I started playing Shadowrun Returns recently, and I'm digging it so far.  The universe is really interesting, so I'm glad there's a level editor for people to make their own campaigns.  I'm very curious to see what people can do within the universe.

Anyone else play it?

I started a game as a rigger a while back, maybe I'll pick it back up.

Picked up Etrian Odyssey IV again over the weekend and since then, I've finished mapping most of the 6th labyrinth (including the entire third floor) and beat
the thunder and blizzard dragons.

There's still a small number of FOEs I haven't taken on yet, and I wasn't able to beat either
the final dragon or the 6th stratum boss (though I got past its first form).
The latter two aren't gonna get beaten without a whole lot more grinding, which doesn't sound all that appealing, so I think I'm gonna set the game aside again.

Also have to figure out what RPG I'm going to start up next. I really have no idea what that's gonna be right now.

I've been waiting for patches and the Berlin campaign.

Also, I have a copy of Wasteland 1 now?

Eight badge acquired.  Yes, I'm slow at games.  :p

On to Victory Road and the Elite 4+.

Post game I plan to catch Mewtwo and Zygarde as well as get the rest of the Mega Evolvers.  That's about it.

I think this plan will get backburnered once the PS4 arrives doe.  :p

I had it back on 5 and 1/4 floppy disks. Didn't it also come with a little text/code book where you had to read paragraphs of journal entries in a physical book when they were referenced in-game?

That sounds like A Thing That Would Be Done. "Quote this part of the manual" was a very popular anti-piracy technique. My favourite old-timey bit of copy protection was definitely the cipher wheel, though.

alright, no. not doing this. the original Final Fantasy is just...unplayable
I beg to differ. Then again, we have very different tastes.

As a kid, I always kept trying to play it and beat it on a rental; that was futile.

I'd always make it to the Earth cave and then get wrecked by some of the monsters in there and didn't really like the idea of grinding at the time to get powerful enough to do it, especially because it was a rental due back in the next few days.

Then my Uncle came upon the game and started playing it and I had the Nintendo Power guide for it... which lead to me riding shotgun and providing navigational tips to him as he played through the game. Those couple weeks are probably some of my fondest memories of time spent with that Uncle... and it definitely was the starting point of my liking Final Fantasy games.

The cipher wheels for the old AD&D Gold box games were the worst. Especially trying to figure out similar looking runes on an Apple II with poor resolution.

also hecka random but I wanna say,

I'm really glad that the new PS4 and xbone consoles are coming out now,

becoz to me it means the console space is going to be filled with a lot of real shitty to average games for the next year at least lol.

it seems a lot of gamers are really into that stuff,

but me personally I am most excited about not giving a fukk til 2015 when an actual good game comes out.

gives me plenty of time to work thru my backlog!! much of which consists of RPGs lol
Amen to this. I'm finally almost done with my backlog, and I owe it all to the release slowdown that comes with the new consoles.

On the RPG topic, Ys Seven was gooooood. It's a shame I waited this long to play it - Celceta is really similar-looking, so I don't want to burn out on Ys by playing it too soon.

I'm in full agreement with you guys.  I have no real interest in playing any of the exclusives coming out on PS4 immediately, I just built a gaming PC so I have anything released as PC/Xbox/PS4 covered mostly.

Hopefully this will get me to focus on my backlog without adding too much to it. :)

I thought this was the RPG thread, not the rain on others' parade thread?  :p

I'm pretty excited for Tales on PS4.  Seems like Japan devs are in for PS4 so we're going to see some good stuff for next gen.

Uncharted and a new Tales for PS4, now I got to get this thing.

I'm in (KH3 + FF15 too)! But aren't we talking 2015 or later? I don't need to be in right this moment. :)

Tales of Symphonia HD and Tales of Xillia 2 should keep me still playing PS3 next year. Among other things like The Witch and the Hundred Knights, FFX HD, KH2.5 HD, Lightning Returns (?), Dark Souls 2, and probably lots more if I added cross-gen titles.

Does anyone here have any opinions om Vagrant Story? I currently have a like new copy of it sitting in my Amazon cart and I was wondering what everyone here thought of it

I really liked the game back when I played it on the PS1, and it looked super awesome for its time. I think some people complain about the game's difficulty, but I didn't really have much trouble, just make sure you make and upgrade 2-3 weapons with varying types so you can swap if a boss is super resistant against your weapon type. I've actually been meaning to play it and Chrono Cross again at some point, but lately I've been focused on games I have in my backlog that I haven't finished yet.

The opening dungeon is a bit grimy but it's a great game. Not long either, maybe 12 hours. Somewhat complicated weapon customization, combat is like a muscle memory QTE sort of thing (honestly takes getting used to if you play on an HD tv with delay), good story with very nicely styled in-game cutscenes (I think they outclass MGS's). It's also only 5.99 on the PS store if that's an option for you.

I actually just ended up getting a like new copy of it for $14 on Amazon Warehouse Deals (I like owning my Squaresoft games physically for some reason). I'll probably start playing it once it arrives and hope that I end up completing it before the 26th (since Ys is finally coming out)

Started the PC version of ClaDun x2 yesterday. Never played the first one, but my impressions so far are that it's an action RPG dungeon crawler with a lot of the usual Nippon Ichi trappings: complexity, grindiness, sense of humor, etc. Having a good time with it so far, though I wish that my 360 controller was more compatible with it (for starters, I can't use the d-pad. At all).

Wait, what?! Physical copies can be had for that cheap now?

Amazon currently has some like new copies for only $14.20 right now, I would try to snag one if I were you. I've never seen them this cheap before and the trade value is actually higher than what they are selling it for

Hah, wow, you aren't kidding.

Honestly, I don't know if I'll get one now or just grab it on PSN later. I've been buying a lot lately as it is :whistle2:?

It's Vita compatible, I believe.

Seems like an ideal place to play it... I've thought about it, since it's only $5.99, but I couldn't get a good feel for the game based on some Let's Play stuff I looked up back when.

To piggyback off of the Vagrant Story discussion...

Is there an overworld? Or any cities that you can explore? The game has always interested me, but if it's nonstop dungeon crawling, I'm not sure I have the patience for that.

A few hours into X-2,  don't think I can defend this game much. Feels low budget, has framerate issues, lazy cutscenes, and it's 10x cornier than FFX which has to be some kind of record. The game's entire appeal really is those damn dress spheres, and to their credit, they're pretty awesome. I'm beginning to skip the less important cutscenes so I can just grind out some fun. Think I'll put it down for later.

Instead I'll be resuming XII, where I'm currently at one of my favorite parts with the Jahara and Fran's side arc with her people. All of this game's dialogue is superb, and the graphics are fucking ageless. Got Balthier w/gun, Penelo w/broadaxe, and Ashe w/sword&shield. Larsa tossing hi-potions kind of breaks the game though, lol.

There isn't any overworld, the entire game save the first tutorial mission take place inside of a sealed and deserted city called Leá Monde. There are other groups inside the city that you interact with, and there is a decent amount of story that moves the game along. But outside of those story sequences and upgrading your equipment the game is basically pure dungeon crawling.

What's a Penelo?
The best character in FF12?

About to tackle the final Earth mission for Mass Effect 3. Which, somehow, miraculously has survived during all these weeks (?) months (?) where Shepard has been out roaming the galaxy. Sure, the Asari home world "the most technologically advanced race" gets destroyed in a matter of hours. But Earth? Nope, still standing.

Love the VI/Shepard dialogue "It has been moved to the Sol System." Shepard: "Earth".  VI: Correct.

Just for those people at home who didn't know where Sol was.

There were characters in FF12 other than Fran?

They recycle so much damn content from X that it just comes off as really lazy(a example of this is Lulu who apparently is 9 months pregnant is able to hide her bump with her corset)

Other than the really bad dialogue and all the shitty minigames that Square felt the need to throw in,the soundtrack itself was really bad Also the whole task of getting 100% is near impossible without a guide, and the game includes one of the most broken items in a rpg in catnip which is pretty easy to get too.

This is technically correct.

Well, the way he worded it, it merely says that XII is better than X and X-2. I'm not sure about X-2, but I can agree with him that XII is better than X.
Obviously, personal tastes and all that junk..

But for me, VI and IX are prime examples of what FF should be.

I felt that X was a disappointment, but that's only in comparison to IX. On its own, it's an okay RPG. Couldn't stomach X-2, but I'm willing to give it another shot when it comes to the Vita.

I enjoyed X up until the big plot twist which I thought was just really stupid and convoluted, wasn't a fan of the romance since Tidus was annoying as all hell, and Yuna was just a dull character.
