I kinda want FMV games to come back

Let's face it, the biggest reasons that FMV games failed back in the day were 1) bad video quality, 2) limited storage space, and 3) bad acting. The first two have been eliminated due to upgrades in technology. I'm pretty sure nobody even knows what 640x480 looks like anymore, and that was GOOD at the time. Plus, with the advances in bluray (and DVDs i guess, for you guys still stuck in the stone age), not only we we be able to have high definition video, we'll be able to have many different cutscenes, meaning the game doesn't ahve to be completely linear. As for the last point, sure the possibility of bad acting is still there, but with the costs of making a game nowadays, is any company going to allow something that isn't at least decent to be released? Then consider a big company doing this. EA won't care how many takes it takes, shit better get done and get done right.

Discuss.

Give me some examples of FMV games? R u talking about the digitized/pixelated cd type games? What kind of game was Dragon's Lair? I think it was a laserdisc in a arcade cabinet. I def think 2D HD mature animation would make for some killer games. Even Lunar style full anime games would be nice. A game like Heavy Rain (context prompts/story based) would seem to benefit from this presentation style. My fave art direction this gen is fau-cell shading ala Borderlands and anything Suda makes. Favorite character design is anything MegaTen.

Wasn't Wing Commander III just the same as the other WC games but with FMV cutscenes? I have no problem with that.

As far as games utilizing FMV as the main draw or main gameplay element, oh hell no. It's bad enough that I have to wade through them to find decent Sega CD games, I don't want to do it again on a whole new crop of systems.

Depends on how you want to define an FMV game. The two types usually get clumped together. Judging from the OP's post, it seems like he is focused more on the video aspect of using FMV than the gameplay.

i just want more zombie games with actual zombies in them and a 28 days/weeks later game where your ability to run is set by the amount of stamina you have. and should you be infected you have unlimited stamina.and the ability to spit blood at people at will.

You know what games actually had pretty decent FMVs? The Strike games (Soviet and Nuclear) on the PlayStation. I was so damn disappointed when Future Strike became Future Cop LAPD.

People still know what 640x480 is. It's called a Nintendo Wii. And they never died out. Japan has em en masse and they're called hentai and dating I believe.
One of my favorite FMV type games was D. Good shit.
You chose bad and you should FEEL BAD. D while it had an interesting story, the game moved so god damn slow. Gabriel Knight The Beast Within is the best FMV game ever made.

I may be the only one, but I have to admit i had fun with games like Mad Dog Mcree and Crime Patrol in the arcades... Also had some fun with Braindead 13, Phantasmagoria, and Psychic Detective (yes, I know the last one is terrible but I liked it for some reason). I would definitely give a new fmv game at least one shot, if for nothing else but the novelty of it.

I feel 100% the opposite. FMV games were a result of a sudden increase in storage space with cd's and confusion over how stories should be told in games. Unfortunately games are still trying to copy movies, but luckily the fmv is something that has largely died.

Nah, they were around well before that; it's just that the CD-ROM format helped popularize them. For example, there's the aforementioned Dragon's Lair, which first came out all the way back in 1983, and there were even VCR games - anyone else remember those?

damn, now I'm trying to remember the name of that light gun game that used videotapes and a TV show.

Wasn't it Captain Power? The one with the ship and the red and blue flashing things on the screen that you would shoot... god I haven't even thought of that in at least 20 years, I used to love it

that's it. I knew it had Power somewhere in the title but couldn't remember the rest. That thing was hot shit when it was released......only to have I want to say 5 episodes run before it was canceled.

There was some FMV game I remember playing wherre you're trying to hunt down a Serial Killer I remember being good. It was called "Angel Devoid" or something like that.
"Braindead 13" I remember being quite good actually. It almost makes one wish it hit the arcade as well. I'll even go so far as to argue it's an underappreciated Bluth FMV game since it never hit the arcade. Remember the hot Salon Chick you screw up and make look like a hag in?
Also I've always wanted to play "Phantasmagoria" as I've heard it's good. Too bad it would never get remade or continued considering the sexual content. Yeah! That's what I want in my M rated game...violence! Sex is so bad, seeing all that red fly across the screen is so much better. Seriously I say have a mature rated game with nudity in it and possibly sex if you need to. When the parents complain ask them why their kid is playing it and then proceed to ask them if they think someone's head being shot off or being shot in the chest is healthier.

Oh wait....

What? Too soon?
Actually, I liked the Sega CD games. I enjoyed Night Trap, Ground Zero Texas, and my favorite, Mad Dog McGee (and of course Tomcat Alley).

I'm convinced these will never come back. Really though, with graphical improvements now, I'm not sure there is a need. The big thing back then was that live action 'looked' real. Now, of course, you can run around in the ruined cities of Gears of War 2 (or countless other games) and get lost feeling the realism.

So, though I would enjoy it, I don't see it ever happening.

I liked Dragon's Lair, Time Gal, and Triad Stone/Strahl in their time. They're annoying to play now, but I enjoyed the animation. Never tried Space Ace or DL2, and I'm sure I wouldn't like them now. I picked up the DVD version of Time Traveler and was really disappointed in that.
I kinda have a soft spot for rebel assault games. They were made back during a time there was no new starwars and the idea that there would be more startwars movies were just the dreams of fanboys.

That has from watching it still held up pretty well over time. I loved that game when it first came out.

I wouldnt mind a game in that style coming out today in the star wars universe.

You might be thinking of Captain Power (as mentioned above) since that went with a kids cartoon, but there was also Action Max. That had 5 different video tapes released for it with the hardest-to-find being the Blue Thunder movie/game which apprarently used actual movie footage. (I have the tape sealed, so never saw it or played it.)

Like a lot of older gamers, I have a soft spot for these games, even the worst of them. They were simply just a massive leap from what we knew. I mean, you go from hopping around some 2D space and jumping on the heads of monsters...and suddenly you're tracking the trail of a serial killer through realistic-looking environments and having Christopher Walken threatening you.

The most recent FMV game I played was Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, which is basically a FMV version of Phoenix Wright. A lot of FMV type of games are just point and click type of games that gears closely towards cinematic experience then actual game play itself. I think these type of games suite really well with Nintendo Ds with a touch screen experience. Too bad the video and sound quality will suffer if that happens.

Indeed. It's easy for us to look back and laugh at the vast majority of them now. Hell, even the best of them are pretty funny to check out now. But yeah, at the time, it was like a revolution.

Yeah, but you were still laughing at the bad acting in them even as you were marvelling at the realistic graphics!

:bomb: Damn you kids with your HDtv and your surround sound. My old Victrola is the only stereo I'll ever need and my small black and white tv is the only one I'll ever play anything on.

I was quite annoyed with their changing the series into Future Cop as well. Although it was fun to change the mech into a ship and back again, but that was where the fun ended.

I totally forgot I made this thread....

Oh also, about the 640x480 comment, in my mind, I was thinking about computer monitor resolutions. I actually never had a Sega CD so my memories of FMV games aren't from that, but PC games.
