I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

I enjoyed watching Mushi-Shi -- couldn't wait for each volume to get released. It's an atmospheric storytelling experience about life and unseen creatures called mushi-shi that affect regular people and the environment. You're good as long as you don't expect typical action anime. It's smartly written and beautifully animated.

Kind of hard to explain, but it's zen'ish, yet not boring. The protagonist travels all around (Japan) to places that have experienced strange phenomena and he sort of tries to help solve problems. It doesn't always have a happy ending.

Read up on more reviews (Amazon, Netflix, etc.) or find a clip somewhere to see if it's your thing. While I was hooked, not sure if I feel it's necessary to watch over and over again though. Worth the price however.

My store wasn't listed but I swung by anyway. I didn't see any of the 50% off stickers people were reporting from stores that have this sale but I didn't bother to wait in line to get anything scanned.

Turned down. even got treated like i stole that add sign, lol. so i made the guy call the other store and ask for john.

Scan your local store for titles you're interested in & then try in-store pickup. They'll hold a title for you for 8 days.
 
Man that was a long ass day for me...

I went out and got caught in a snowstorm. They were saying only an inch after 2pm but there was lot more than that. Several accidents to and from Christiansburg, VA on I-81.

Watch out on Fullmetal Alchemist. The full season 1 set ends on episode 25 and season 2 part 1 starts on episode 29. I ended up having to buy episodes 26, 27, and 28 from rightstuf. (currently $6 dollars). Why they did this, I do not know.

I'm not sure why they did that, but the Season 2 complete box set that's supposed to be released next Tuesday (March 10th) will have 26-51. Maybe some of these stores will get it in as one of those A or B tier titles, but you'll be able to pick it up and argue for clearance prices. That'd be nice. As if I didn't already spend enough today (~$375).

It's out of print and like $50 for a new one on ebay, too. :cry: I've been wanting it for a little while, myself, but haven't found it anywhere.
 
Nice to see another Shana fan here, speedy! Also thanks to whoever mentioned mushi-shi. I saw that on the shelf and decided to hold off but, I will definitely be going back tomorrow to pick that one up. Also, has anyone had any luck arguing 50% off for the afro samurai DVD's? If there's a chance, I might as well give it a try as long as I'm going back.

Did they take 50% off blu-rays? How about the Hamburg store? Did you see Ergo Proxy, Le Chevalier, Speed Grapher, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Helllsing Ultimate steelbooks?

I was able to get Akira, Freedom, and Afro Samurai Resurrection Blu-Rays overridden this morning shortly after opening. I brought them along with a stack of regular DVDs to the cashier and asked her to check if the Blus would be half price, too. After confirming that they weren't ringing up automatically (even after pressing total) and that the standard DVDs were, she went to check on the signs. When she came back she called a manager over and explained to him that it didn't specify any limitations like "DVD only." I went back around 6pm to pick up more stuff, and they had little pieces of paper stapled to all the placards on the shelves that said something like "Attention customers, Offer does not apply to Blue Rays [sic]." Either store management put some effort into matching the color scheme and font style, or that seemed to have been printed and cut out from some official memo. I took it as a sign that it wasn't a wise idea to buy the editted-together movie version of Gunbuster/Diebuster, but I wish I could have gotten Vexille Oh well, I'm sure it'll show up on sale anyway on Amazon or Buy.com eventually.

I was looking for the first School Rumble collection, and their customer courtesy computer said they had 3. I told the guy who came to help me that I already checked the shelves, and he made the claim that the computer's usually just slow and that someone probably just bought them earlier. I've been shopping at Best Buy forever, checking inventory at home and with the internal inventory system, traveling if need be. If anything, the customer-exposed website inventory will be slow showing if something comes in-stock, but it is ultra-conservative and quick to show something as not available. Purchases take an hour to propagate from the individual store to the whole corporate network, but those DVDs weren't even there this morning, so it couldn't have been a recent purchase.

$144.95. I can't wrap my head around it that it would be over $285 normally. Such a great deal.

Went today around 5 PM, spending roughly an hour and a half looking and figuring out what I wanted. I saw alot of the bigger, more known animes were pretty gone (Melancholy of Haruhi, Gunslinger girl boxset, Lucky star boxset, etc.). They did have alot of Full Metal Alchemist left, and a bit of other stuff.

Just felt like I could have gotten more though, if I had gotten there earlier. Ugh. I might go check another nearby Best Buy tomorrow and see what they have.

Blu-ray wise...Where do I start to explain my fury with these employees. I walk to to check-out and the girl notices the blu-ray price didn't ring up 50%. I tell her the titles (Vexille, Ghost in a Shell 2) are both anime. She checks the others (dvds) and they ring up fine except for two of the Lucky star ones; she fixed those with no problem. She then calls over a guy I had seen who looks like he had been working there maybe 3 months and wasn't sure of stuff. I tell him like I told her, how they have the DVD version in stock, and how if that is in the anime section, this should apply also since it's basically the same thing aside from price. He gets another guy that then begins to tell me how the blu-ray anime is not actually considered anime in the store, it's considered blu-ray. And how, because of the higher price, it isn't part of the deal. Knowing my stupid self and how I hate to argue, I gave up that easily. I shouldn't have, I know it. And after reading other peoples posts and how they ended up getting the discount, I'm going to return Vexille on DVD and go for Blu-ray again. I might even pick up Akira since they had it also. But sadly they didn't have any Appleseed Ex Machina left; which is one I really wanted on Blu-ray.

Argh, that made me upset inside. Any advice for when I go back?

I finally completed the Deathnote series by getting the three remaining Limited Edition Boxsets (Vols. 7,8, & 9) for $14.99 each :applause:

Last week, my GF and I went to the local BB and it had a ton of anime, sadly it was not part of the clearance. I decided I'd check it out just incase and the place was ransacked. I have no idea what happened cause I asked to check some prices and none came up 50%. Maybe people got in early and cause every other store in the area had the promo got their anime 50% off. Maybe they're going to the other stores and returning it, no idea.

@junglalien: I didn't try the blu-rays but from what I've read in the thread so far, they won't automatically ring at 50% off but, you should be able to convince CS to override the price.
Hamburg is on the list but, I didn't visit that one. (A bit of a drive for me and I already spent almost $300.)
As for the individual series you mentioned: Ergo Proxy: might have saw one volume, not quite sure as I wasn't specifically looking for it. I saw several mixed volumes for Le Chevalier, Speed Grapher, Death Note (with and without the figures), and Hellsing. I also saw a couple complete boxsets for hellsing (although I don't believe they were steelbook). I didn't see any cowboy bebop.
Again, I was at the Clarence and Walden Galleria locations. Hope that helps.

I kinda feel like I should have bought more anime today since it'll probably be the only time I buy anime this year. I feel that way because I enjoy anime but I've been out of the loop as far as anime goes for awhile now. This was the perfect opportunity to get back in.

I couldn't bring myself to dishing out even at 50% for naruto boxes. Playing Rise of the Ninja has made me wanna watch the show, but not at that price. It's partially because I've grown used to buying shows in their entirely lately. Viridian Collection releases are quite awesome though. I really have grown out of the need to always get special/limited editions, and the only way to get me to care is if it comes with a soundtrack.
 
Wow. Looks like I need to stop by on my home tomorrow from work. At 50% off, I can probably get a handful of thinpaks for a decent price.

My main argument for getting the discount was that their little signs said "all anime titles," not "all anime titles on DVD." It seems that some stores have wised up and appended that little piece of fine print to the signs, but your store may not have done so, and so you have the right as a customer to take advantage of their mistake. The manager I argued with didn't want to give in, but I think I was adamant enough and he just didn't want to deal with me anymore.

I also pointed out (repeatedly) how Afro Samurai volume 1 rang up as $9.99 and I didn't understand why it was included and other anime Blu-ray titles weren't. I told the manager that it ought to be all or nothing.

Honestly, Best Buy's big mistake was not specifying on those signs that the sale was only for titles on DVD.

And don't worry, I hate arguing as well. But when there's a loophole, man, you bet your ass I'm going to exploit it. Best Buy's mistake is my gain.

I feel the exact same way. I haven't bought an anime for months and now that I see this I go and spend almost $200 easy. It's a good feeling since I've wanted to buy more for a while but it's just too dang expensive. This sale helped alot. I still feel like I should have bought more, though. Which is why I'm so eager to go again tomorrow.

And I agree, the naruto boxsets are way overpriced. 50% off they would still be about $20-$25. My local walmart has them for $20 as a normal price.

Just to clarify, the newer full season Fullmetal Alchemist box sets are NOT to be mixed and matched with the older Fullmetal Alchemist collections (i.e. the season x part y sets). When FUNimation originally released FMA in sets, they released it in four box sets: season 1 part 1 (eps 1-16), season 1 part 2 (eps 17-28), season 2 part 1 (eps 29-40), and season 2 part 2 (eps 41-51). The recently released full FMA season 1 collection (eps 1-25) is supposed to go with the upcoming season 2 collection (eps 26-51) being released on 3/10.

In other words, if you want the whole TV series without any missing episodes, you should...

a) return the season 2 part 1 and season 2 part 2 box sets and buy the full season 2 box set on the 10th; or

b) return the full season 1 box set and get the season 1 part 1 and season 1 part 2 box sets if Best Buy still has them.

Or you could do want 499deal did. I know that was a bit confusing but I hope that helped.
 
Grabbed Chevalier D'eon Series for $25 at Greensburg PA store, last one. Saw the Death Note boxes, both Afro Sams, and most of the other things mentioned. Plenty of stock!
 
How is Girl Who Leapt Through Time? I was looking at it today at BB and contemplating it (though I did get Gurren Lagann, Black Lagoon, and Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan).
