I really hope they add a hard keyboard to the next one because I'm getting really tired of having to spell check every word I type(spell check might think i typed a different word) because my fingers are pretty big, even when I use it horizontally.

That and I've been disappointed with ios4 so far.

I mean there are some great things about the phone, but I think I sometimes get overwhelmed with it. I have a 3gs btw.
meh

Hey everyone since I have gotten my new iDevice I have been wondering how to do the following: When I close an app it is still running in the background (multi-tasking) , so is there a way to just fully close out the app on closing it without having to double click the home button and closing it there ?

thanks in advance.

Curiously enough, the Griffin Reveal Etch has started to grow on me a bit. As it gets more crumbly looking, it's starting to look sort of stylishly "distressed". Or maybe I'm just resigned to it. Not sure which. :)

Actually, I like the look of it except for this trait of it. Would like a black case that is of higher quality, but which also works with my fat and angled jack headphones (i don't think the bumper case would, but I do like the look of it quite a bit. Not enough to give up my headphones, though.

I'm probably late to the party but I'd like to add that iOS 4.1 really helped my lowly 3G. Thank goodness. I was nearly frustrated into getting an early Iphone 4.

The new Case-Mate Hula cases look pretty nice. Essentially a bumper case, but with clear sides (clear TPU plastic in the middle, colored silicone on the edges), but with a larger headphone jack and such. It's not entirely clear it will work with my headphones, but I'm considering one:

There's a variety of colors. The video seems to show the colors looking better then the stills do. Not sure which one is closer to reality. I might pick up the white case to go with my black iPhone 4 (is there even going to ever be a white iPhone 4?)

EDIT: I decided to throw caution to the wind and placed an order (for a white one). I'll post pictures once I get it.

I got my white Case-Mate Hulu in. It is very well made and everything lines up very nicely. However, I think I should have gone with the black. The white is going to take some getting use to on my black iPhone. I suppose I should have known that. LOL. I like the clear sides a lot and I like that the back is open - no problems with the flash (well, I haven't tested that, but I can't imagine that it would be a problem!) I also haven't tried my headphones yet, but I'm a little worried they won't work with it. I'll update this later with photos and such, in a few days. I wonder if they'd let me return it and exchange for a black one, though. I'm going to email them.

EDIT: I've decided to return the case. They offer a return for refund within 30 days for any reason. I've decided I prefer a case that covers the back and, in spite of my complaints about the Griffin Reveal Etch, I find that it's more comfortable to hold and I like the look of it, at least when you don't look too closely. :)

anyone else have problems with screen protectors.

my zagg protector is ruined (mostly my fault) now because my case would occasionally push up the corners or the screen protector. i believe this is because of the tight fit that many cases have on the iphone 4 thanks to the new design. after several months of being pushed up the edges became grimy and never sat back down like it does in the center. so i tried to "clean" the edges with the spray included in the kit, and that just made it worse, so ive taken the whole damn thing off. i know i can order a replacement from zagg, but im not sure i want to because of the problem, i think i might just rock no screen protector.

ive tried several different cases and the pushed up edges always seems to happen, some worse than others. does anyone know of a good case/screen protector combo? it seems like the bumper might be the best bet, but im not a fan of them and ive already ordered my free case.

i have the zagg front & back with the apple bumper and it comes up over the edges of the zagg on both sides with no issues......i like it cause it actually keeps me from catching the edges of the zagg on anything.

I was starting to kind of like the Griffin Reveal Etch in spite of it's flaws, and then bottom of the case ripped and in retrospect it's obvious why - the rubber material is too soft to have such a narrow piece at the bottom on the front side of the dock connector. What a piece of crap case. How long did it last me? A month? Something like that. Terrible. I've gone back to my Case-Mate Gelli. Not entirely happy with it, but it seems more sturdy. I'm considering, though, getting a Speck Geometric or maybe their Candyshell. Anyone have either of these? Impressions?

iphone nano rumors are starting to swirl. id actually be slightly interested in one depending on how nerfed it is. i wouldnt mind going back to a smaller phone.

Apple Inc. is working on the first of a new line of less-expensive iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition.

One of the people, who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said it is intended for sale alongside Apple's existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model.

The new phone—one of its code names is N97—would be available to carriers at about half the price of the main iPhones. That would allow carriers to subsidize most or all of the retail price, putting the iPhone in the same mass-market price range as rival smartphones, the person said. Apple currently sells iPhones to carriers for $625 each on average. With carrier subsidies, consumers can buy iPhones for as little as $199 with a two-year contract.

Don't you need the screen to be a standard size though for all of the apps to run properly? Anything smaller and it would be impossible to sue most apps without major redesigns for each.

I think it'd just have to be the same resolution.

Yeah, I'd think if the screen was small developers would have to put out apps for that phone just like most have updated popular iPhone apps for the iPads larger screen.

If I ever get a smart phone, I wouldn't want one with a smaller screen though as that would reduce it's functionality for the kinds of things I'd want a smart phone for--reading Kindle books on the go, newspaper apps, e-mail etc.

Question about in-app purchases. Do your in-app purchases cross multiple devices, or do you have to buy the IAP on each one even though the apps is installable on all of them?

ive never made an in-app purchase. i would assume they do because the apps do.

a quick google search says, maybe...

Transferring an in app purchase

Subscriptions and replenishable in app purchases cannot be transferred or synced to another iOS device. Non-replenishable in app purchases can be transferred to another iOS device authorized with your iTunes Store account. For example, if you transfer a game from an iPhone to an iPod touch, only the game levels will sync over, the extra ammo and experience points will not be transferred.

Anyone know a good app for streaming files from a PC? I was thinking something that worked over a network would be good, I dont think if use it in the go (I'd put files on my phone or use my laptop for that). All I can find are remote desktop apps and that's more than I'm looking for.
what kind of files?
Video and pictures.

I found a couple of apps that cost $3 each by changing my search terms. But I hate to spend the money only to find out I don't like the app, but I may have to. Anyone know of a free one maybe?

So my contract is up on AT&T and I'm ready to jump ship to Verizon, upgrading from a 3GS to a 4. Only pending if there isn't some sort of AT&T exclusive iPhone 5 deal announced later today. The service just sucks and is getting worse. My girlfriend and I both have iPhones on AT&T and last week I received a text from her at 3AM that she sent to me a week prior. Strange stuff has happened to us before on their network, but that was the most random.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it would be possible to transfer game/app save files to a new phone? Either through restoring or through jailbreaking.

Just use iTunes' restore feature. That property is tied to your iTunes account, not your phone.

Get away from AT&T. Verizon uses CDMA and AT&T uses GSM (i.e., SIM Cards). What this means for you may not be much.

For me? I had my iPhone 4 stolen a few weeks back after having it for just over 2 months. I thought "lucky I set up a find my iPhone account."

How easy was it for the thief to circumvent the Find My iPhone locator? He turned the device off and later, swapped out the SIM card. I'll never see it again, and Apple could give a fuck, and AT&T says "oh, hey, that's $650 for a new one."

Verizon's CDMA phone doesn't have a removeable card and the phones themselves are activated, not SIM cards. It will be *much* more difficult for thieves to figure out how to get around verizon iphones. Not impossible (nothing is).

I'm still with AT&T through the duration of my contract, but will be going with the best secure iPhone provider at that time. AT&T, as of right now, couldn't pay *me* a monthly fee to stick with their service.

Interesting point about a thief removing the sim card to foil find-my-phone. I never thought of that. I'm going to stick with AT&T, though. The service has gotten better in my case. Not sure about texts. They seem to work fine, but I don't do a lot of texting so wouldn't necessarily have hit any problems with that. Hopefully if anybody ever steals my phone they won't prove to be so smart. :)

Just do what myke said. But that will just transfer games and apps over. It won't transfer over any save data for games that's stored on the phone. If the data is cloud based you should be ok.

White. Black. Black. White. Can't decide. I think I'm going to need to see the iPad 2 in person. I think I like the white, but I can't quite be sure from the pictures. Anyone else unsure of what to get?

Also, I don't know if I should get a WiFi-only or a WiFi+3G. While it's not 4G, that isn't a huge deal to me. I'm pretty happy with the speed of AT&T 3G. I mean sure it would be better if it was faster then it is, but it's certainly usable, and having the option of not having to tether (wirelessly or not) is nice. Plus it has a GPS in it, which I think I'd like. Not really sure how useful that would be with an iPad though. Certainly not as useful as it is on the iPhone. It's not like I'll be using it to navigate in my car - I can see the iPad car mount now.... :)

Hopefully they've got a ton of supply so it won't be necessary to pre-order and I can go see it and then decide.

I'm also a little disappointing, though it's a minor issue, that none of the non-leather "covers" are dark in color. They're all light colors. You can't get black without paying for the more expensive leather version. I do like the design of it, though.

I'm still on the fence about getting one. Leaning toward no as the way they're trying to strong arm some Apps like Kindle about out of app purchases irks me, and that's one App I'd want as I have a Kindle.

Also not a fan of that new cover at all. Just looks too flimsy and I'd have to buy a sleeve as well so feel confortable tossing it in my briefcase/laptop bag and that's too much cost. So I'd pick up some third party case that's more like the ipad one case as I'd rather have a case than a cover and sleeve combo.

I really want an iPad (especially so I can use all the apps I own for the iPhone I no longer possess ;))...but even though I'm one of *those* Apple people, the improvements for this iPad don't impress me much, if at all. Especially since the pricepoints are the same for the same storage size. That's the biggest downer.

When is the iPad 3 coming out?

I really wasn't impressed with the iPad 2. It had all the upgrades I expected it to, I guess I just thought there might be something more. Between my laptop, netbook and iphone, I'm pretty well covered. I simply can't justify an iPad 2 (not to mention the price!).

Price doesn't bug me. I'm just hesistant as I'm worried some apps like Kindle will get pulled or gimped due to Apple demanding them to add in-app purchasing so Apple can take their 30% cut.

And I hate the closed system. I really want to just be able to drag and drop my files onto whatever tablet I have and keep them organized etc. It's a bit of a hassle to get things like PDFs etc. onto the iPad and into different PDF programs etc. Have to use iTunes or Dropbox etc. It's manageable, my girlfriend loves hers and reads a ton of PDFs on it etc. I'm just more anal about wanting control of my files and an intuitive drag and drop system etc.

I'm also still holding out slim hope that someone will put out a tablet that's closer to a PC in functionality without being big, bulky and hot running with short battery life like current convertible laptops/slate PCs.

Though no one seems interested in making anything other than multimedia tablets right now. So I'm half willing to give up on getting a tablet for reading and marking up documents etc. and just going with an iPad or other smaller multimedia tablet for web surfing, apps, games, e-mail when traveling etc. and sticking with printouts for things like scholarly articles I need to mark up, grading grad student papers etc.

The only regret I have is getting 3g with my ipad1 64gb. I rationalized the GPS feature, but to be honest, never used the 3g data in past year. So yeah, i'd recommend skipping the 3G, unless you travel 24/7 and can expense the data charges.

I'll probably end up getting the 32gb wifi, since my 2yr old monopolizes the original ipad, and 32GB is plenty to store just games.

I need some opinions. I'd really like to pick up an iPad. But I'm not sure if I want to jump into an iPad2, or just pick up a 16GB iPad1 at Best Buy tomorrow for $400, and wait for the iPad3.

What would you do in this situation? =/

iPhone users with renter's insurance/home insurance: add your device to your policy as personal property. It's roughly $30/year, and most (State Farm, Geico, and Allstate) will reimburse you the retail price if anything happens to it.

To play devils advocate, if someone gets ahold of your phone and realizes it's a Verizon iPhone, you're still shit out of luck when they smash it into a million pieces because they can't use or resell it.

I'd go with an iPad 2 if I get one as I want the camera's for Skype and Facetime if I take the plunge.
Has the amount of RAM in the iPad2 been announced yet?
Gizmodo was saying 256MB, which sounds absolutely pathetic if true.

Im also one of "those" Apple guys, and Im not going to even try and upgrade to this. 1st gen iPad will be just fine.

A few of my client's families will be happy with the iPad price reductions. iPads make awesome teaching tools for kids with autism.

They should jump quickly, I'm sure the refurbs and discounted new iPad first gens will go quickly, and the prices stayed the same for the new one.

So the inclusion of autistic kids in today's event wasn't just a discusting attempt to pull heartstrings?

Good idea. I'll make some calls tomorrow.
So the inclusion of autistic kids in today's event wasn't just a discusting attempt to pull heartstrings?
Heh, I didn't watch the conference, so I wasn't aware they did that.

There are some apps, both in education and gaming, that are great. The one app, ProLoquo2Go, helps kids speak. Similar devices can cost a couple thousand dollars. It's pretty amazing that I can now ask my one non verbal client how her weekend was and she can string together a sentence and tell me.

Games are nice because they provide something to do during unstructured free time. Big relief for parents, and with a ton of free apps, its easy to find something educational and entertaining. Most of my clients find console/ portable gaming too complex or lack the fine motor skills to use dpads and buttons, so iOS games fill that void.
