusk to really get me interested, not until around Chapter 3 or 4. But from that point on, it was like PW all over again, and I didn't want to put the game down.

I do think the game would be better with more puzzles. If the next one has Hotel Dusk's length, characters, and story with Trace Memory's amount of tricky puzzles, it'd be perfect.

It didn't require me to play any further than the first chapter for me to say to myself, "This is what DS gaming is all about."

:) nicely said. It's the only DS title where I felt like someone finally found the perfect use for the system.

Finally finished the game over the weekend. First time in a long time that I've felt that post-adventure game ennui that used to be reserved for LucasArts adventures and possibly Phoenix Wright. Kinda depressed. Didn't help that I watched the series finale of Six Feet Under on DVD later the same day.:cry::cry:

I wasn't aware there were multiple endings. How do you achieve them? If I have to start over, it's probably not going to happen (and all three of my games are saved right near the end). Nevertheless, I am curious.

Funny that this thread got bumped today. I happened to finish the game today too. Started it sometime last week. Maybe it's because I'm a girl, but I cried many times late in the game, as you start to learn more about everyone and their stories. There were several times when I cried hard enough for a sob to escpape my lips. No video game has ever caused that kind of reaction in me.

The following has information on how to get the best ending. I copied this from a description of a YouTube video.

Note: You can't get this ending on your first playthrough.
Here's a description of how to get Mila's Treasure:
When you play the game a 2nd time, then Louie gives you a "mystery cassette tape" (I think in chapter 8). Listen to the tape in Louie's room and you hear a code. Write it down. Then at the end of the game, when you are in a room with a computer, you have to enter this code (but first you have to enter the real code and leave the room, then reenter and enter this secret code). You then get a message about a nostalgic secret in room 220. After you wake up in your room and some people talked to you, you can go into this room 220 to finally get mila's treasure.

the second ending is real nice and I hope leads into a sequal.
Excellent. Though I loved the game, not sure I could go through it a second time to see that ending. Thanks for the link.
same here. It's so impacting of a game, but really demands alot of attention from the player just to see those last few seconds.

Thanks for that. Provides a little bit more closure.

But still, it seems like there were a lot of unresolved storylines, most significantly the Woodwards/Iris storyline. Iris pretty much drops off the face of the Earth a good ways from the end of the game, and is never seen or heard from again, which seemed weird, especially when everyone else gets a last word in one way or another.

Anyway, I'd love a sequel, but given the abyssmal sales of titles like this, it seems unlikely. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I checked there in the morning. Didn't see anyone.
the second ending is real nice and I hope leads into a sequal.
I could go for a sequal or a prequal but the second ending felt out of character to me.

I finally got around to playing Room 215 about a month ago... I finished going through Phoenix Ace & Justice and writing my own little faqs for them (not online, just in a notebook). I went straight into Dusk and... hated it. For a while. Kyle is completely unlikable until the second half of the game, and the pacing and b&w/sepia graphics were such a drastic change from Phoenix that it was like when you're on a roller coaster going all fast, enjoying the thrills and then you hit those brakes that bring you to an almost complete stop.

Anyway, a question to anyone who would know. Regarding the vending machine.
My first time playing, I never got change out of Dunning. Second time, I got change and managed to get a Lipstick out of the machine. Gave it to Rosa.

Do you always get the lipstick? Or are there different items? Does the lipstick only get accepted by Rosa, or will other characters take it?

There are different items that you can get from the vending machine, but they influence the game not at all. During your first playthrough of the game, you can get a
Pinkie Rabbit. I want to say you give it to the little girl, but I'm not sure. I know you can show it to people, and they'll comment on it, but really, it serves no purpose.

As for the comparison between Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk, I see what you mean. Phoenix Wright is exciting, and the characters and dialogue thrill you and keep you going. Kyle Hyde is...Kyle Hyde. The game doesn't have that rush that Phoenix gives you. I don't think that Hotel Dusk is a good game to play immediately after Phoenix Wright. And you're right, Kyle isn't a likeable character, and even when he plays the good guy, he isn't always selfless (except perhaps during the Christmas bit). Hotel Dusk is gritty and "real" is some ways, and while I thorougly enjoyed it, it isn't as easy to recommend as Phoenix Wright.

all items are available for different people in the hotel. they affect the ending slightly I hear.

The following post shows the only way to change the game's ending.

i just rented this game from gamefly and im not sure about it. hopefully it gets more interesting, the biggest thing buggin me is that i cant figure out how to save...

i must be stupid to not know how to save. :wall:
You can only save when you're not talking to another character. If I remember right, it's an icon down at the bottom of the screen, like where you can see your items and read your notebook. Sorry to be so vague...

^yeah, you select the notebook, and there should be a save/load option.

I only just got to chapter 2, but i really like this game. the dialogue is top notch.

Thanks for the info about the Vending Machine, guys.
i must be stupid to not know how to save. :wall:
Naw... sometimes the obvious stuff is the stuff we can't figger out. Tap your Notepad Icon at the bottom of the screen (just not when you're talking to someone) and then pick Save/Load.
As for the comparison between Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk, I see what you mean. Phoenix Wright is exciting, and the characters and dialogue thrill you and keep you going.
There was a point in Dusk where it did get a bit exciting. Not thrilling or anything like that. But exciting from the point of view of someone who enjoys literature and good stories. Dusk isn't great writing, don't get me wrong. But about... maybe half of the way into the story things begin to fall into place and at the same time, begin to fall apart. When there are too many coincidences and too many "oh my gosh, you're involved too?!"

In my world, people are nice. Kyle's an attitude and a jerk to too many people. He's nice when the mood hits him. And that's not my kinda character.

Taken for what it is, the game is enjoyable (once you get a feel for what you're doing). The character is written as a jerk, that's just how it is. Once I get past that, the mystery was well enough constructed and unfolded pretty well.

Towards the final quarter of the game too much came together too fast. I would have enjoyed the final hours to have been broken down into one more chapter to stretch things out just a little bit better.

This is definately a game I'd recommend as a rental. Easily wrapped up within five days, and once you finish, you're just about done. You can play again for the better ending, but the mystery, the unknown factor is gone. So spending $30 on this may be a waste to quite a few players.

Phbhbt. Kyle Hyde is awesome. Big thick chin, stubble, a jackass. He's me in video game form.

So if you don't like him you vicariously don't like me according to my non-sequiter poorly-thought-out logic.

So screw you guys. I hope he comes back in a sequel and is an even bigger jerk, kicking puppies left and right and tipping waitresses way less than he should be.
In my world, people are nice. Kyle's an attitude and a jerk to too many people. He's nice when the mood hits him. And that's not my kinda character.
Come on, Guin. Does the word "antihero" mean anything to you? Kyle is the classic film noir archetype: world weary, cynical, self serving. But underneath is a heart of gold and the desire to make things right. He's no different than Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe. Hell, Harrison Ford has played the same archetype at least three times (Han Solo, Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, Indiana Jones). I think it's a disservice to simply write off that kind of character as "a jerk."

I think one of the best parts of the game is the way it gives you the choice between being callous and insensitive or taking a genuine interest in the people around you. Choose the first option too often, and sooner or later it will be game over for you. And yet he never really lets down his gruff exterior. I would have lost interest pretty quick if Kyle had walked up to everyone saying, "Gosh howdy! My name's Kyle Hyde! You folks sure look nice! What can I do ya for?"
