Hey fellas, I just thought I'd stop by and say that I've made it here okay. I'm through almost two weeks already, and it doesn't seem like that long at all.
It really sucks over here, but us Air Force guys don't have it near as bad as the Army does. We have to be here four months compared to the Army's one year deployments.
In a lot of ways, I imagine it almost like being in prison. Well, since I've never been in prison, I wouldn't know, but it does suck here. I work about 12 hours a day and barely can stay awake long enough to watch a DVD when I get back to the tent.
The place itself is pretty trashy. No one really seems to care if there's trash anywhere, but I guess I can understand why.
It's not nearly as dangerous here as I thought going into it. You hear a few explosions every so often, but nothing seems to get too close. All the crazy stuff is happening outside of the camp.
It's really, really sad to hear about all the people dying everyday. Everyday we have a Marine, Soldier or Airman getting killed. Just yesterday, we had the first female die in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom. That was kinda freaky.
What really upsets me, though, is hearing about the insurgents killing their own people. I can't go too much into it, but they are heartless cowards.
Everytime we try to confront them and fight, they usually just run away.
Well anyway, I'm here and safe and am trying to have a good a time as I can.
I guess the one bright spot here is there's these shops run by local Iraqis. They sell pirated DVDs for about $3 a piece. I bought one DVD that had Stealth, Mr. and Ms. Jane, Fantastic Four, Batman Begins and War of the Worlds on it. Not too bad for $3.
