It's a shame the PS2 Hard drive is barely used

I've been looking around and seeing the drive go for 70 - 80 dollars but why buy it if only like 5 games support it. If games like Raw vs Smackdown and GTA:San Andreas would have supported it I'm sure I and many others would have picked one up. Also I'm guessing that PS3 won't be backward compatable with this hard drive since SONY is barely supporting it now.
 
hard what? oh, that thing. yeah, its dead in the water like most other hardware add ons. shame though. could've put it to good use.
 
o god why did i waste $100 on this thing...its been collecting dust since a week after i got it...

was hoping they would actually use it..damn sony

Yep, if it wasn't for HDloader, there would be a lot of seriously pissed off individuals with $100 bricks shoved up the ass of their PS2s.

Probably twice as many games in japan actually use the HDD (Xenosaga and Wilkd arms 3 for example) Unfortunatly because of Sony's lack of faith in the peripheral in the US market. it was late to the game and suffered for that reason.

Support isnt completely erroded though as there are still millions of Old PS2s out there that can use it so just because there a system that dosent use it dosent mean there wont be any other games to use it. I just think some of the more major games by pass it becuase they;d rather spend time on the game itself rather than peripheral support.
 
it would've been nice. I might've bought it if more games were supported and it could be used as a big memory (not just an archiver, that is too much trouble).
 
I have FFXI (paid 59.99 for it new with the HDD), so that and the HDLoader and I got my $$ worth in spades. ^^ TY sony!

FFX was rereleased with the upgrades/characters added to the American release as "Final Fantasy X International," and it will install files on the HD and run of the disc. It plays wonderfully fast.

King of Colosseum Red/Green "fuse" using the HDD: you can install the red files on the HDD, play with the Green disc, and select any wrestler from either title.

It sure gets more use, but it's still a bit sparse.

The HD loader is awesome, so I don't have to risk ruining my games (and I even hate scuffs on my game cases, so it's incredible). The loading times make it even more worthwhile.

Smackdown vs Raw didn't work on the HDLoader, though, so I've been playing that off the disc. I did install HCTP, and added someone's ECW CAW save file, and that game has so much more life now. Not to turn this into a "Smackdown vs Raw is the greatest disappointment this year for me" thread, but HCTP's roster is light years better than SVR; add the HDLoader compatibility (which greatly reduces the game's godawful load times), and you have a great game.

Now, as for US games supporting the HDD. Think PocketStation.

The HDD was DOA.

In a way I suppose I should be glade I got both my HDD and modem for free for being a beta tester.

I suppose if I'd paid for them I too, would be looking for ways to use the HD loader with it and pileing tons of ols PS1 saves on it... actually I should back them up anyway.

One of the OPM discs has the new maps on them, if you can get a copy, you can get them. It's one of the last 2 or 3 issues, so it shouldn't that hard to get.

The ESPN Sports line for this fall uses it for direct saving, I believe so that would add 3 more to that tally.
 
For what its worth, I was just reading about the HD Loader program. If you have an external enclosure for an internal hard drive (typically, a USB 2.0 enclosure), you can install original imported games and play them from your HDD on your American PS2. Of course, this is the case only if the game is compatible with the HD Loader.

You need a program that will install a PS2 game from a disc onto the HDD via your PC; I'll let you do the looking.

Since I gave up FFXI, this may mean I will sell my Japanese PS2 in the coming months. Room for another console!

They released one already! After Hours it came on the disk with the playstation magazine (with GTA: San Andreas on the cover). I got it and it really is a nice map.

I only bought the HDD for Socom 2 maps, and as a big ass memory card. When I am out of my Socom phase, I will get a HDLoader to use with it.
 
Well, the hard drive won't be used to any great extent. You have a sort of chicken and the egg problem here. People won't buy a HD until there are real advantages to owning it. Companies won't set up usage for it until it has a large install base (why would Rockstar want to alienate millions of sales by using the HD, when most people don't have it).

So, like most periphreals, it won't be much of a factor. You have to include the HD with the system if you want people to use it.
 
It's true that Sony should have more games support the hard drive. However, I paid like $60 in one of the cheapass deals a while back for mine. I haven't even opened FFXI, I will probably just sell it on Ebay for the going rate of $25-30. So basically, for about $30 I never have to buy another of Sony's damn overpriced memory cards again, plus I have a backup of all of my data that stands less of a chance of getting corrupted or erased. For that reason alone, I don't regret my HDD purchase.
 
The Maxtor 80GB hard drive in my PS2 gets used all the time because I have HD Loader. Good thing too because my PS2 is almost 3 years old and gets very picky about playing discs.
 
Everybody with half a brain knew that this was a white elephant from the moment it was announced. Shame for those that have spent money on it, but hardly a surprise.
 
Question about HDLoader? I know you can't play online games using the DNAS , but can you play them with a regular disk or does the DNAS detect the HDLoader on the hard drive?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I use the original disc when I play online games and it seems to work fine thus far, then again I have a Sony HDD in there now, so I dunno if that matters. But I'm pretty sure the HD Loader only boots when you use its disc, otherwise other games don't bother checking the hard drive.

So true, in fact I'd say more like 3 or 4 times as many games. In fact I'm pretty sure that at least in Japan they are still going to produce the older style PS2 for those wanting a HDD capability.

Exactly if you really wanted full advantage of the HD loader you wouldn't bother with Sony's overpriced drive.
 
Well, I did not pay for my HDD, since I was a FFXI beta tester.

That doesn't mean that, after accounting for a Japanese PS2 and HDD, I got a good deal. :grin:

I have a 120 GB unused; it's just a matter of getting around to using it. If I were to have bought my FFXI at msrp ($99.99), I would have spent $20 more for the 120GB drive, which would give me 3000% more space.

Where did you read this? One site I found said it would not work with external drives.

yea hdloader is the only reason to own the hd...and taht barelys a reason at all since the sony package is only 40gb. You will fill that up quick.

anyways the sims urbz in the city also uses it so thats 1 more.
 
I wouldn't pay $100 for it regardless, I got it for $60 not as cheap as I would like. Since they will hit clearance soon anyway. Just wanted to start using it sooner.

Oh, sorry for the confusion. You can install games on your internal HDD by hooking it up to your PC. If you get an external exnclosure (case for using internal HDDs as external drives), hook it up to your PC through USB, you can use a program to install games from disc (yes, disc images are installable as well, but I'm not encouraging that).

Since your PC doesn't run a region check, you can install games on the HDD if they are Japanese games.

After installing to your heart's content, you place the HDD back in the internal HDD slot in your PS2, and boot up as normal using your disc. The games you installed from your PC will be available for play; mod free imports!

Sorry for the confusion; I haven't read much about the PC program, but I'm sure that plugging it into a frree IDE slot works as well. Shame I have a laptop.

Are there any new titles that are going to take advantage of it? I know ESPN games will play video highlights if you have it. That's the only one I know of other than FF.
 
It's not really something that they advertise. so unless it's specifically doing something big by using the HDD I doubt anyone will know untill they actually BUY the games.
