Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I miss playing and raiding in FF14 but definitely don't miss the elitist, yet shitty, playerbase.  It was really hard to find high-end raiders in that game.

Neptunia VII is $11.99 for Plus members: https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/games/megadimension-neptunia-vii/cid=UP0031-CUSA03133_00-GAME000000000000

That's pretty crazy considering it came out only four months ago.

EDIT: Omega Quintet is $3.99, equally crazy: https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/games/omega-quintet/cid=UP0031-CUSA01915_00-GAMEOMEGAQUINTET
Thanks for the heads up. Physical copies of Nepnep VII is still lingering around $45+. I own and played Omega Quintet, and it's going to be a hard one to drudge through. Reminds me too much of Fairy Fencer F..

Now I feel really stupid for buying Omega for $12 last time it was sale, thinking such Japanese title won't get discounted to much lower than that.

I didn't even enjoy the game that much, and such a pain to get the true ending that I gave up on it.

I payed about $20 for my physical copy. I want to play it and beat the game, but every time I fire it up, I look at all the games that are so much better that I just can't put the time into it. The same thing happens whenever I try and complete Fairy Fencer f. The game was very forgettable for me. All that's left is the grind leveling and I just don't have it in me.

Megadimension Neptunia VII, however, I'm quite excited to play when I get home.

Yeah I had to power through it to some degree, really wish the concert mode was more fleshed out, they are idols after all. At least it has Japanese voices. I don't recall it required a lot of grinding though, I beat the last boss without intentionally grinding too much.

It kind of bugs me that they are using Zelda: Breath of the Wild to move a bunch of NX units. The new unit might not otherwise warrant a purchase for a couple years. Nintendo also profits off their hardware. They haven't done anything to earn day1 supporters.  The game was also supposed to be a flagship title and a reason for buying a Wii U.

I feel lame for buying Omega Quintet for like $40ish....for IFI games, unless I want to play them right away...I will wait for sharp decreases in price. I know I will pick up Neptunia VII at least.

I started doing that after ReBirth 2. I snagged the LE for it and called it quits. So anything else released by IFI games gets put on the back burner for at least 2-3 months.

I can't remember the specifics of Re;Birth 1's difficulty and grinding compared to Megadimension Neptunia VII, but I do recall thinking VII was really easy. I don't think it required grinding. I tend to kill most enemies in an area as least once when I play normally, though.

If I thought Re;Birth1 was boring and way too grind-y (I know Neptunia games practically thrive on grinding), would I enjoy Neptunia VII?
I've never played any of the Rebirth games, but I've played the original trilogy and gotten halfway through Neptunia VII, so I'll try my best to give some actual useful advice. It seems to have the least grinding in the series, mostly since the game is split into thirds, and even in those thirds, there's splitting of narratives for different characters. Makes it a lot less useful to grind and over level characters since you start with another character (with new reset stats) for every story transition. It also seems a lot more exploration-oriented and less of, "go back to the same dungeons and grind." Once you unlock the next stage, the EXP from the new area is significantly higher. I never made it to the last third of the game though, and since I assume all characters gather up then, there might be more grinding towards the end. But definitely a huge improvement over previous titles.

Edit: The series spans multiple genres, and the only thing in common is the story and characters. Unless you played the other games and absolutely hated Neptune, and dislike cute girls, I would say give it a try for $12.

A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV Announced by Square Enix for PS4 and Xbox One

The game is a retro-style action-brawler game set thirty years before the main game, and the protagonist is much younger King Regis. The game will be available for PS4 and Xbox One as pre-order exclusive bonus for Final Fantasy XV from select retailers. For instance in North America it will be available from GameStop and EBGames.

Well, what they are doing is nothing new, and they have done it before. It really sucks for those Wii U owners who have to wait for what is likely the best reason they even bought the unit, so they can make it NX ready for launch, but what can you do?

I would think that most users will keep the Wii U, buy Zelda there and take a wait and see attitude on the NX. But most "N" diehards really seem to love the abuse they get, so they may buy the NX and Zelda anyways.

I still never bought a Wii U, as it never hit my $200 and under price point, but I bought one for my son a few holidays back, so I have access to one if need be. The Wii U was the first "N" system since the NES that I didn't buy at launch, or import before the US release, and the NX will be more of the same unless I see some super duper line up of launch games, which I just don't see happening.

I think buying any console at launch is not my style. I still rememeber buying the PS4 at launch (in which mine was a brick....and i got one about 5-6 days later), and just not liking the launch games really at all. I was stuck playing Knack and really didn't want to play CoD and Battlefield 4 was a mess at launch. I'm waiting till I can land a WiiU for maybe $100 or so....$50 is my preferred buy for it though.

I think being an early adopter is just painful enough. Now buying a system after it's been out about a year and has a BF bundle with maybe a hot game at the time....I like that!

If I see some substantial improvement of quality and/or experience for the NX version of Zelda compared to the Wii U version, then I'll get it for NX.

But if the changes are minimal, then I'll just stick with the Wii U version.

Persona 5 is looking great. I'm guessing they didn't want to put it up for show because it's still entirely in japanese.

Just so everyone knows, Odin Sphere is amazing. I've been playing it pretty much non-stop since I got my copy. I pre-ordered FF15 CE on Amazon so hopefully I get my FF14 items. Even though I'll probably be quitting 14 very soon. 3.3 has been out for a week and I've only logged in once.

Same. It makes me wish there was some news on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, but hopefully at TGS.

I feel bad for poor Undead Darlings Game. Kickstarter looks like it's going to fail again. Needs a bit less than $22,000 in 3 days to go.

Link

I will buy it whenever it gets published though....
A lot of Japanese purists hate one of the project leads because of localization choices made with Neptunia and Atelier so it isn't being spread around as enthusiastically as other gaming related crowdfunding.

You'd have to cancel your order and place another one. Too much trouble unless you really wanted the items.
Oh, that sucks. I have double prime discount on that order. I'll switch my pre-order for SO from Best buy to Amazon then :)

Edit - Just ended up cancelling and reordering my Pycho-Pass LE and got my code right away.

Sorry, but if you buy a console for a game that isn't out yet and you regret your purchase, then you only have yourself to blame. Why buy it if the only game you want to play isn't out yet? There are plenty of great games on the WiiU, but if those can't justify your purchase, then what's the point?

Buying a console in anticipation of a game or games if foolish. Wait till the game (or several games) you want to play is out and then make your purchase.

CAG or not, that just makes sense.

Edit: Oh yeah, finally got my One Piece Burning Blood pre-order code (it was added to my order on the bandai namco site). I contacted the store support, when they didn't respond, I contacted the regular support, which got the store to follow up. Hopefully this means that they're going through and updating everyone's orders.

Yeah that low res Iphone video got me more excited than the 4 Major E3 shows combined.

I can't wrap my head around how SONY REFUSES to show this game to the masses... it's so stupid!

Ya'll better hope that Asia somehow gets an Eng Sub release for those who want the JP Audio.
They'd be crazy not to release one. If they thought the number of anime tiddies sold with DoAX was a lot, they'll break the bank with a P5 release.

I'd say it'd be great if it ate into the sales of Atlus USA's release, but outside of P5 I really don't know what else I want to buy from them at this point. Maybe P5 Platinum 4K edition in two years.

I'm not sure who you're quoting, or if you're just saying this in general to what others have said in the past. However, I'll give my insight on this. I think many that do this, like myself, have several games they want to play that have already been released. The issue is it isn't their most anticipated game. But since it is supposed to come out, they get the system earlier and they can play the other games first to tide them over. In addition, if you found a deal on a console, why not go for it? It is the same way with games and how everyone is backlogged, but would still buy cheap games. It may not get cheap again (and in the case of the Wii U system, there hasn't been any deals recently for it that I can recall, even on BF), so you go for it.

And at least for me, if there were some games (about 10-15) that I wouldn't mind playing but aren't MUST haves, I would feel my purchase wouldn't be totally justified if that was all I got. Every single playstation system thus far I have beaten at least 30 games on it. Some 100. So I can relate that the purchase may not be justified in the case of the Wii U thus far. On the flip side, there would also be a few select games that if they were made, I would buy a system strictly for that game alone and felt it would be worth it.

With the exception of a few games, most games usually come out within a year or two after it gets announced. For Zelda, it definitely would have been out already or close to release if the NX was never announced.

Now if someone bought the system on release with little to no games with just high hopes, then yes, you have a point and I feel the same way as you. But the main issue for me is I would have never thought the Wii U would get abandoned so early in its life cycle and get screwed. Nintendo didn't even try to sell more units. Keeping the price high with very little announced games, and then go off essentially killing it off by creating a new system doesn't sit too well with me.
