Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I should try getting back into the Atelier series....I kind of jumped off the ship with Totori. I guess I just don't like them as much as I felt the Atelier PS2 series (other than 3...which was average) and Mana Khemia were just funner. I would love another Mana Khemia.
I jumped on with Totori. I like the series but I just hate the time limit. I have to use a guide just to get my the time limit.

Need a physical release for Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds. Make it happen LRG (For the record, they actually are interested).

Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness’ PS4 Gameplay Brings Back the Vibe of the Anime

The gameplay is quite classic visual novel-style, but it’s broken up by puzzles and interaction with your smartphone (even if those aren’t shown here). The game will be released in the west this fall for PS4, PS Vita and Steam

I must be a terrible person then, cuz the only persona I've actually beaten was dancing all night...I did get through half of P3 though.

(I've only beaten Persona Q...)

Bad idea waiting to start with Persona. The random encounters annoyed the crap out of me.

I have beaten a couple SMT games though, so there's that.

Indeed, although yes, there has been a limited edition with PB:BG in Japan only, the disappointment I've heard/read that, even though there was a game case, the game itself came inside of it was a DL code, no cart, sad.

oh really? ! i would be down for that.
One of their guys was in Japan recently and he held two improtu meetings. So. There is a chance. They want it too. lol.
Yeah, hopefully Limited Run games can deliver, I mean, sheesh, there was another issue of another digital only fighting game, and that was the Vita version of BlazBlue: CPE, digital only in JP, elsewhere (US/EU) got a physical copy (well, due to the filesize, the Gallery/Story extras are free DLC). And since I'm a nut for Phantom Breaker either way, hopefully this would be good.

Yes. Much like the first version of Ducktales Remastered and that one Tomb Raider game.

I jumped off the Atelier ship shortly after I got on. Bought Rorona Plus, but I didn't care for the time limit (even if it is generous).
I have rorona meruru and escha/logy in my backlog. Played ayesha and didn't really care for it since its poor on every front. People say its slice of life alchemy so you shouldn't expect much but I've seen slice of life animes and they are far more interesting than rorona which had barely anything story or character wise.

People who don't play the Atelier games because the time limit must have also skipped Persona 3 & 4. Shame.
pfft there is no time limit in p3 outside the optional tartarus rescues in p3p. now p4 you have a time limit in. but only for the first 5 dungeons.

Haven't played 3, but I have played 4. Difference there is that P4 had me hooked pretty early.
it helps that p4 has more character interaction and jpn school sim stuff.

Sure there is. Certain things happen on certain dates and the game ends on a certain date.

Corona Blossom eh.....I love me some visual novels and the grisasia games have been nice so far (can't wait to play the rest). You better believe I want that adult content on PC. 18+ for lyfe.

certain things happening on certain dates doesn't make it a time limit. as for the game it only ends when you want it to vs atelier ending because there's no way to avoid using up time.

Should have become a franchise. It was too good to end with just one game. Oh well.
I loved the dialogue written for that game. Gameplay was really rough and dated but eh what can ya do for one of the first games on the ps2. I wish atlus could do a remake or something some day. Hitting on Rosalyn was the best part.

Let me rephrase. You have to have things (like social links) done by certain dates. I guess if you never went to sleep the game would go on as long as you wanted.

I think dubs usually sound worse in trailers than in the actual game, Cold Steel is a notable example that comes to mind. Personally, I thought the dub in VLR was excellent, I'm expecting no different for the third game.
I could listen to "Sigggggyyyy! Phidoooooo! Wasuuuuuuup?" over and over again.

Mine as well. Early for them to do that and yes, very unusual as they usually give you a few days notice.

Atelier Sophie is coming to America June 7th, 2016 on PS4 (Physical) & PS Vita (Digital)

June 7th, nice. I was hoping it wouldn't be 6+ months out from the announcement. It's shortly after my birthday too. Also glad to see that it will be PS4, but I pretty much already knew it would be since it was released on it in Japan. At this point I can nearly say goodbye to my in-room heater of a PS3.

Damn, that's a slick looking CE.
It isn't live on NISA's store yet, but it'll be $99.99: http://gematsu.com/2016/03/atelier-sophie-coming-west-ps4-ps-vita-june

NIS America will produce a $99.99 limited edition of the game including:
  • A copy of the game (PS4)
  • Set of 5 5″ x 7″ beautiful mini art prints
  • 40″ x 26.8″ cloth poster
  • 2 Disc Original Soundtrack featuring 38 tracks of original music from the game
  • 48-page hardcover art book, including illustrations and sketches of the characters, creatures, and background art of the game.
Far too expensive for my tastes, especially since I have yet to even play Rorona Plus.

I will have to think about it at that price, was hoping for like $84.99. If it were on Amazon and I could get it for 20% off with release date shipping I wouldn't question it.

If it included even a digital copy of the Vita version, I'd consider it, but when I can buy BOTH the PS4 and the Vita version for that price to take advantage of cross-save, I'm not going to bother. Especially since I haven't even finished Totori...

Anyone else extremely irked that they are not doing a Physical edition LE on VITA  here in NA after the lats Atelier game sold so well?

At least Tecmo Koei said they are talking to Limited Run Games. Maybe we will get it through them.
