The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Not sure if this is worth mentioning but when I picked up the visual novel game Punchline! For ps4.The store clerk told me it was the only copy for 200 miles. Its a fun game with some odd designs based off the anime. I played for an hour looked interesting very niche game.

So I ordered the Switch Yomawari limited edition from Best Buy online and they have it listed at $40.

What do you guys think the chances are that it's actually the limited one and not the standard edition? Retail is supposed to be $40 on the standard and $55 on the limited I believe. Also, the fact that BB doesn't even have a standard edition on the website has me even more concerned that they might have have just grabbed the wrong product details and threw them up on the listing.

Worst case scenario at least it's an easy return

Yeah that was my mentality. Would be super cool if it was the limited though.

Will probably end up keeping it even if standard as I still have GCU for 20% off and I'm unlikely to find it much cheaper judging by the other entries in the series.

Yeah, most likely its the standard edition as BB doesn't even have another listing of the game.  Also, if the LE was available outside of NISA's website surely Amazon and Gamestop would be selling it too.  They are not.

The Gamestop-exclusive Switch title Party Planet is down to $19.99 finally.  Probably a bad game, but figured I would mention it for all the Switch collectors out there:

And it's already sold out. WTH. Seriously. [emoji24]
30 minutes in, not even on Wario64's feed and still sold out, they must not have a lot on hand

There's a way to work around: add Senua to "Save for Later", find that list and you can add it to cart from there.

Good news, despite saying it is out of stock I was able to order it. Click the "save for later" option and then manage your saved items. You can add it to your cart from there and then simply check out like normal.

The listing is wrong. This is what stores are getting for that sku. It is heavier than a cartridge-only release so it must have a decent manual inside.

Best Buy game listing is wrong sometimes so be careful. The listing for the Steelbook Edition of Yakuza Kiwami shows the PS Hits version and the PS Hits version shows the standard blue case. I ordered a copy thinking I would get a blue case copy but only got the PS Hits version. Their Ittle Dew2 shows launch edition which comes with manual and map but I only got the cartridge and game case no manual or map. I returned and just ordered on ebay since they actually show you everything you will get. You can always return the games at a Best Buy but the listing can be wrong. Frustrating but it happens.

All versions of Gundemoniums are selling at a brisk pace. The art card went in less than 2 minutes. Was able to get both versions of the game, a soundtrack, and the aluminum card. I continue to like most everything Strictly Limited Games is putting out. Am super hyped about Gundemoniums.

I think it’s safe to say that LRG has unintentionally ruined the novelty of collecting these niche limited print games through over-saturation.
With this generation as old as it is now, I can get mainline big budeget games (if they are a bit older) like: horizon zero dawn, bloodborne, etc for less money than paying for these limited physical release games that I will never play.

Then on top of that, once I pay $40 a piece to have these on my shelf- I browse the PSN store and see the same game - digital title for $2.

Then! On top of all that- so many of these release that it’s impossible to keep up with, so I become pralized by too many choices, wondering which of these games I should choose and which I should not.

$30-$40 for these types of games 3 years ago was reasonable, now it’s highway robbery.

Gryphon Knight Epic by Strictly Limited Games has been selling for $300 USD on Ebay. Not bad for a game that cost around $30. Bunny Must Die (SLG) has recent sold listings between $70-80. And so on. Obviously some of these games are well worth the money to some gamers. As long as they keep selling out and maintaining their value then it cannot be considered highway robbery. Physical copies are clearly worth paying a premium for to a certain segment of the community. It's where the market is at this point.

These games have always been cheaper, digitally, than physically. This was never about making games available for more practical prices. This is about the hobby of collecting and preservation. If you're just looking to play these games and delete them, then you're definitely not the target demographic. This concept isn't really anything remotely new, either. Titles like Earthbound can be played for nearly free, yet the SNES cartridge still sells for hundreds.

Yes, the market is being stretched... but has it been ruined? Nah. Most of these games range from retaining their retail value all the way to increasing exponentially. Generally, the worst you're going to do if you buy a game and decide you don't want it is to take a small loss, which is fairly equivalent to buying a cheap digital game and deleting it, albeit requiring a bit more work to recoup your money.

Only time will tell if our current generation of consoles retains its collectibility, but I personally think that, due to publishers like LRG and their imitators, that they have the potential to be the most fun consoles to collect for in the future. There's going to be a lot of rare titles to hunt for... but there is the caveat that most of these titles are going into the hands of people who are already collectors and likely won't end up in places like thrift stores and garage sales. Like I said, only time will tell... but at the very least, it's definitely interesting to contemplate how these limited publishers will affect the market for these consoles in the future.

Damn, I didn't even notice they had that art card, as I would have grabbed one. How much was it? I guess I can try on the next one, if offered, and then see about combining shipping, but I guess that will depend on the price.

They end up being a little over $11. I've gotten a few and they are very nice, especially for the price. They sometimes go very quick, depending on the game since the quantity tends to be set at 200 pieces.

So have all their releases had these so far, I've gotten all their Vita releases, but never noticed these before? If I've missed past ones, I might as well skip this one as well, but it does seem rather cool.

Jeebus, didn't even know they are going for that much. Glad I bought 2 copies. Now if only I remember where I put them..

yep every release has had an aluminum art card
Damn, guess I've been asleep at the wheel then(no surprises there really), oh well, funds saved then. Those are for sure something I would have grabbed up, if I had known, as I like little unique stuff like that.
