BlindType appears to be pretty amazing. I presume you need to know the QWERTY keyboard, most likely meaning you can touch type, but if you do, and if this really works this well, then I hope we get this on the iPhone soon. Of course, I presume Apple would have to buy the tech in order to incorporate it system wide:

It was saying that for a few hours (and I use my phone for work...so...). I had tried all of their recommended fixes, but it just didn't want to come back. They overnighted the new one, and so far so good. (I got them to waive the shipping fee.)

I tried that out and it's pretty stupid. Mostly it just makes bookmarks of sites that you can get to anyway, like Google Maps, YouTube, etc. I think there might be one or two things on there that aren't just bookmarks of websites. I guess it does run them in a separate app, but I'm not really feeling the benefit there. So, cool concept, but I've seen better. The Google Voice app, the name of which is escaping me, is a lot more impressive of a web app, but it still has shortcomings, such as no notification capability since it's not a real app.
 
I have installed the jailbreak on my 4.0.1 iPhone 4, but so far it's not working so well. I mean it hasn't broken anything, but the Cydia "store" is just timing out. Is anyone else seeing this?

Also, how do you see the full description of something in Cydia? I can see the partial description (with "..." cutting it off), but tapping on the item brings up a screen with a bunch of entirely useless information and no description at all. Is this because the thing is just timing out when I try to do anything more?

EDIT: never mind. I left one of them up and eventually the description showed up. I guess they are just overwhelmed and the server is insanely slow.
 
I just got my free bumper and it looks really cool but functionally it sucks. The USB cable doesn't fit in securely anymore (it fits but any movement and it disconnects) and my Sony Headphones don't fit in the jack. I don't know what I'm going to do now...
 
Yeah since I already bought a bumper and my brother paid for it, he got the refund and I just ordered one of the cases that are completely open on the top or bottom because only the official cable would fit and it annoyed the hell out of me. If I dont like it, I'm just going nekked
 
So far I'm not having much luck with jailbreak apps. Everything I've tried either refuses to install, or just doesn't work. AdBlock, for example. I installed it, but ads still showed up. I went into the AdBlock app and found that the status was that it was off. So I turned it on, but still there were ads in Safari. I tried quitting out of Safari via the task bar and launched it again, but still there were ads. I then tried to launch AdBlock again but it just crashed every time then. I removed AdBlock.

This has been the story for everything I've tried so far. Does anything work with 4.0.1?

you have to wait for things to get updated.....i have installed activator, bitesms, sbsettings, cydelete, openssh and fiveicondock so far and they all work fine.

Ok, I fucking hate this jailbreak bullshit. I've now got ads in my Settings application. That is seriously fucked. And absofuckinglutely nothing works! I installed sbsettings and what the hell did it do? There is no sbsetting app. There is no extra settings in the settings app (there is something called Activator, which has settings for things like double-tapping the home button, but none of it works!) Perhaps it just put the fucking ads in there.

Now I have to restore the damn thing to get rid of this crap. What a complete fucking waste of time. Highly unrecommended.

doesn't sbssettings load from the top status bar? At least that how it worked in the past. I believe if you read what you installed it will say that you need to slide your finger from the top of the screen down or across the top status bar and sbssettings will load.
 
Crunchewy - maybe you should know what you are doing before you do it. Default launch for sbsettings is sliding left or right across the top status bar. It works and it works well. Do a little research before you get mouth diarrhea about something you don't know about.

I've now got SSH installed and even the MobileTerminal unstable version that supports iOS 4 (available here, but requires manual install: http://code.google.com/p/mobileterminal/downloads/list

It's pretty buggy, but it works more or less.

Also now I get Activator. You have to tap the sbsettings (or whatever) to set it for that action. It looked like it was saying that it was already set. So now I've got that working and it's nifty to have these options.

EDIT: how do you add a 5th dock icon? I know you're supposed to be able to do that.

from the app description in cydia:

Sometimes the app descriptions take a moment to load in cydia, make sure you give it a second and give them a read, as they often contain useful information about the compatibility and details of an app.

its pretty small and it doesnt add much bulk. it leaves the top and bottom sides open so you shouldn't have a problem with any ports. and it has a nice felt back so your iphone doesn't move around.



also, what do you guys suggest what program to use to tether the iphone. can it be tethered using the usb?

pdanet is what i used on my 3g. worked like a champ
 
FYI, the exploit that the jailbreakme website uses is potentially the means for malware and such to be installed. Apple will undoubtedly plug this hole officially with a firmware update (which would also prevent the jailbreak), but in the mean time if you did jailbreak you can plug the hole by following this procedure (translated from Italian by google):

Only thing I'll add is that you should also change the root password if you installed OpenSSH!!! Very important. Do that by entering the command passwd in the terminal and following the prompts.

On a completely different note, why doesn't Rotation Inhibitor show up for me in the Cydia app? Does anyone see it? Supposedly it's compatible, but I can't install it. That would be a huge win if I could install it!

EDIT: and before anyone says it, the jailbreak didn't create the security hole, the jailbreak *uses* the security hole! It's there whether you jailbreak or not. Also, this fix puts up a confirmation dialog any time you try to download a pdf file, giving the option to cancel or to load. This works well in Safari, it's a bit weirder in iBooks, putting up multiple dialogs, requiring you to hit cancel over and over, until it finally gives an error message and stops. So it works, but it's wonky.

EDIT2: once installed, it shows up in Cydia under Manage -> Packages, as "pdfExploitWarner", so can be uninstalled later.

you can inhibit rotation by default in the mutitasking menu on ios4........


installed Musci Controls from cydia and it is awesome..this is it working with pandora...it also displays the song name on the status bar at all times...very nice app

I got all kinds of errors when I tried to add that source. Stuff about expired somethings or some such, etc. However, I still seemed to be able to install "All Sources" afterward. There were errors, though, including "host unreachable", "bad gateway" (or something about a gateway) and bzip2 errors, "cache failure" and other crap, and finally an "Error: Refreshing Data". How can I delete these sources? I don't see them listed under "Added by user", and it doesn't seem to be possible to delete ones that aren't under that heading? Also, what are the default ones? I want to go back to the defaults only.

There's an alternate jailbreak thing called Categories, but I haven't tried it yet, and I don't think it's suppose to be as slick, going strictly on what I've read in the past.

EDIT: that All Sources thing is a freakin' nightmare. Even if I can figure out what the default repositories are, I'm in for an epic few hours trying to remove the crap ones, because each time you remove one you have to go through all those damned reloads and error messages. I really wish I'd never tried that. Oh well. Lesson learned, and a word of warning to others.
 
crunch...just leave it alone....you are going to get errors..no big deal....for example ive been trying to download MyWi (wifi hotspot + usb tether) and the repo is getting hammered so hard that it keeps erroring out.....chill

if you are going to cry about everything just go back to stock
 
SpringFlash works AWESOME! I have it set on sleep button short hold through activator. Really cool and lets you turn on the led quickly!

another thing i make use of is the ability to hide icons in sbsettings under More > Hide Icons
 
i don't understand the multitask function.. i press the home button twice, and it brings up the multitask... but just about every app i have on my ipod appears... am i doing something wrong? shouldn't it only be showing 1 or 2?

every app you close automatically falls into the multitask menu...to remove from multitasking touch & hold the icon until it wiggles then tap the red circle thingy
 
what are the main two repos that need to be installed.
sorry, im a complete newb at this.

i really like how sbsettings work, but i totally hate the freaking ads. is there a paid version?

what main 2? i have SEVERAL repos installed including ones i had to do manually

no paid version of sbsettings......the ads dont bother me..there apparently is a way to get rid of them though....do a little searching
