Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

I have an Xbox one, except now that I moved and have no room for Dance Central. I am probably going to get rid of mine once I stop being lazy and post it on a sell group on FB and CL.

Which ones are the most rare? I feel like I have every Atlus PSP game. Monster Kingdom was super hard to find in person; I looked for AGES in used game stores then I found two in one day. Haven't seen it since.

From their reply, sounds like Hexyz Force, Crimson Gem Saga, Persona 1-3 are getting reprint

 
Talk about random but I just a got second copy of DoAX3 in the mail. Back a while ago I had originally ordered it from Ricedigital but then canceled when Playasia lowered their price and there was a $5 off coupon. So yea thanks to person that mentioned it was up on RD then the person who mentioned the price drop lol.

Definitely up for UMDs here. The GS closest to my work still has a ton of them, but they tossed almost all of the cases.  :headache:

Wish NIS would reprint some, I'd love to get hold of a complete ZHP Unlosing Ranger for a reasonable price.

I'm sure this is a hype week for a lot of people. Last week Campus Notes, a Visual Novel released on Steam without ample warning so it didn't get added to last weeks release list. We're still sitting on four Visual Novels that will release in "April", but hopefully we'll get at least a weeks notice. I very much doubt it though. I'm also wondering how many people use this threads wiki, but I guess it's more curiosity than anything. In the mean time I should probably go fix a few unmarked digital platform releases.

- Comment: You get minor starting bonuses in the form of items for beating certain requirements in the demo.

- Comment: Technically not Japanese, but I figure it's popular enough and would probably get mentioned in this thread anyways.

- Comment: Pretty sure I saw a yandere with a chainsaw in the preview images. Probably also not Japanese, but it's not really worth double-checking.

- Comment: What the hell is this? Released last week and is published by PLAYISM, but it received a nice audible 'What the fuck?' from me, so I'm adding it in this week.

Apparently the homebrew community fixed the Code of Princess framerate issues on the n3DS.

 
Are the Estival versus dlc characters worth the money besides Ayane (she has been a favorite of mine since DOA2)? The dlc all together is a lot of cash.

Going off the difference in ratings, even gestures and hand signs are really different from culture to culture. For instance, in Star Ocean 5, when you first meet Relia, Miki pats her head to reassure her. In Japan that a reassuring motion, like what you do to little kids. But in some countries it was not taken that way, so that’s been changed in the game to fit the different cultures. It was picked up during QA, and we changed it.

I find things like this disappointing, not because of any "moral" reason, but because part of the reason I enjoy experiencing media from other cultures is because I find the cultural differences interesting. I want to learn about those differences, and it's sad to me when that opportunity is taken away from people because of "localization" like that.
 
Code of Princess might be playable with a better framerate and resolution but it was a pretty terrible attempt at a Guardian Heroes spritiual sequel on 3DS

It's gonna be pretty embarrassing if it isn't even better than indie offerings on Steam but I'll probably give it another shot

I got the Ace version but I saw the notification that all the online activities on the server has been closed, so really no rush to play it now lol since the multiplayer stuff still works lol ...though it is super cute & adorable, so far I only have 1 friend on my friend list that has the Ace version =(

 
are people really still complaining about star ocean 5. I mean who wants to look at her panties when we have the witch's booty to look at. The change is so minor that I don't really so the fuss.

Are people really still not understanding that this isn't just about what's changed but the pathetic reason for doing it and the lame excuses given?.. This started with a slippery slope but we've now at a full nose dive.

Looking at the new Star Fox I am not that impressed. It looks like they took the 64 version, slapped on better graphics, new levels and called it a day. I know it's hard to do Star Fox but this could of been more.

As for the whole Star Ocean 5 controversy, I am not totally outraged by it because I kinda understand where they are coming from, but they really need to do fuck ing to better localizations. I want to play Star Ocean 5 as it was intended not changed for the west.
