The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Same. fucking bullshit. They wouldn't give me the 20%. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't have that $5 mystery coupon.

Urgently need someone that bought Cuphead in store to tell me if they got their code actually inside the game case or not. I had nothing in it other than the animation cel.

So either my case was empty for some reason or you're actually supposed to get the download card separately and take it up to the register with the game case. Either way it's a fucking mess.

There is no code in the box. The upc on the back just prompts the register to sell you a digital code and takes a copy of the box sku out of inventory. That's why it doesn't qualify for GCU and why the website doesn't sell it.

Code was printed on the receipt.

I had someone pick it up for me from Best Buy and when they opened it they said there was nothing in there. It didn't strike me that they'd print the thing on the receipt but I'm glad I thought to have them check before I had them drive all the way back.

Also, that's a pretty dumb system, especially if the person at the register doesn't tell the customer.

That is why you don't support releases like this.

Well the whole point of this release is to make holiday shoppers aware that the game exists by having it mixed in with the other boxed titles. A lot of people don't even look twice at those cards for digital only games.

Those same people aren't going to look twice at their receipt, either, and they sure won't have any idea that there is no disc in the case. I think that release is going to be a pain for Best Buy. I did see something in the fine print on the back that stated the code would be on a receipt, but I can't imagine the average person is going to read that before purchasing.

Per email from Square Enix, Lost Sphear (Switch) physical edition will be exclusive to their online store.
Speaking of the SE online store, did they phase out redeeming reward points for $ discounts on future purchases? Can't seem to find that option since the Member/Store account merger. (SE's FAQ is of no help)

It seems like it. Points only seem valid for specific items now.

That is both helpful to know and disappointing. I haven't been to the SE site in a while, is their shipping still pretty expensive?

Thank for the confirmation. Funny, SE stressed that "your points are safe" during the merge, but said nothing of losing ways to use them...or maybe I missed that tidbit as well.

Agreed. I was hoping to use Reward Points to offset the shipping. Will have to think about pulling the trigger...

Well, it sold. So I guess the old statement "A fool and his money are soon parted" is still alive and well in this country. LOL
Until the buyer does a PP buyer protection claim for not receiving a game like they thought they would. Then this guy is out the money and the eBay fees for a net loss.

So Tokyo 42 is going on sale tomorrow at 6pm CET according to Strictly Limited's email which is noon eastern yet their website has a clock counting down to 6pm eastern. Hmm...

I think I get why Cuphead is selling for so much. I got mine today, and only one of the three best buys that are reasonably drivable around me ever got any. It wasn't available online, and had very little advertising, so hardly anyone knew about it. Even without a disc, it's nice to have some representation on the shelf.

The developer said a physical CE is supposed to be coming at some point, so I'm holding out for that.

True, but the Best Buys I have seen it at seem to have received a ton. I know when I bought one earlier this week, there were still 20+ copies on the shelf.

I'm not sure if this has already been posted, but it appears upcoming Switch racer Gear.Club Unlimited will have a physical release that will be available only at Gamestop. The Nintendo website shows it will be available at Amazon, Best Buy, Target, etc... However, I can't find it listed anywhere but Gamestop, and the Gamestop listing and picture of the case specifically say "Only at Gamestop".

It's not like a ton of people are paying those crazy prices. The only sold listings I'm seeing are for $9.99 (w/o code), $35 (with code), $33 (w/o code, opened to show which cell it has), $75 (this is the one from a few pages back, totally crazy), and $65 (2 copies of the code + 1 box and cell).

It's a timed retail exclusive, but I have no idea when it'll be sold through other retailers.

That's what she said.

But really, they're selling what looks like a game, without an actual game inside... so kind of a hollow victory if you do find one. I'm waiting until there is a proper physical version with a disk inside. Give me physical or give me death.

Well, Tokyo 42 was a fairly quick and easy process. I wonder how long it will last?
