iPhone, iPad & iOS Discussion -- White iPhone on Sale 4/28

Any recommendations for apps that help with household budgeting? Something like the ability to put in how much monthly income you have then list every time you make a purchase and have it automatically adjust your balance?

Well I heard that new iPad 2 with 4G LTE are coming this Fall. I expect a $100 priedrop on this model.

My local Best Buy must have only gotten a limited amount, they had sold out when I got there but the line was only about a dozen people. Oh well, I'll wait until I can walk in and get one. The good news is I found out how much I have on my GCs while I was there and it's only going to cost me $150 out of pocket. :)

Well, I checked Best Buy's website and another store a little farther away still had some in stock so I drove over after dinner. On the way I talked myself into getting the 64-gig version, when originally I thought I'd go with the 32-gig model. $100 more over the lifespan probably won't amount to much, and I'm sure I can find stuff to fill it up!

By the way, I got the last one. :D

Another guy in the checkout line said he was at the local Apple store and there were 500 people in line with him, he waited 3 hours and when they sold out he was #4 in line to get one! He ended up with one, though, so I was happy for him.

I use mint.com. You put in all your accounts (credit cards, savings, checking, 401K, etc.) on the website and you can access them online or via an app on any iOS device.

I got my 32gb ipad today. I waited in line for 3 hours to get one. They ran out of the AT&T 3G models at around 6pm.

I noticed the backlight on two of the corners are a lot brighter than the rest of it though. Has anybody else noticed this? I'll wait a couple of days to see if it fixes itself. Otherwise, I'm going to have to exchange it for another one.
Aw, man, I hope they're not selling out at apple stores. I'm headed to cherry hill nj one first thing tomorrow morning.
From posts on other forums, it sounds like most Apple stores sold out this evening.

Backlight bleeding was an issue with the old iPad and I guess it still is carried over to this new design. It probably will not fix itself and you will need to exchange it for another if it really bothers you but the next one may have similar issues in another area of the screen or other issues like dead pixels. Last year, I had a 16 GB iPad with no issues and sold it to get a 32 GB that had backlight bleeding and a few dead pixels so I ended up returning that one as well and got my money back since the iPad 2 was rumored and I could wait. Shame it seems this problem still exists.

My favorite thing about the iPad 2: ...my front facing camera is ridiculously broken.

EDIT: Video taken with said camera.

I use ace budget.

Got my 16 GB wifi black iPad yesterday. Here's my story:

Woke up at 3 to order my iPad (I'm in the Midwest). Got my order in by 3:04 a.m. Woke up, went to work and followed the iPad 2 news. Then saw people's expected ship dates start rolling back into the 2-3 week range. I began to worry that it was going to affect my ship date, so around 3:15 in the afternoon, I called my local Target.

Talked to the electronics clerk and asked him how many units they had - he said 5, all 16 GB wifi, which was what I wanted. I then asked how long the line was - he said there was nobody there. I told him I'd be in shortly.

I left work a little early, hopped in my car and headed over there, fully expecting there to be a line when I got there at 4 - there wasn't. So I stood there and formed a line of 1 for about half an hour before the 2nd customer came in. By 5, there had only been 7 people, and the 2 who couldn't get one turned around and left. I really didn't think it would be that easy.

To put it in perspective, the Best Buy around the corner sold out, and they got like 180 iPads. So, if you're looking for an iPad, check your local Target before you head to Best Buy.

That's pretty terrible and you should definitely get it exchanged even though you don't care about that function. Would kill the resale value. They are great about exchanges though I'd call and see if they have any replacements in stock. To do an exchange in store you need to get a genius bar appointment. You do that via the store website.

I stopped into the Apple Store tonight and checked out the iPad 2. I've decided to order the black instead of the white. The white had that same dingy look that I've seen in some photos. I think in some light it has that look and I didn't care for it. Maybe it would be more accurate to call it off-white. The black looked good so I'm going with that. Also decided I really didn't like any of the light color covers, so ordered the black leather one even though it seems overpriced. It said 3 to 4 weeks for the iPad (Black 64 GB AT&T) and the black leather cover is 1 to 2 weeks, though I could have bought the cover in-store - they had all the colors, at least they did today.

I really enjoyed using it in the store, as did my kids. Browsing on the thing is fantastic, though of course one of my sons tried to go to a bakugan or some such site and of course it didn't work (Flash). He was bummed. I was not - that's one less reason he has to want to use it instead of me. :) They still had a lot of fun with them and didn't want to leave when I said it was time to. I'm glad I went to check it out before ordering, but also wishing it was going to arrive sooner then a month from now!

Quick question. When i connect my ipad to my itunes it automatically asked me to update the iOS but my iPhone it does not. Any reason for this?

I believe they spread out the notification of updates so that their servers don't get overwhelmed. However you can make it check for updates manually. FYI, it just automatically told me about the update today for my iPhone today. Didn't yesterday.

Yeah even when I hit check for updates it says my software is up to date even though it has 4.2 on it

Perhaps they are not sending it out even if you do try to check manually, rather sending it out on a schedule. I believe you can download the firmware directly and install it that way, but I don't have a link for you. Otherwise you can probably just try each day and it ought to show up eventually.

Got my blue smart cover today. I like the color and it's built pretty well.

iPad has made it to Alaska and is still estimated for delivery on Thursday by FedEx.

You could always check around locally as you can cancel the online order anytime up until it hits the prepared to ship status.

From other Apple forums it seems some apple stores are opening at 9am tomorrow to sell a new shipment. Maybe check with your local one if you can make it by in the morning if they're doing it. Otherwise maybe just check in on a random morning here and there and hope to luck into a new shipment if you want it sooner since they're not doing a wait list for future shipments like they did with the iPad 1.

Online ship times are very delayed now. Just ordered a 64gb AT&T 3g one for a friend, estimated delivery is April 14th.

Quick update, since I've been playing with mine since I got it. It's MUCH snappier than the first gen. Thumbs up on the new silicon! The bad news, the cameras suck huge ones. Even though I don't have any issues like Kush up there posted, the quality is pretty horrendous. 720p videos look ok, not great, but low-end passable, and the still photos are just plain bad, no other way to put it. That's my biggest gripe, other than that it's been great. When they increase the screen to a retina display and fix the camera issues I may upgrade, but overall I'm happy I waited for this gen hardware.

Are the camera's at least ok for Skype and Facetime?

I don't give a crap about shooting videos or taking photos with a 10" tablet. I just wanted a web cam for video calls. Is it on par with say a typically crummy laptop webcam which is what I use now?

yep. 8am classes tomorrow. I can live a few weeks longer, but thanks for the headsup.

Yeesh. I'm not a morning person though so I ask not to teach morning classes. Haven't had to teach a class before 1:30 yet.

Downside is I get stuck with the super late 7-10pm classes most semesters which are later than I'd like--prefer the 4-7 classes as my ideal time for the once a week ones.

Yes, you won't have any problems with Facetime using the cameras, they are USABLE in that regard, but I was just hoping that since Apple was upgrading hardware they would have taken the time to put better imaging electronics into the thing. I suppose that will come next rev when it gets the retina display.

Thanks. I agree it would be great to have better cameras, but I can't really see myself taking pictures with it as as it's bulky so I won't carry it around like I do my phone or small digital camera, so it's largely moot for me personally.

All that would do is raise the cost and for what? Who is going to use it to take photos aside from a few test snapshots when you first get it? IMHO, that would be a waste of money. All you need is cameras for video conferencing and for making profile pictures, which I think the ones they've provided will do more then adequately. I played with it in store and the quality for PhotoBooth, for example, was perfectly fine, and you can make a fun profile picture with that. No one is going to be running around taking photos with an iPad. That's just completely ridiculous IMHO.

P.S. if I ever see an iPad 2, Motorola Xoom or other 10" tablet user snapping photos with it, I'll be sure to take a photo of them doing it. :)

Wow, Fed Ex shipping has been crazy fast. Since early yesterday my iPad 2 has made it from Hong Kong to Alaska, then to Memphis overnight and then to Atlanta this morning an is now out for delivery! Was originally scheduled for delivery on Thursday.

I'm going to go back to the apple store this weekend to get an exchange for mine. The bleeding issue doesn't bug me on regular surfing, but I can see myself getting pissed at it when I'm watching a letterbox movie.

I got mine around noon. Haven't noticed bleeding yet, but haven't tried it in dark room like in photos on other forums.

I actually probably won't bother with that anyway since I'd never use it in pitch black anyway. I'll try watching something letter boxed in bed with the lamp on with is about as dark as I'm ever likely to use the iPad and see if I notice any there.

I can't even remember what the deal was, but a while back I read about how AT&T was giving 1000 free rollover minutes to select customers, except that anybody could send the expected response to the specific number and they would get the minutes. I sent it and never heard much... until just now. 1000 minutes deposited into my account. Not that it really matters. I never use up the minutes I have. It's the principal of it that counts, so I call it a WIN! :)

I've got some backlight bleed, too, but not nearly bad enough to warrant taking back. Of course, now that encendido said it, I'm going to be looking at the backlight bleed in the corners.

Anyway, I don't think the iPad's backlight bleed is as noticeable as my Nook Color's was. On black screens, that tablet glowed just above the "n" button pretty obviously. Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me on my iPad.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to whip out the iPad to snap photos, but if I'm using it and see something I want to take a photo of it would be nice to be able to snap a pic right then and there and have a decent quality picture that I can keep, instead of a noisy, crappy photo that later I'll wish I had taken with a decent quality camera. That's all I'm saying.

FYI, I had a little backlight bleed when I first used mine, but as I used it more it pretty much cleared up.

Yeah, I've read the same elsewhere. Theory is that it's a glue issue. The screen is just glued together this time, and apparently the glue goes on clear and turns solid as it dries. So when it dries less light should bleed out.

I haven't noticed it on mine yet, but I haven't used it much since I'm at work (and had to deal with my damn car not starting and having to get towed to the shop again!).

Hmm... Well I'll see how it is after this weekend. The bleeding gets worse when I push on the edges so maybe it just needs to loosen up a bit.

Got my 64GB black today!

Oh wow.... it does feel really nice in your hands. I didn't think I'd like the curves so much.
And the weight loss, though subtle, is wonderful.
SO THIN!

So much faster, I love it!
Everything loads much more quickly. Doing side by sides and there's no contest (still have my iPad 1 for now)

Loaded up one of my physics simulators, filled both screens with "water" and splashed them around.
Older iPad chugs and plays at ~15fps, the iPad 2 doesn't skip a beat and stays a perfect 60fps.

I'm jealous. :( I hope mine ships sooner then 3 to 4 weeks.

Y'all should be jealous of me. I'm sitting pretty on a grey smart cover.

I can look at it, and it's like...there, man. there.

condor80 is my S/N on it if you want to send an invite.

I have Words with Friends, and played it a lot at first, but the lack of 3 and 4 player games killed it for me. Plus I prefer the official scrabble board layout and rules (why not 2x points for the first word, for example?) Having said that, the official Scrabble app is infuriating as hell. It crashes and almost always logs me out of Facebook each time I go back to it. Most of the time I can just tap the login button, but sometimes I even have to reenter my facebook login. Grrr.... Still, I play it and not WWF. Scrabble is just a better game, especially 3 and 4 player.

Also, I won two free copies of upcoming Atari 2600 port of Endura. :) I guessed that was the next game from the dev (maker of the free Freeway port, and other 2600 ports) on toucharcade.com. I get two free copies once it's released. Yeah for likely $2 in winnings. ;)
