My panel has been selected for jury duty tomorrow :cry:

How does the process work?

Anyway guys I went to jury duty today to partake in the judicial process of jury selection. Yes, some folks were AMPED as heck to be included in this process, me for one was rather tired and bored, but would fulfill the task at hand if need be. We wait for around in hour in the jury confernce room. Then they inform us that their are two Criminal Trials that will take place today and will create a juror panel from the potential juror pool.

We are called one by one up to the court room on the next floor where the case will be heard and jury will selected. We wait in the juror holding room, a room which is connected to the court room, very small room, and their was 25 of us cramped in their. They call us all to have a seat in the court room, The judge then introduces all of the potential jurors to all parties of the this case. If any jurror knows any of the particapant in the case, then that can influence that jurror of not bein slected for the jury panel.

The judge then gives us an overview of the case. The Proscuter then ask the jurror pool basic questions such as Have you had a friend or family member be the victim of a violent crime.....assault, killed, rape stuff like that. Once proscuter ask all her questions, she brainstorms on which of the jurrors do they want on the panel, and one's they dont. The Defence attorney then does the same exact thing, ask questions, and then selects who they want on the panel and who they dont.

Then the Defense and Proscuter exchange notes, and agree upon 12 jurrors for the panel of this case. Needless to say I was not selected, I was incompetent, I dont even know what that means, but hey I was not selected for jury panel because of it. The defedant was accused of .....

1x count of Cardinal Knowledge
1x count of Assault
10x counts of Rape

the girl who he was accused of raping was 13 years old, and the defendant looked about 40.......The panel that was selected consisted of

9 White old men
2 white older ladies
1 Black guy

The defendant is black, so needless to say, the panel will eat him alive....and I dont get my 30 dollars until 8 weeks (Thats how long they said it takes)

Do unto others and all that - were you indicted for something, would you want people bailing out on jury duty so much that you ended up with a pool of 78-year old white women looking over your fate?
 
300 panel numbers have been selected tomorow, so do we all serve or do they have an interview process? about how many are selected

Thank you, I cant read well enough to bother with a book (jk), but i can sure play a videogame :lol:, except the jury summons says no electronics or cell phones allowed in the building, subject to search
 
Definitely take some reading material. My county allows laptops in the jury room but I guess it varies.

This. I abhor whining and bitching about jury duty. I've done it 3 times and I'm pleased to do it every time.
 
Honestly I dont think I could deem a man guilty and have him get sentenced to 10-20 years or life in front of his family and Children, I couldent live with myself knowing that

You would have that tugging in the back of your mind did I just sentence a innocent man.....

You sit around a lot drinking bad coffee until being called (maybe) for a trial. Its really all pretty boring, at least has been the last 4 times I went.
 
Jury duty is lame-ass. Are you like, for sure on the jury, or are you in the jury-selection stage?

If the latter, yeah, just act all racist and shit.
 
My dad was on one for a couple weeks and a guy asked to be removed on like the second to last day because he wanted to go on vacation. The judge excused him and told him he now had to come back when he returned from vacation and do another couple weeks. PWND!

I am in selections, I have to go tomorow to do an interview and wait around and stuff

I've never been called for Jury Duty yet, but I have heard that it can be a long/boring process of selection. Just hope for no OJ Simpson trials...

Exactly - I can't stand the ppl who are like "Oh I'm super glad to do my duty you whiner blah blah" - well maybe you have a cushy life but some ppl actually depend on their living to pay rent and eat. Notice it's often the people who champion themselves as liberal champions of the working-class man who are often the most out-of-touch.

I believe that's what they are referring to when they mention "beyond a shadow of a doubt". If they are declared guilty, you shouldn't have that feeling.
 
I had it a couple weeks ago. No one got selected as nothing on the docket that day ended up going to jury trial (all pleas and one chose a bench trial). Was still stuck there from 8:30-3:15, but I just read and got some work done. Wished I'd have brought my laptop as they had wifi. Pay here is only $15, but my job is salaried so missing a day doesn't affect my pay anyway.

It's pretty painless in my county as they do the "1 day/1 trial" system where you just come in and sit through the process for 1 day and if selected just do 1 trial (most are 1-3 days, occasionally a longer one) and your done. A trial or showing up for a day and not being selected still fulfills your duty for 3-5 years (and probably longer given the large population in my county). Not that it matters since I'll be moving in a year or so anyway.

Up to the employer. They're just not allowed to fire people for missing work for jury duty, but they're not legally bound to pay them for days missed for jury duty.

And people like you is the reason there are so many guilty repeat offenders walking the streets today.

Do innocent people end up being tried in criminal cases? Yes, it happens. The majority of the time though there is a reason the person is sitting in the defendant seat. I wouldnt feel too bad about sending them away if the evidence pointed in their direction though.

And yes, Jury Duty is a waste of time, expect a lot of waiting. Sometimes you get lucky and they will let you out quickly but I wouldnt count on that. These people do the crime and we get to pay for it with this "civic duty" nonsense.

When you get your license, when you fill out the paper that asks your political stance it should ask if you are one of the people who like Jury Duty. It seems to be about split 50/50 from what Ive heard of people who feel good about getting a chance to serve their country (or maybe they just like to feel important or wanted for once in their life) to people who absolutely hate getting that letter in the mail. Let those who enjoy it go and let the rest of us get on with our own life.

That would bias the jury pool far to much and make it too hard to get a trial "by a jury of your peers" as we are guaranteed the right to by law.

It's already biased enough with being drawn from motor vehicle records and voter registration databases. Not really a jury of peers for someone from a poor, inner city neighborhood where many people don't own cars nor register to vote.

I hated wasting a day in the process as much as the next guy, but the jury system is a cornerstone of our justice system and we should do our duty when called. I feel for people who struggle to make ends meet and won't get paid for their days off from work, but a civic duty is a civic duty.

Yeah Jury Duty sucks only (imho) because you get paid shit. My job will pay for the first five days of jury duty I think, but after that It's $50 a day. I couldn't live off of $50 a day, that's about $6.25 which is BELOW our state minimum wage. I've heard of putting aside money incase you get fired/seriously ill, but jury duty? It's fucking stupid.

People like me? how I never served in the jury before

You ever heard of people bein free due to DNA evidence after they served many years of their life in prison....Im just one guy who would find it never impossible to find someone guilty unless an officer witness the crime, while grandma was their videotaping the incident of R kelly pissing on her.....I plead the FIFTH!

If you want to get out of jury duty just shit your pants before you go in for selection. This tactic only works in large cities. Small town residents will have to live in shame afterwards.

My dad had a friend who just sat in the chair looking over his shoulder in a paranoid, twitchy manner a few times every minute. He's been called like 3 or 4 times and got out every single time just by doing that. Not saying a word, just simply acting strange.
