The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

How's the latency from pc to steam link?
It is not bad at all. But I have a 25-30 foot distance with nearly line-of-sight to the router. I'm sure it doesn't work great through thick walls.

I was playing Portal 2 with no issues earlier. But haven't really tried many graphically intensive games yet. The resolution so far is fantastic though. Text and everything is showing up with full HD clarity. The interface is also very nice. Will probably finally play through my PC version of Trials in the Sky now that I can couch it. :bouncy:

Pinball FX3 looks fantastic. You can detect a minimal amount of lag at times, but it didn't hinder my gameplay.

It also streams -anything- your desktop is doing straight to the television while it's on; it's not just for games.

Damn, too bad Wii U games are region locked. I have this digitally but would’ve gladly rebought it physical. Europe always gets more physical releases than we do. Examples off the top of my head- Slain: Back from Hell PS4/Vita, Teslagrad PS Vita, Minecraft PS Vita, Super Meat Boy PS4, Deadlight: Director’s Cut PS4/XB1, etc etc.

EAS tweeted a little bit ago that Soldner X is down to the last 50 units. Had to bite. I’ve bought and played that game a couple times now for various platforms and in traditional shmup fashion it’s hard as hell. Still fun though.

Don’t forget to use that ndeal coupon if you do pick it up. Just under $27 shipped isn’t bad at all.

Yes of course, can't forget that Switch Tax. This is annoying for other reasons as well. Is releasing a game on multiple platforms gradually becoming a new thing now? So that we'd buy it on the PS4, on the Switch, on the Xbox, etc?

A new thing? Ports on various consoles goes back to the earliest days of video games. Where have you been for the past 40 years?

I meant staggering releases across different platforms. Like, I bought the PS4 version of Unbox and now oh hey there's a Switch version! ...which I would have preferred to get instead. Retro City Rampage is definitely the worst offender with this practice.

At one point in time, multi platform releases always happened at the same time. As companies figured if one game released early, it would sell better than the ones released later. And when you did offer the games latter elsewhere, they often offered more features, stages, etc, as an incentive to buy later(or again).

The same still holds true, but now if a game doesn't have extra DLC or whatnot, we really don't get any bonus features for the wait. And often, you get to pay more, as other releases are now cheaper, due to having been out longer. These for sure cater to a more "collector" type market, which is "insane" by nature. So publishers can get away with pretty much anything now, so long as it appears collectible to someone.

While Brian, who created RCR as you stated is most guilty, he's the one place I can give a pass to. As he was pretty much a one man team, so his releases didn't get multi-platform due to him being the only one making the games(a few digital did, but all the physical got scattered releases). But he always offered the latest versions, when it was possible.

And when you have a 3rd system like the NS that was released late, or of a different architecture to the other systems, you will always have that systems games come late. As production started later, or more time is needed to downsize the game from the other system versions.

This is why I'm hesitant with LRG PS4 releases. What if they publish the same game for switch down the line. I don't want to double dip on just about ANY game and I would prefer Switch 7/10.

Again, not new. In the earliest days of home video games, ports would appear multiple consoles sometimes years after the fact. The Wii and WiiU received numerous ports months or even years after the release on Xbox 360 and PS3.

The most annoying thing about the "Switch tax" to me is that often times these are much older games that are being priced higher than their PS4/XB1 counterparts. For example Rime is pretty much $19.99 everywhere now physically yet the soon to be released Switch version is stubbornly set at $39.99. You would think they would lower this older game price to $29.99 since it will still be $10 more than everyone else, but...nope.

Then there are some Switch publishers that don't charge $10 more - like NISA with the latest Touhou game - but they are few and far between.

Double/triple/quadruple/etc dip is their middle name. It's inevitable at some point if you have more than one platform.

We're trying to focus the Switch lineup on platform exclusives where possible, and we'll announce a Switch version is coming for any multi-platform releases.

I've mentioned it before, but Switch is kind of a chance to hit the reset button and start off with the less games, bigger titles approach we're currently following when signing. We're trying to only do one Switch game a month at the start, and we're pushing for a higher level of renown in those releases because with a lower frequency we need bigger games that can sustain larger run sizes.

As much as I'd love to do it to make cs-baker's head explode, don't just assume we're doing a Switch version of past games we've released or that a Switch version is coming because we announced a PS4/Vita version. Forma.8 is a good example of an upcoming game that is on Switch, PS4, and Vita - but we're still only releasing it on PS4/Vita. We don't have the capacity in our Switch lineup right now since we're really trying to be slow and steady here.

Right now, on the Switch front, we've got one game that is PS4 and Switch, and two games that are Switch exclusive. We're in talks for one more Switch exclusive. That's really it right now. Just to be specific - no Wonder Boy from us (go buy it from Play-Asia).

If I was as greedy and money-hungry as cs-baker likes to push, I'd be signing all the Curve games and locking down every bit of content from our past partners. We're taking a different approach on Switch.

That made me laugh a bit, I'll give you credit where it's due.

Smart moves, Doomstink.   I like the "less games, bigger titles" philosophy.  Glad to see you've still got your head screwed on straight!
but do please try to make cz-baker's head explode

I personally never had an issue with the games you guys have offered, as I'm just about getting digital games made over to physical.

That being said, I completely understand wanting quality over qty, as LRG gets a bad wrap from a certain group, who just because they don't think a game isn't worth their time, that no one else wants the game either. Which is really "retarded" to say the least. So long as you guys liked the titles, and think they where worth offering, then that is all that should have mattered.

Of course, if NS titles will need to be produced at higher numbers, of course a more selective process is needed. But I hate to think some great smaller indie titles could miss out on physical offerings, just to keep a small group from complaining and making a stink.

I have another one of these if you're interested. I feel like a scrub posting but I don't monetize so I don't gain anything from it. I just thought maybe someone would like to see!

Alright so maybe I just hadn't noticed since I didn't own any of those consoles that generation (only owned a DS/3DS). So it seems with every release I'm interested in I'll have to do some homework on which version are coming out when.. yay

That isn't the official cover art. They're still working on it. Although I like it as well. Maybe ask them to have it be the reversible cover art?

This seems to be a smart decision based on upcoming competition. Looking forward to how it actually plays out.

I started to appreciate what I saw in a video of Count Lucador, but the basic sprite work is just fugly - like old Atari fugly. The game play and premise seem pretty cool though.

Hey Doomstink, why couldn't we get more than one Housemarque game on the same disc? I would love a copy of Resogun, Nex Machina, and whatever else their "greatest hits" are supposed to be. Pretty sure it'll fit on a single bluray.

As stated multiple times, there is a lot of development work that needs to be done to get multiple games onto a single disc. That new image then has to be submitted for approval by Sony. It’s not worth anyone’s time to do a single disc.

Kondo-san is drawing the cover art for the fans so if you people really like the sketch art he made, we will happily let him know. We want the community to participate in our projects so maybe we will start a poll or go with reversible covers.

Oh and by the way, hello everyone! ^^

Hi Dennis, and welcome, I'm very much looking forward to this release, as well as future ones.

Be careful what you post around here, as you'll go from "Saint" to "Sinner" at the drop of a hat. Very tough crowd around here. LOL
