The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Damn missed on gravity rush remastered. Hopefully amazon restocks more or something. Heard the game will be free next month for plus members. Maybe then prices on eBay will fall.

I'm not sure that the logic behind this makes any sense at all...

Wow, didn't know that Gravity Rush went up that much. Had a feeling that it would be kinda rare but i didn't think this fast. I remember it being $30 like last month.

Wow, why is this going for so much? Got it for $20 on Amazon a few months ago.
Amazon had some earlier today, but I think it may have been found stock, as it didn't last long. So I'm not sure if it was a real restock or not. Some missed out, and I saw this seller on Ebay offering a decent price, but after selling a lot of copies, the price was raised, so I'm not sure what happened there specifically.

But for the cost, this was an Amazon exclusive, or so I've read, as I don't follow PS4 much(as I don't have one), and I guess it sold out awhile ago, and since part 2 was just released, interest has jumped up for it.

Earthlock: Festival of Magic (PS4) - $29.99 (out 2/14/17)

This is supposed to be a highly reviewed RPG that was originally released digitally on the XBox One.

Battlechasers: Night War - $29.99 (unknown release date)

Don't really know much about this game.  Looks like some kind of sim where you are the Police Chief.

Micro Machines: World Series - $29.99 (to be released 4/21/17)

PS4: https://www.amazon.com/Micro-Machines-World-PlayStation-4/dp/B01MR86WZW/ref=sr_1_188_twi_gam_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1485771649&sr=1-188&th=1

Looks like a card based fantasy/strategy game?

without a doubt it's smart to reserve a copy of umvc3 (especially at $30!) cause this will be a gem guaranteed.

unlike its' ps3 ver., this ps4 ver. comes with all the dlc on disc. not to mention there are exclusive characters to umvc3 which i'm sure you won't find in the next marvel vs capcom infinite.
100% agree. I have this preordered on ps4

In regards to more obscure releases, here is one that appears to be disappearing from retailers: Zombie Army Trilogy. The physical release was delayed several times (it came out in Europe months before the U.S. release), and for a while it looked like it would never come out as a North American release. It finally did release, but the production quantity appears to be fairly small.

* Best Buy, Toys R Us, and Newegg never carried the game
* Amazon and GS sold out of their new copies
* The price has remained fairly high for this game

Amazon 3rd party has the XB1 version (fulfilled by Amazon) for about $24 shipped (great price), but the PS4 version is over $30 from 3rd party there. GS still charges $30 used fir either platform.

I played this for a while last night, and enjoyed it. I generally like a more arcade like FPS like this, Killing Floor 2, and Dead Effect 2, so this is well worth it to me.

If Battlechasers Nightwar comes out this year I'm inclined to crap my pants and sit in it. Nothing Joe Mad is involved with ever gets done in a timely fashion...or at all.

Walmart also carried it. I bought it for $19.96+tax back in 2015 from them.

Glad I grabbed a copy from Gamefly last month for $18.

You post actually just reminded me I saw Zombie Army Trilogy in the Walmart clearance bin this past weekend for $7. Think I may may need to head back there and pick it up lol.

I finally got my copy of Professional Farmer 2017 PS4 NA region. I couldn't find it on my local Wal-Mart so I had to get it from eBay.

Are you talking about the steelbook? That was the initial release; not ultimate. Will the PS4 version have more dlc on disc than Ultimate for Vita/PS3?

I'm guessing (hoping) the PS4 version includes the DLC costumes that were not included in Ultimate on PS3. Frank West's Megaman outfit, Ryu's SF1 outfit, etc

Not sure why, I get that with every order... but never had any actual trouble with an order.

Yeah I just started getting that too. Not every order, but most.

It looks like it's getting a wider release soon: http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-3-professional+farmer+2017,28zu0

Noticed Abzu (PS4) at a Target brick and mortar location yesterday.  Amazon still has the extra 20% off though.  Really wish Best Buy would have sold it as I prefer to buy from them for obvious reasons

Not sure if this qualifies as a smaller/obscure/limited release, but Stardew Valley is getting a physical edition in early 2017, and not by Limited Run Games: http://gematsu.com/2017/02/stardew-valley-ps4-xbox-one-retail-release-due-early-2017

Anyone find a price for the Stardew Valley retail release? I tried to look on Twitter but everyone was just begging for a Switch version, I didn't see anyone ask about price.

Stardew Valley Collector's Edition is coming to retail stores nationwide on April 11, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One! In addition to the full game, the Collector's Edition includes a Pelican Town Map, Mini-Guidebook by Kari Fry, and a code to download the Stardew Valley Soundtrack! SRP $29.99

I'm definitely preordering that with the Prime discount.

Day 1, so happy to see it getting a physical release.

Vinny, that's their automated fraud protection kicking in. Either due to too many orders placed in a period of time, the dollar amount of the order or some other logic that's lost on me. They tried to explain it to me, though it was basically an automated system that was running in the background. As long as it doesn't seen an issue with real fraud, you shouldn't have an issue with it.

Thanks for the clarification... I initially thought it was b/c I kept ordering the same used games over and over in hopes of a complete copy (returned to store if disc only, until I got a complete copy) but there's no logic to them. I'm now convinced it's for them so that they can verify store inventory since they're shipping from stores.

I tried that and they stopped me after ordering 2. Were you able to order more after returning them? It won't let me place it and just tells me to call customer service if i try to get more.

Seems like their system has a hard time tracking their stock of certain items and blocks you. That's why I don't even bother trying to get DS stuff cheap anymore I usually end up with a full cart only to get blocked at check out :p. You can play around with whats in your cart to find the product that's causing it but it's a pain in the butt since the issue only pops up during the final step meaning it's a complete guessing game unless you want to deal with canceling orders later. Customer Support may be able to check if any games in your cart are really out of stock, but I've never bothered calling them since I figure they would just push the order through resulting in later item cancellations or orders staying open forever since they probably don't have any copies left.

I doubt they would go through the effort of blocking certain items that you keep ordering they would probably just get tired of you and ban you outright for "return fraud" or something if they saw you as an issue.
