We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!

So HP Touchpad users. How is this thing. I want to rely on your accounts and feedback with this device and not just tech reviews. I may try to jump in on the fray but im thinking of two other alternatives. Refurb IPAD 1 or Amazon Kindle Fire.
Some early looks at the Fire are concerned that the cpu is pretty gimped.
yeah also heard that it only has 2 points of touch compared to the Ipad which has 10 points of touch at one time.

Wow that sucks since its using a dual core. may just spend the extra hundred and be safe with an IPAD.

The fire doesn't look to bad, but it is smaller and will undoubtedly have more app support which is a plus.

The only thing I don't like from what I've seen with the wife's touchpad is the lack of apps, especially netflix (which the fire might not have anyways because amazon wants their prime service to be used more) and I'm sure the fire will capitalize on that.

I think the fire only has 8b of internal storage as well, granted you get Amazon's cloud service for free so thats kind of a moot point.

Otherwise other minuses? Well supposedly a gimped CPU and no cameras. Depending on how bad the CPU is that could be a deal breaker. But I think it all comes down to the apps and Amazon will do just fine.

I have considered canceling my 32 gig HP touchpad order with the Amazon announcement but I noticed touchpads are still going for $250+ on eBay and we've already did a investment by buying a lot of the accessories.

If you can find one, it's def. worth the new retail price.
You do have to go in knowing that there aren't a lot of apps. If you're mainly going to use it to surf the web and check email, you should be good to go.
I'm not sure that Fire will support Outlook calendars, which the TP does flawlessly. It may I just haven't thoroughly checked.
Amazon Videos is a nice feature though.

I don't think the Amazon Fire is for us tech savy people. It is probably not very powerful and unless you root it (which will happen) it's probably just going to be an Amazon device. I would think that if you can get a TouchPad for the fire sale price you go with that or you could wait until the reviews for the Fire start coming out but I doubt it would have a processor that is even comparable to the first iPad.
I ordered in the evening of the 21st, but the 1st e-mail I received from them that said my purchase order had been received was on the 22nd.

I'm guessing they aren't going to honor my order since on the website my order status says I ordered on the 22nd (which isn't the case). Looks like it's time to be bitter about it.
I also ordered on the 21st but my status page shows the 23rd. I called hp smb and they said that the 23rd is the date it was processed. They also verified I was getting one a soon as they become available. You can call this number to check your actual status 1 888 728 9985.

It's definitely worth it. I use mind every day for my emulators, web surfing, email, youtube, music, and note-taking for my college classes. I also like using my tablet for my documents. I type my notes so I don't have to keep flipping through my notebook in class. It's worth every penny. The facebook and twitter apps are really good as well.

Not sure if it'll help any but back here I did a quick little rundown of pros/cons of the iPad2, Asus Transformer and the Touchpad.

Are there any other emulators beside the SNES one in the app catalog?

The fire has a dual core processor it can't be that bad. It's still going to perform better then that Vizio tablet. 199 isn't a bad price. I'd get one if I just didn't get a Touchpad (touchpads screwed up the tablet market). The only negative thing I can think of about the kindle fire is lack of GPU (not that our TP's use its GPU since HP disabled it on webos) and the 7 inch screen. Seriously 7 inch screens are freaking tiny especially next to a 10 inch screen. I like the 10 inch screen since its large enough to be shared with others and fine details can be seen at a distance.

In any case, I hope this 199 tablet fu@ks over all the HP touchpad hoarders that haven't off loaded their units yet.
Are there any other emulators beside the SNES one in the app catalog?
I'll check right now. Brb. There's this emulator entitled Dream Engine free. It plays PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 games. I haven't downloaded any emulators but it's showing a picture of Super Street Fighter 2 and Outrun. I'll look into this app later on.

Lot of misinformation there.

There is no modern mobile cpu out there that doesn't have a GPU. The amazon tablet certainly has one, it's just a question of which one and how integrated the OS is with it. It likely is running an OMAP4 cpu of some iteration since rumor has it it's a downgraded playbook.

webOS on the Touchpad does use the GPU in many places. It most certainly is not deactivated (that's not even possible).

I got a fire ordered and I'm either going to cancel my HP order or unload it as a *nice* Christmas gift to a friend. My wife already has a 16 gig touch from that Tigerdirect deal.

Either way thanks to CAG otherwise I would have neither tablet. Cheapy D and the contributors on this site have made me very happy.

The Kindel Fire, just like the iPad 2, is not the most powerful tablet out there but because the OS they are using are optimized for that specific hardware they are goings to run very smoothly.

JP thanks for posting this again, the comparisons are nice.
Not sure if it'll help any but back here I did a quick little rundown of pros/cons of the iPad2, Asus Transformer and the Touchpad.
There's a SCUMMVM implementation (Tales of Monkey Island, The Dig, Full Throttle, etc) and also a N64 emulator (still on alpha I think). These are not available from the App catalog though. The SCUMM VM app can be downloaded from the official SCUMMVM forums. I'm not sure where to get the N64 one though, saw it posted on a forum once but can't remember where

Where was I? Oh, yes...

During my "vacation", I won an ASUS Transformer and it's slick. Much lighter than the Touchpad and it feels hella faster. I'm still tweaking it out, but I think I may be going with this for big tablet duties.

The Kindle Fire is exactly what I thought Amazon could do and with the $199 price point, they just put a bullet in the Nook Color's dome and will take a HUGE bite out of the iPad's sales. Even if we weren't in dire economic times, the choice between a $499 iPad or his-and-hers Fires plus $101 in content for the same price is extremely tempting. I've got my pre-order in. Can't pass up checking it out for this price.

This ain't sounding too good:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/29/hp...ore-popular-than-expected-crushes-web-server/

People love the $99 TouchPad including HP employees. The TouchPad hit the HP’s employee purchasing program yesterday and potential buyers showed up en mass, promptly crashing the servers. It’s unclear how many TouchPads were sold, but my HP source didn’t manage to snag a cheap TouchPad yet. Instead, he received (and forwarded) an email detailing the problem and warning employees not to bother the call center with their woes. “Our site is too slow,” he said. HP might still have TouchPads reserved for employees as he hasn’t received an email stating they’re sold out.
Hopefully after HP takes care of its employees the company will release the last TouchPads to retailers. After the first batch dried up last month, most stores started wait lists after HP announced more were on their way. My daily routine involves checking several retailers’ websites in the hope that I stumble upon an active Buy Now link — apparently a good chunk of HP’s 300,000 employees are doing the same thing right now.

That happened too quick (1/2 hour after getting my newsletter). I wish they'd send out unique codes to give more people (e.g. me!) a chance at picking up these apps when I don't carry my touchpad with me.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I am probably just an idiot, but when I seach the app store on the touchpad to find things like Spashtop, the results always come back saying nothing found...but I know I am typing it in right. Any ideas? Also, I still have no idea how to sign up for the newsletter, which sucks. Why can't they just make apps free for a day like everyone else.

Edit: figured it out. Had to run the latest update. Would have loved that At Bat app.

No prob. Well I'm also signed up and I receive the emails but not until hours after the codes are dead, so idk what that's about.

Not sure if others have got the email as well but I just received one from hp saying my touchpad order from SMB just went through. This seems like the batch they just had made since I received my initial order 2 weeks ago or so from SMB.

And they didn't limitcit to one per customer. This order has 3 in it. One for my mom, wife and myself...though I was able to already get each of us one in the meantime. Oh well.

For me, the best case is the official HP Folio.
It fits. It's understated and low-key. It doesn't add a ton of thickness to the device. I do carry the TP around in a slingbag 75% of the time though.

For me the best case is the Targus Truss case, but the HP case is much, much easier to use with the Touchstone than the Targus case. I carry my TouchPad in my backpack and in my laptop carrying case. The Targus Truss case is significantly thicker than the HP case. Plus, the Targus case has an elastic strap to close the case. The HP case does not have an apparatus to keep the case closed.
