CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.
I should have waited and spent the money of shazam instead. Oh well. :bomb:

Maybe shazam will have unlimited again.:bouncy:
I gave up on shazam, pissed me off as an early adopter of their app. Besides, sound hound offers better features and it's so much faster on identifying songs. Their dev seems to listen to people, and I happily gave them my $$.

I cant believe UMK3 dropped so fast and so low. Its not better than SF and it has its control issues, but its still alot of fun for MK and fighting game fans like myself. Id imagine that like SFIV when it first came out, that it will get alot of support and updates to fix and tweak it. For 99c hell yes its worth it. Altho trying to beat shao khan is even harder now. :D

wait, so what is the difference now between the free and paid versions of soundhound? Are there any?
It's not on sale, but Reiner Knizia's Labyrinth HD is a fun solitaire game, that has some connection, sort of, with Carcassonne. Well, just that it's tile placing game. The mechanics of it and theme are completely different. Get the HD version if you think you'll get an iPad or have one, as it's universal. If you don't plan to ever get an iPad, save yourself a few bucks and get the iPhone/iPod touch version which is cheaper, but not universal.http://appshopper.com/games/reiner-knizias-labyrinth-hd
I thought Labyrinth was boring and TOO luck based, really.
wait, so what is the difference now between the free and paid versions of soundhound? Are there any?
With the limit lifted, the only difference is ads. See here: http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/12/free-version-soundhound-includes-sharing-abilities-big-surprise/

I paid $5 for it and it has been worth it for me. I switched earlier this year, after getting frustrated with what shazam did (music ID limit, if the system produces an error during a search it counts as one of the free and it being SLOW). Soundhound can find all of the songs I want in usually a 1/4 of the time shazam could. I happily support them, this latest move of lifting the song limit shows how good this dev is and I think they have a superior app. Go with the free version, you'll like it.

Paid version is ad free, the free version isn't.
PvZ HD is truly the best way to play that game.
So much fun to control with your fingers.
Definitely worth $10, borderline criminal for $7, even the third time around.
I've been through it 4x...(mac/iphone/ipad/xbox)
Aside from the graphics, is PvZHD any different from the iPhone version? My kids play the iPhone one in 2x on the iPad and it's not like they care about graphical nuance. But if there are a lot more missions or other advantages to getting the HD version, I'll pick it up for them.
Just got a free ipad from work...whoop whoop!
Me too! I won a sales contest at work and got it yesterday. Just picked up SimCity HD for .99 cents. Hoping for an iTunes GC for Christmas so I can pick up PvZ HD.

Soundhound is great. I love it for the ability to grab lyrics for me and link to videos. I also agree that it is faster then Shazam, I usually only have to play about 5 or so seconds of a song before it gives me a result and I've never had a wrong result yet.
I thought Labyrinth was boring and TOO luck based, really.
I enjoy it. It's definitely light fare, but it's a good time killer, and there is some strategy to it. I don't find it boring, but that's an opinion so there you go. Oh, and I prefer Angry Birds over Cut the Rope. :)

If you're looking for a neat way to show off your iPad, you could grab our new (FREE) game Card Ace: Casino HD!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/card-ace-casino-hd/id408468471?mt=8

It's basically Word Ace & Card Ace: Hold 'Em designed from the ground up for the iPad, along with a blown-up version of Blackjack (which will be updated in the next version with a new tactile interface). Basically, we thought everyone else who was doing card games on the iPad was missing the point of the whole large-screen interface, and we wanted to do things up right.

So with CA:CHD, you grab chips & move 'em around. You fold by mucking your cards. It's completely cross-compatible with other versions of our games, so you can jump in & play with tens of thousands of players online worldwide.

Did I mention it's free? :D

Cheers!

Exclusive mini-game "Buttered Popcorn" and support for more multi-touch (I think it went up from like 5 to 11, not 100%) which is useful for 2-player. Personally I think if you already have the iPhone version then you should save your money unless you are a PvZ addict.

taken from Touch arcade, Activision sale. got THPS2

• Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 ($1.99→ $.99)
• Rapala® Pro Bass Fishing ($1.99→ $.99)
• Cabela's® Dangerous Hunts 2011 ($4.99→ $.99)
• Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D ($2.99→ $.99)

^ Thanks for the heads up, but how are the controls for THPS2? Use to play the **** out of THPS2 on Dreamcast.

Just got my $50 iTunes card ^^ Purchased FFII (so far seems so so) , Crimson Gem Saga (haven't tried it yet), and Chu Chu Rocket. Any other rpg recommendations? Really wanted to get Chaos Ring, but after reading some posts on this thread I'm not sure if its worth it.

I bought a bunch of RPGs in the past week, haven't really had a chance to try them all, but these were the ones that I bought:

 • ZENONIA® @ $0.99
 • ZENONIA® 2 @ $0.99
 • Dungeon Defenders: First Wave @ $2.99
 • ILLUSIA @ $2.99
 • HYBRID @ $0.99
 • HYBRID 2 @ $0.99
 • Queen's Crown @ $0.99

All but Dungeon Defenders are/were on sale. Queen's Crown's price went up again (to $2.99, normal I believe is $4.99, I got it for $0.99 yesterday or the day before).

As mentioned, can't say if they are GOOD (barely played some), but @ $0.99 I can't even complain, that's a ton of hours to play ;)

Looked up Zenonia 2 and it looked cool so I got it :). Thanks
So I guess iTunes Connect is down now, and all sales and game updates are frozen for almost a week?
is it today or tomorrow? I'll wait till tonight.

I've read a few places it was on the 23rd, though I now see there's still stuff on appshopper dropping as recently as 20 minutes ago. It may go down at 11 PM, the time all new releases come out usually?

What an asinine policy.
What an asinine policy.
Well, this is Apple we're talking about . . . I'm sure they're expecting an explosion of traffic in the next 48 hours and want to "batten down the hatches" as much as they can.

But it's still stupid.

Thanks for the info. I have Zenonia 1 and 2 (haven't tried it) and tried hybrid (which I didn't like for some reason). Kinda regret missing Queen's Crown at 0.99, but I still have Zenonias if I ever wanted to get my action rpg fix. Didn't hear too much about Dungeon Defenders or Illusia; guess I'll dl the lite versions of those.

Crimson Gem Saga is awesome; love the narrative so far. I like how it doesn't take itself seriously. Regret buying Osmos...I don't see the appeal.

It seems the app store has stopped updating at the moment...so I'm guessing no more price changes for couple of days now.

What is "iTunes Connect"?
What is "iTunes Connect"?
From what I remember reading, it's part of the process developers use to submit their apps to Apple. It has nothing to do with us as the buying public (we don't have access to it) except it's also used to adjust pricing. Apple is taking a few days off for the holidays so they're not allowing developers to monkey around with their apps during that time.

From the fine folks at Touch Arcade, here's a massive recap of notable current sale titles. All prices *should* be good until next Thursday (see above) but you never know. If you see something you want, better snag it now while it's still on sale:

EA Mobile

Capcom -
Square Enix -
Sega -
Namco -

Miscellaneous Sales -

I demand a Christmas sale on Infinity Blade for $0.99..

just what i need, another game to buy and not finish...but this one looks playable.. C'mon sale!

Some of those prices above are not accurate, but it is a good start at a list. The puzzle game Pinch is free and that one seems great. I will say it again Neuroshima Hex is one of the best apps I have played, the devs are working on making it universal and will add multiplayer later, try the lite version, but make suremyou walk through the rule book.

Didn't realize infinite gene was universal, i will be picking that up later.

Those new to iPad,iPod don't miss the Christmas version of cut the rope and beyond ynth, fun little extended demos form those games.

One more recommendation, islashhd is down to 99 cents and worth a look.

Quick question does Age of Zombies have any differences from the PS3 minis version, I loved that game dialogue was hilarious, but I don't feel like a double dip if they are the same. Looking forward to AoZ part two, hopefully.

As someone who is getting an iPad tomorrow, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing that here!

Age of Zombies looks like a 2D version of Minigore. Is it even worth getting if I already have Minigore?

edit: oh what the hell, I bought it anyway since it's only $1.

^^^ Haha I was just in the same boat. I enjoyed Minigore so I bit on AoZ for $1.

Bought FF1 for $4 as well plus grabbed 6 more freebies off Dimsdales list. Thanks for posting.

Edit:
AoZ rocks, just made it to level 2. Fun game so far and for sure worth 105 pennies, darn tax!
War of Eustrath looks pretty impressive. Anyone here play it?
I was curious too, but then I saw this vid...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwkNmW4yjXY

from the looks of it it seems very underwhelming for a tactical rpg. I think I would rather wait for FF Tactics

**edit** Are the sales ending tonight? Just went to the app store on my phone and scrolled through RPG sections and Chaos Rings was listed $11.99, but when I clicked on it inside it was still listed as $5.99. I quickly bought it fearing that the sale was going to be over, and it seems that Apple only took $5.99 off my credits. I see all of the EA games listed at regular prices.

Nvm, the listings reverted back to itself. For a brief moment it wasn't....kinda wish I've taken a screen shot to prove my point.

Bounce On is today's FAAD featured freebie (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bounce-on/id300438180?mt=8). Apparently the price was changed before the lockout, so it should remain free for the next few days.

"Get your Bounce On! Team Phobic presents Bounce On, a new side scrolling platform game in the vein of Sonic and Mario.

After falling from a familiar pocket, roll and bounce your way through 75 levels on your adventure home. Keep your eyes out for priceless gems, adorable enemies, and amazing power-ups you'll encounter on your journey.

The achievement system provides challenging gameplay for beginners and pros alike, giving hours of fun for all skill levels. "
