The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

I can't find it on their site. I guess I'm going to have to drive and see if I find it. Thank you!
I'd honestly love to get a photo of the game (and clear photo of the back too) if you or anyone find a copy. Have been meaning to get it in the RFgeneration database.

By the way, got two copies of the Ducati game from Gamestop Italy (it is ONLY available there, but they don't ship to U.S. - so you need to get someone in Italy to ship it over). This game may get a Spanish release next year, but decided to get them while I could...

I NEED that Ducati game.
I'd recommend holding off until the supposed Spain releases happens next Spring (https://www.amazon.es/BANDAI-NAMCO-Entertainment-Iberica-Ducati/dp/B01M4OWTUJ/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1480543075&sr=1-1&keywords=ducati). Looks like you can pre-order and they'll ship it to the States. Or you can trawl ebay.it for a user who will ship to the U.S. - I didn't have luck with that but I'm sure someone will pop up...

At that point, the Italian version will simply be a variant. It does apparently come with a card inside that says "Gamestop exclusivo". I haven't opened mine to see...

It's also for Xbox One as well. Might go down as a pretty rare release for a console that doesn't have many.

Thank you for the info! I put in a pre-order for the Spain release. Hopefully, it will actually come out but in the meantime I will keep my eye on ebay as well.

I saw Geometry Wars PS4 at a local Best Buy today, in a bargain bin with a bunch of other 19.99 games. Didn't think that BB even carried this game, I've only seen it at GS.

I'd vouch for Monster Jam: Crush It and Big Buck Hunter Arcade being included on this list as well, at least for now. It seems Wal-Mart is the only store selling these in the U.S. (Best Buy in Canada apparently has copies of Monster Jam selling online, with very limited stock in stores)
Monster Jam: Crush It is now up on Bestbuy.com with a 01/17/17 release date. Perhaps Walmart just got it early?

Kinda strange, I've seen that Geometry Wars game randomly in a couple different retailers (So I know it isn't exclusive) but when you go on Amazon there is no sign of the physical version. Really weird.

I got it new off ebay for 41 dollars shipped. I saved a couple dollars in taxes and I didnt have to feed the god damned lamestop beast at the same time. So its a win win.
Gamestop had KF2 for 29.99 during BF week, picked up my copy a few days before Black Friday. I don't mind dealing with them if the game is new/sealed and the price is OK.

Oddly, Walmart touted both Monster Jam and Big Buck as "Only at Walmart" in the Black Friday ad. Maybe they only had a very short exclusivity window.

Funny thing is Monster Jam is available from Best Buy in Canada and has been since the release date (I saw it there on a trip to Vancouver last month). Who knows with these odd distributions. Obviously they probably considered the casual crowd who would be in the market for Monster Jam or Buck Hunter would shop at Wal-mart....

Geometry Wars is another strange one, kinda floating all over the place. I'll float a couple more out there while we are on this: Pure Hold'Em and King's Quest Complete Collection. Both got physical releases, Pure Hold'em was likely ever only available at Wal-mart. King's Quest has a more wider distribution (Target, Toys R Us and Gamestop - at least), but I actually haven't seen it in a store yet (I ordered mine online).

Yep, Pure Hold'em snuck out a while back through Walmart.com (although it's still in their preorder section for some odd reason despite being available for shipping) after being listed for most of last year for preorder through Toys R Us along with Surgeon Simulator(which never was released as far as I can tell), but I haven't seen it in store. I actually bought my copy from Pop N Games on Ebay a while back as Walmart has raised the minimum threshold for free shipping. I've seen King's Quest in-store at several Target locations as well as a couple of Gamestops.

I wonder if it will get a standard UK release like all of their other games.
If not, this would be a first for them. I found an article from this summer saying that their would be a retail release of this game in Q4 2016, but this is the first time I've seen it.

Hmm...did they ever do a Developer Signature Edition of Super Meat Boy? Or was it just the standard release only?
Standard only. Pretty disappointed with the fact that the other two PS4 "signature" editions aren't really hand signed, but just printed on the outer box/sleeve

Some more info on Natsume's physical release plans for Wild Guns: Reloaded. Game is definitely coming out soon (looks like Dec. 20)

http://natsume.com/community/showthread.php?p=160303#post160303
According to this post, the game plus Limited Edition bonus goodie (whatever that is) will go live on Amazon on its release date. Other than that only Play Asia and VGP are taking preorders (with possibly more retailers to come though I wouldn't count on it).

So I did find Professional Farmer 2017 at a Wal-Mart in the Phoenix area this weekend. I was visiting the area on a quick trip and had NO LUCK at any Wal-Mart in Oregon past couple weeks. They only had three copies. It is really weird that there is absolutely no information about this release online (not even walmart.com or UIG). Have a feeling that if they just did a limited print run to get a few holiday sales with people confusing it for Farming Simulator, then this could certainly end up being pretty obscure (esp. since it isn't exactly the type of title collectors seek out). Put up the info for the release at RF Generation (http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-215-S-03760-A&)

The recently released PSN title, Silence, got a German-exclusive physical release. I know my preorder shipped from Amazon.de today.

I haven't received a shipping confirmation either.

I guess the cover was supposed to have some type of foil based on the image. I swear iam8bit really did not manage this well at all.

I'm still waiting for a shipping confirmation from iam8bit. I would have never typically ordered this from them, especially considering the feedback they've gotten on it, but I'm trying to at least obtain a copy of every limited PS4 release as they come out. I just wonder if they mark the order shipped on their website and/or send you an email, or does the copy just arrive out of the blue?

BOUGHT!

Are there anyother games like this on vita or ps4 which are actual old school games? I mean I like a lot of newer games aimed at being like an old school game, but they are never quite the same.

I didnt know anyone did stuff like this really.
Slain: Back from Hell is an old-school style side-scroller. It'll have a physical (EU-only I believe) copy soon. Plenty of PSN titles out there done in this style.

Well like I said I want games like that wild guns, actual releases of old games on vita or ps4. I like "new old school games" well enough but they arent the same as ones I played as a kid,

And I should have clarified, I want physical north american releases.

Then you're out of luck, this is the only one so far.

Cool.

I don't want to give lamestop even a penny so I'll just get it off ebay like I do all their exclusives. I always end up saving money as well since I find them all at least at msrp with free shipping and no tax. Got killing floor 2 on ps4 off ebay for 40 bucks shipped yesterday.

You could have bought it for $30 the week before and after Black Friday at Gamestop. No sense paying a middle man markup.

Heads up on German releases. You can also preorder Industry Giant II and Kyurinaga's Revenge on Amazon.de as well, scheduled to ship on 12/9. Kyurinaga should have a bigger EU release but comes out in Germany first. I think Industry Giant II will be physically exclusive to Germany. So will Bridge Constructor (out in January).
Oh my god. Yasai Ninja got a sequel!? And another physical release!? Whaaat!?

I'm guessing that these games won't be in English, since they're Germany?

They should be in English. Perhaps Industry Giant II will have a German language mode (since the cover is in German), but I've ordered a bunch of German games in the past and they are all in English.

Huh... that's interesting. I'll have to look into them when I get a chance. There might be more games on there that are exclusive to Germany. Is there anyway to be completely sure they're in English?

Hmm...not 100% sure. I usually just check the PSN store's listing and assume that that is the same languages included with the physical release. Truth be told, I've never seen a game in Germany only released in the German language outside of those exclusive to German audiences (like Schlag den Raab for PS3, based on a German TV show) or maybe those ski jumping games that came out there for PS2. Kyurinaga's Revenge has only English and Spanish language options, it just so happens the physical copy seems to be releasing in Germany first. I think you'd be safe to order the German copy if you wanted to.

Only NTSC/PAL game for PS4 I know that is definitely not in English is Atrapa la Bandera, released only in Spain. Tadeo Jones y el Manuscrito Perdido was also only released in Spain but (amazingly) is entirely in English.

Yeah I already pre-ordered 2 PS4 copies. One to open and another to keep sealed next to my LRG collection. I'm tempted to pre-order an Xbox One version just to keep it sealed as well.
