IGN reviews GTA 4. My God.
Just commenting that it won't be as some of those ridiculous links you posted.
Okay then, I'll take your word on it over information from official Microsoft media events.

Keep in mind, you have to pay for that extra content. By the time that DLC comes out, I'll likely be done with GTA or focusing on the multiplayer.
5 lines of dialogue for each turn.

5 lines of dialogue plus a game save just to organize pokemon.
You're complaining about this when we now have RPG's that have hours of cutscenes and half of the damn games are dialogue?

Unsortable items/pokemon lists.

The idea was amazing, the implementation was not a 10.

Like I said, this is a matter of opinion, I happen to think Pokemon was fun at the time, but is boring and unforgivably clumsy now.

Clumsy to this day? Whatever problems may have been there are fixed now and the formula is still one of the best in an RPG to this day.

Either way, this is not the thread place for this argument, and if you would like to continue this debate, my pm box is open.

Back OT, can't say I'm not surprised by the review score. But, in all fairness I've never seen the motivation to continue to make/play these games, they're just the same game over again with a new color coded filter thrown on. But alas, the same can be said about many game series *sigh*
I'm not implying that IGN gave GTA an undeserving 10. However, it seems fairly obvious that IGN called up Rockstar and said something to the effect of, "Can we break embargo if we score GTA a 10?" It's been documented previously that this is how the industry works.
Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks this is troubling:
Exclusive Reviews are Ethically Troubling

I have not seen 1 second of in game footage of GTA4.

This will be the first game I will play without seeing any. I am excited! It's going to be entirely a surprise!

you haven't seen a commercial?
you haven't seen a commercial?
The commercials and trailers only show in-engine cinematics and scripted stuff, so far.
you haven't seen a commercial?
I have seen those GTA videos. But I haven't seen anyone actually playing it/gameplay.

I'm hiding. I'm also media shut out for MGS4.

The major news networks are owned by multinational corporations who push their agenda to millions across the nation and you're worried about the ethics of online commercials?

IGN, Gamestop and other non fansites = advertisements posing as reveiws.

We know this game will be good, but other games are the same, they just lack the financial muscle.
Holy crap.

I thought that game was actually sort of a joke because it was pretty bad.

Damn, this thread made me "lol" a lot.
I love RPGs, and didn't like Jade Empire at all. That review boggles the mind.

yeah..thats what the game looks like while you are playing it, too

You're not understanding me.

When I say "what it looks like during gameplay," I'm not talking about the graphics. I'm talking about what the gameplay looks like. As in, how it plays.

Huge difference.

oh my bad....

Ok settle down. Here's a thought: MAYBE THE GAME IS ACTUALLY THAT DAMN GOOD!

Anyone that thinks the whole exclusive review thing does not happen in all other forms of media is delusional.

Okay, so I guess you're just playing for the visuals, then. I'm actually curious about piddly little things like play mechanics, and the like.

Whatever.
More importantly, i hope Play Asia gets their shipment in a timely matter, and I'm playin' this bitch ASAP.
Hey Cheapy, I slacked on the preorder on Play-Asia and it says May 2nd is the estimated ship date. How about you? Then again, I got the PS3 version so the higher demand on play-asia might be why.

Also, I was going to pay the 1400 yen for express mail. Do you get it the day of, or day after release? I have the 29th off but figured it wouldnt have gotten here (Japan) on time. I also live in Bumblefuk Japan.

The irony of being in Japan and having to import all my favorite games because they come out later here or not at all. Oh well. Back the Metal Gear Solid Online IX Theta. Think Ill have my robots give my balls a thorough scrubbing now, too.

I did overnight as well. Ordered on the 4th.

From what I can tell, UPS is picking up Monday morning, so should be here on Tuesday.

I ordered the Asian 360 version. It shows a release date of 4/29 and my order is in "preparing order" status. I use UPS shipping. Unless there is a Customs issue, it usually arrives next-day.

I might have to cancel my order with www.play-asia.com. I just went to the only video game store within thirty minutes of me, conveniently 2 minutes away, and asked the son of a Japanese woman,

"明日グランセフトオート4は買えますか。"

Dude looks at some paper work and says that it goes on sale tomorrow. Then I say,

"本当に?でもインターネットによると、日本に発売の予定が決められない。この店で、明日、そのソフトが買えますか。”

Dude looks at the paper work again and says that they'll be selling the game tomorrow at that very store, the same store surrounded by freakin' rice fields. Then, just to make sure I ask him,

”日本語でかどうか遊べますか。”

The guy tells me it's in English because it's not a Japanese version. Not sure if he said it was an NTSC one or whatever. I hope it's not a censored Australian one, but that wouldn't make sense and I would still want it anyway.

So there you have it. A small store in a town of about 20,000 people, 2 hours away from any city bigger than 500,000 people, and they are importing GTA4 despite never having done that on any game since the PS3 came out here (hence me importing 4 games this past year). I didn't ask if it was a PS3 version, but this being Japan, it wasn't necessary.

So all those people who think this game isn't big here, I think this is an indication that it is in fact popular. I saw my students at the store afterwards, I was so happy I had to tell someone, so I told these 13 year olds how happy I was to buy a game where I can kill and bang hookers. They were seriously jealous and excited.

I can't wait for this game!
* by the way, I don't speak Japanese that well. I'm sure I could have said things better and also not sounded like a retarded stutterer, but I just wanted to convey obstinacy in the face of language difficulties to make sure I wasn't in for a big let down tomorrow walking into the store with my pre-order slip and having to bite my lip to stop the tears. If he spoke English I would have been sure of this months ago. It's fun, though. Wish me luck I don't get screwed over in...15 hours when I go in to grab my copy. :bomb:

Thats pretty amazing. The stores in Akihabara usually don't get import games on the day of their USA release, at least not for the Xbox 360.

It's likely to be the USA PS3 version. I have seen GTA PSP from the USA in my local game shops and I'm pretty sure those were the only import titles in the store.

Reviews are slightly tempting me, but given how much I hated GTA3 I'm still going to hold off. Have a bit of a back log now, maybe when that clears up I'll give it a rental or just try to grab it off Goozex in a few months or something to give it a chance.
Okay, then, that settles it. DLC or no DLC, that blog clearly states that "Rockstar has announced that the 360 version will be the definitive version."

So, there ya go. Straight out of the horse's mouth.
Except that Sam Houser of R* took that back a couple weeks ago. (or less?)
Source?
http://arstechnica.com/journals/thu...-debates-grand-theft-auto-on-the-ps3-xbox-360

R* doesn't make any mentions of which is superior or inferior. Doing so would be foolish at this point.

But like I've been saying, the DLC is a major plus for the 360 version.
I'm not trying to downplay it at all, I just meant it's not some super expansion like the Stories series.
Minus 0.5 for no cheese rounds out to a 9.6 :D
Wubb is always right. :(
I'm not trying to downplay it at all, I just meant it's not some super expansion like the Stories series.
How about we stop debating it, cause we're not Rockstar, and we don't know what the fuck we're talking about.

We'll see exactly how big it is, when it comes out.

My point still stands, though, that I'll trade graphics that are a hair better, for more hours of new gameplay than you can count on both hands.

That you have to pay extra for. It's great that the 360 is getting dlc but since you have to pay extra for it it has nothing to do with the original game. Also, it will be released in the fall when all the big games are coming out so I don't have any need for it. Rockstar isn't going to release anything that is going to piss off PS3 owners.

It is a plus for the 360 version and many people will see it that way, but I have a problem with people acting it's something that crushes the Ps3 version.

And as someone who is a graphic whore at heart, probably won't even finish this game, and don't really like to play online that much.
I'll take the PS3 version.

And I beg to differ. I think it's a huge deal, and yes, I think it means that the 360 version crushes the PS3 version.

And what do you mean, they won't "release anything that is going to piss off PS3 owners"? You seriously don't think that a lot of PS3-only kids are pissed off about it? Because there was sure a huge fucking stink when they announced it. I swear to god, I've never seen the term "money-hat" used so much as I did the week they announced the $50 million DLC deal.
Or you can wait for PS3 to release a special edition of the game with all DLC included a year later ;)
I assume you're being sarcastic, but in case you aren't, I just wanna say that I'm pretty sure that that $50 million dollar contract has provisions to prevent that from ever happening.
I assume you're being sarcastic, but in case you aren't, I just wanna say that I'm pretty sure that that $50 million dollar contract has provisions to prevent that from ever happening.
I was joking and to be honest I didn't know that.

However you have to admit that for many blockbuster games, a special edition is released a year later with more content and a lower price. DMC3, the Metal Gears, SH2, RE4.

How did that last exlcusivity contract signed with the GTA boys work out?
I hate IGN. There is no way, NO way that this game is even nearly as good as Ocarina of Time. And I love GTA.
They are pretty different games...
How did that last exlcusivity contract signed with the GTA boys work out?
Basically, Microsoft paid Rockstar $50 mil (which is probably more than, or at least, equal to GTA4's entire budget) to guarantee that the two DLC episodes remain permanently exclusive to the 360.

That was a crazy amount of money.
The budget was just revealed to be $100 million (most expensive game, new record) so it was half of the whole budget.
Stupid not to take it.

You're shitting me. Dizzamn.

My problem with the score is that the other installments have gotten perfect scores too, and they had some noticeable flaws. What flaws? You know, the ones that Rockstar made a pointed effort to address this time around, like the shooting and driving mechanics and so on. So knowing the previous perfect scores were a little bit BS, how do you look at another perfect score for a game that seemingly made strides in fixing flaw that, according to the gaming press, didn't even exist in the first place? It's a bit of a "Were you lying then, or are you lying now?" situation, as I see it.

I'm sure it's a solid game and all (It's the first one since GTA II I've had any desire to even touch), but the best game in 15 years? I really, sincerely, doubt that.

Comparing scores of older games on previous consoles to current games on current consoles is a pointless endeavor. Stop.
