Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

So I watched the 15 minutes and I cannot accept the chaos area being called the quirky cloud. I mean I don't mind each area is a cloud but they should have kept all the area names for the most part lol.

I mean I'm still going to get it on my PS4, I'm not really focused on getting trophies until I can play English because of those stupid item requests.

On a side note, I made multiple pre-orders on Amazon and haven't gotten my codes for FF14. I know on the Amazon page is says 2 business days but  I've been hearing people getting it right away and some not getting it at all.

I think buying any console at launch is not my style. I still rememeber buying the PS4 at launch (in which mine was a brick....and i got one about 5-6 days later), and just not liking the launch games really at all. I was stuck playing Knack and really didn't want to play CoD and Battlefield 4 was a mess at launch. I'm waiting till I can land a WiiU for maybe $100 or so....$50 is my preferred buy for it though.

I think being an early adopter is just painful enough. Now buying a system after it's been out about a year and has a BF bundle with maybe a hot game at the time....I like that!
I will never regret buying a Vita at launch even if paying $100 for a memory card left a sour taste in my mouth. Having portable Ninja Gaiden was worth it.

I wish Shantae would release sooner. It's looking good at least.
I've been a huge fan of WayForward's work for quite some time. I already pre-ordered this game for the Vita before this video came out. Now I'm that much happier that I'll be playing this game in a few months time.

Yeah that low res Iphone video got me more excited than the 4 Major E3 shows combined.
I can't wrap my head around how SONY REFUSES to show this game to the masses... it's so stupid!
Makes sense to me. E3 is more focused on the mass American audience. No way Sony would show a trailer fully in Japanese (not counting the Morgana intro) with their limited time.

The people in this thread will be way moreally excited by TGS than E3 anyways.

I'm to the point where we get any game whether its a NA, EU, or Asian release with English, I'm extremely happy. I don't think I have the brain capacity to learn Japanese to the point where I could import games, or else I would and probably be writing out translations for folks who want to play them...and ultimately mocked and flamed for not doing it perfectly.

Double cross post from the Vita thread. First of all Shiren Vita is back in stock at BestBuy...glad since I don't have Amazon Prime anymore...

Shiren for Vita apparently came back in stock at BB, after being unavailable for preorder for the last month or two:

http://www.bestbuy.c...1&skuId=5046401

Either BB increased their inventory numbers, or someone canceled a preorder opening it up for ordering. I suggest that if anyone wants this game from BB, get your order in soon. BB has been reducing their preorder quantities for more obscure games, for example Odin Sphere for Vita sold out almost immediately and is not available at all anymore.

The second is Dungeon Travelers 2 and Lost Dimension Vita/PS3 down to $19.99 New/ $17.49 used at Gamestop.

Dungeon Travelers 2 Gamestop

Lost Dimension Vita Gamestop

I liked Dungeon Travelers 2 quite a bit, and a lot played Lost Dimension so they can comment on it, but decent prices nonetheless.

Agreed. I think I may be getting a bit less interested to learn Japanese, mainly since i'm still practicing my Spanish and such, but i'm grateful for how many things come over now. Also region free gaming is beautiful. People are just very entitled and i'm frankly glad I have so much to choose from that I can't possibly get it all, since it's a lot of money. This isn't like the 90s where stuff localized was far and in between and the number of niche games was quite small. People have a choice to buy or not, but frankly I'm just happy I have so much choice, and I will buy Persona 5 Valentine's Day 2017 because I want to play it in English regardless if there is Japanese voices as DLC or it just has a dub. I just want to play it and am patient enough to know there is so many games coming out, it's not worth crying over a few.

Not to mention the need to either purchase foreign hardware, or void your warranty by modding your domestic hardware. Silly kids these days don't know how easy they have it. Or how cheap. Whining over obscure games not dropping under $20. They've never lived in a world where hardware cartridge production constraints kept the retail price of some games above $90, and the after market prices were higher still.

They'll all be getting a taste of it in a few years, as physical media starts to phase out, and certain modern physical releases start getting increasingly scarce. But they'll still have the option of low-cost digital alternatives. Just no idea how good they have it, or how relatively affordable the modern gaming industry is. It's all this competition.

Everyone older than you is out of touch, everyone younger than you is ignorant.
Yeah, I'm a grandpa, sitting on my porch, waving my walking stick at all those rambunctious kids with their rap music and scooters.

Not really, but it certainly does feel that way sometimes. Just a consequence of getting older. Even as a fairly tech-savvy adult, it is impossible for me to keep up with trends in modern social media. But I still can't help but marvel at what kind of world the kids these days are growing up in. It's something I think of every time I pull a game out of my Vita. The memory cards in the original PlayStation were twenty times as large as the Vita's memory card. The average NES or SNES cartridge towers over the diminutive Vita carts. My PSTV is miniscule compared to any of my older legacy systems, and yet it is obscenely powerful and feature-rich when I hold it up to those dinosaurs.

I'm glad you realized that I was including myself and everyone else in that comment and not just taking pot shots at people here.  I was actually contemplating editing my earlier post to try and clarify that.

I have no doubt that some of the CAG-ers around here are youngsters. You don't have to be an old fuddy-duddy in order to be interested in being frugal. Young people like saving money too. And for a lot of them, it's more a matter of necessity than just common sense.

I have a day-job that affords me a decent amount of disposable income. For me, the occasional full-price game is not that much of a stretch. More often than not, shopping for deals is more about the thrill of the hunt than any actual need. This is compounded by the fact that my pack-rat obsession with collecting and cataloguing games has left me with an obscene back-log of high-quality titles.

But some of the younger CAGs on these forums have to scrimp and save just to afford a few titles a year. For some of them good deals dictate which games they will or will not play. I don't want to dump on the younger generation too much. Yes, many of them have it better than they realize. But hard financial times and higher unemployment also means it's not always as rosy as I would perhaps point out.

It is important to maintain a certain degree of perspective. This helps no matter what age you are.

Oh man, I had a flashback on buying Final Fantasy III (6), and Chrono Trigger for SNES. If I remember correctly, they were $79.99 with tax. That's a rough amount for someone who's in their early teens to save up. I wasn't part of a family who could buy games so freely. I do remember one of the happiest days of my gamer life is when I learned about Roms, and Emulators along with the subbing community. Those guys were the unsung heroes of the JRPG gaming world in the 90s/early 2000s.

I want to say FFIV was 89.99 new at Electronic Boutique.

I'm actually wondering if phasing out physical media will cause game prices to increase, or, at least, not fall as rapidly or as low.

One of the reasons for manufacturer price drops on physical games is to beat out the secondary market. But with digital media, re-sale is not possible so the only way to get the game is from the manufacturer themselves. They will have more control over the pricing and less incentive to lower it.

Good, I am glad that some other people get it. This makes me happy.

Exactly. Most importantly, let's also not skimp over the fact that $80 in 1995 is $126.39 today.

Young (or sometimes just immature) people have no idea how good they have it these days, or what it was like to be a JRPG enthusiast in the cartridge days. It involved multiple trips to the video rental store every week to try to snag the popular game you wanted to play for a rental and then you had to no-life it for one or two 3-5 day rentals. Then if you returned it and rented it again another time some choad would have overwritten your only save file and leave the other two empty. Or else you could save your allowance or wages for a couple months and buy that sweet Squaresoft RPG at a premium price, and it's already a year or two old.

Everything is so much better these days which young people can't seem to appreciate. Our systems are region free. You can import anything and play it on your PS4 or your Vita. You can easily go onto social media and find a store to buy or import anything you'd like and it will come directly to your house with a minimal shipping cost. There are several online retailers to which everyone has access, allowing a degree of price competition previously unseen. Retailers have to undercut each other in order to stay competitive. More traditional/cultural JP games are getting localized than ever before. Many of which eventually become available digitally for just a few dollars. We have so many choice and options. We get discounts on new releases with GCU or Amazon Prime. Games get major price slashes just weeks after they release. It was just ten years ago that a B2G1 sale on new games would have been unheard of. Hell, you can even sometimes make money selling games BACK TO THE RETAILERS. Even a broke-ass gamer can practically game for free with things like humble bundle once they invest in a system. The truly sad thing is the majority of "gamer" chumps spend their time playing these dogshit freemium phone games BLEGH.

It's a great day to be a gamer. Every year is better than the last. People can take their censorship crying and shove it. Those games never even used to exist. We have so much to choose from that it doesn't matter if certain aspects of some games are not to your liking.

I didn't have a console when I was a minor, but I remember buying the Lord of the Rings games on floppies.

As for Persona 5, I'd be very glad to buy the JP version if they would add English subtitles, instead of adding JP audio as a DLC.

Edit: Yay, my profile finally updated to not be the shitty TMNT game.

Complain about censorship all you want but most of those outfits remain very fanservicey

I'd buy an Asia/Eng Sub Persona 5 only so I don't have to wait until Feb to play it.

I'd probably still end up double dipping anyways. Since I know Atlus will do their shotty half audio bullshit

and leave you to read half the game without any audio. Which is why it makes even less sense to remove the JP audio

or provide it via download.

Anybody who wanted Persona 5 in Japanese would have ordered it from Japan already so they could have it in September this year. Young people just prefer to act entitled and complain.
I'm already doing that. If Atlus USA has a JP audio track (still don't believe it) then maybe I'll buy it used and play it that way next year.

So if they do what you want you still won't support them?

Seems like they are just wasting resources if they try to make it happen.
Thousands are waiting to buy that game regardless of when/how it's released. I am the minority in this, and I've supported them for well over a decade at this point so it doesn't really matter what I do. What they should really be afraid of is undubs and fan patching if the PS3 version makes it over.

hard to say short term maybe but long term they still want sales an are competing with other games on the market for are money short term an long term.

think the biggest thing their focus on now an if it was ever digital only is dlc an season passes, since no matter were we the consumer get the game it money you can count on.

same. If it was simple enough to put translations into games and I knew japanese I would do it in a heart beat for both myself and others.

pfft a few years. try a few decades at the earliest. physical media is definitely not going anywhere right now. Especially when there are few internet service providers and the majority of them suck.

I have no doubt that some of the CAG-ers around here are youngsters. You don't have to be an old fuddy-duddy in order to be interested in being frugal. Young people like saving money too. And for a lot of them, it's more a matter of necessity than just common sense.

nods. though being unable to afford buying many games isn't exclusive to the young. nor is unemployment for that matter. I think what bothers me most about young people is that their vocabulary mainly includes "like and um uh". Everytime I sit through someones conversation and they use like 15 times in the same sentence I want to smack them with a dictionary. :wall:

Everyone older than you is out of touch, everyone younger than you is ignorant.
They typically use the trendy word "entitled" now, instead of "ignorant". Because, if you disagree with anything or feel something is substandard in any way, and voice your opinion--gasp--it's automatically an "entitlement" thing.

Apparently, it's best not to argue, never disagree. Surrender independent thought. Conform. Unless it differs from their opinion, of course. In which case, you have an entitlement problem.

well that article was dumb. Whats hilarious is there were numerous dq games and the majority of them like ff wern't localized until late into the series. General main complaint I have seen is the writing is painful to read in titles like 9.
I would say that Dragon Quest games aren't as popular over here because it only had one game released during the SNES-PS1 generation when JRPGS were really coming into their own. That's one of the reason's some of us old guys prefer DQ over Final Fantasy. We only got 1 FF on the NES, but 4 Dragon Warriors. Plus, the games trickle out now, one game per console generation increase your market presence.

I think what I'm saying is if ENIX has released the DWIV remake on the PS1 like they were supposed to the world would be a better place. Yes, I'm still bitter.
