I might have to cancel my order with
www.play-asia.com. I just went to the only video game store within thirty minutes of me, conveniently 2 minutes away, and asked the son of a Japanese woman,
"明日グランセフトオート4は買えますか。"
Dude looks at some paper work and says that it goes on sale tomorrow. Then I say,
"本当に?でもインターネットによると、日本に発売の予定が決められない。この店で、明日、そのソフトが買えますか。”
Dude looks at the paper work again and says that they'll be selling the game tomorrow at that very store, the same store surrounded by freakin' rice fields. Then, just to make sure I ask him,
”日本語でかどうか遊べますか。”
The guy tells me it's in English because it's not a Japanese version. Not sure if he said it was an NTSC one or whatever. I hope it's not a censored Australian one, but that wouldn't make sense and I would still want it anyway.
So there you have it. A small store in a town of about 20,000 people, 2 hours away from any city bigger than 500,000 people, and they are importing GTA4 despite never having done that on any game since the PS3 came out here (hence me importing 4 games this past year). I didn't ask if it was a PS3 version, but this being Japan, it wasn't necessary.
So all those people who think this game isn't big here, I think this is an indication that it is in fact popular. I saw my students at the store afterwards, I was so happy I had to tell someone, so I told these 13 year olds how happy I was to buy a game where I can kill and bang hookers. They were seriously jealous and excited.
I can't wait for this game!
* by the way, I don't speak Japanese that well. I'm sure I could have said things better and also not sounded like a retarded stutterer, but I just wanted to convey obstinacy in the face of language difficulties to make sure I wasn't in for a big let down tomorrow walking into the store with my pre-order slip and having to bite my lip to stop the tears. If he spoke English I would have been sure of this months ago. It's fun, though. Wish me luck I don't get screwed over in...15 hours when I go in to grab my copy.
