Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Just watch Flip Flappers instead, they got 1 episode where they do Voltron better than Voltron ever could.
Flip Flappers is so good

Regarding Voltron I thought it was alright. The good guys and bad guys hype up Voltron to be some amazingly badass thing, but Voltron always struggles in anything it does and never does anything that matches the hype.

Nope, the paperwork was addressed to me. I also just checked my order confirmation and the current listing and they've since changed their name on Amazon (Current on top, e-mail on bottom)

The biggest dig is that my order was actually only $5.99 + $3 shipping

AND they currently have it available on Rightstuf for $13.49
Ah, yeah that's the same company. Well, I'm sure there's a reason, but still looks bad. Sorry that happened =/

I don't follow this thread so often so sorry if this has been covered. I just installed soundhax on my 3ds so I can try some import games. I've since ordered Theatryhthm Dragon Quest and have been recommended E.X. Troopers. Is there a list or resources for English friendly import games for the 3ds?

I just watched the first episode of that new Voltron, and I thought it was OK. I'll for sure watch some more episodes and see where it goes.

I preferred the original in regards to team finding out about Voltron, and then having to find the lions. This new one seemed a little rushed in that regard, but not bad.

"I don't read this thread but help me pirate games"

while briefly on the topic of import 3DS game I have considered getting a Japanese 3DS eventually. Anyone ever try Stardust Amazoness, the dungeon crawler, by any chance? Was it import-friendly enough without knowing Japanese?

Same question for the 3DS Culdcept game.

Honestly there are enough English games that you haven't play to go through the trouble of playing a Japanese game if you care about what is going on.

Pretty heavy week for larger niche releases. I know I'll be playing Berseria, but I imagine most everyone else will be playing something else. The Chinese New Year Overwatch event starts this Tuesday as well, which I'll post once it goes live and I have pictures of the new skins.

Other stuff that released without warning last week that are all on PC/Steam:
- The Legend of Dark Witch 2 (魔神少女エピソード2) (Action Platformer)
- Anime! Oi history! (Adventure?)

Same question for the 3DS Culdcept game.
I was thinking about getting a Japanese 3ds also, and if you want to download games/dlc from the eShop then that is the way to go. But if you just want to import and play Japanese games, installing homebrew is really easy, doesn't require any specific game or accessories to load, and will get around the region lock.

As for the games, I don't know about Stardust Amazoness, but I might try Culdcept Revolt. Culdcept DS had a big enough following to get a fan translation patch, but Culdcept 3ds (similar rule set to the NA released PS2 version which is one of my favorite games) does not have any translation guides I can find. Culdcept Revolt in the other hand has an English speaking board announcer an even though it was released just 6 months ago, it has a solid English card translation over at culdceptcentral.com.

The biggest travesty in handheld gaming is that they never brought any of the Culdcept portables over here.
Agreed though that really belongs on the big screen.

In other non related news I think I finally completed Da Capo 3's Prologue I believe. It was pretty long and played out fairly normally. It does help I've played the previous 2 games....I think at least playing the 1st helps a bit. I haven't played the previous games in years or watched the anime in years. There is a mass amount of dialogue. I can see why Mangagamer said this is their biggest game yet. So much dialogue in the prologue alone. Pretty good music, graphics and decently fun characters. I really am not sure who to choose for my route. I also get a kick out of the free time in the night music in the prologue. It sounds like some old porn music haha. They do try to explain stuff from the previous games so people shouldn't get too confused. It's really feels like a possible 8/10 or better game. Very slice of life-ish and interesting with the mystery throughout.

Also for anyone playing on Steam....yeah....hope it doesn't cut out a decent amount of stuff. There seems to be more sexual innuendo here than the previous 2 games. Lots of questionable CGS already on the X-Rated version. I'm pretty sure I recommend this version. It's probably a bit better with it all, like the Griasaia games, and this one has interesting situations in douses. All the girls are very pretty and have pretty good personalities. I really hope I choose a good route for the first run through.

Highly recommend Da Capo 3 so far. It's my type of VN (romantic comedy) and it seems to be a very good example of that. Also a random side thought....but I remember watching the Da Capo 3 anime and it being pretty bad. Made it to episode 6 or so....is that worth watching?

Nope. The anime is basically the prologue if I'm not mistaken. The last 2 episodes, if I remember right, touches a bit with how it connects with the 1st Da Capo and that's it.

Yuck...that would be terrible since honestly the prologue is alright....but that wouldn't make a very good anime. I really liked the Da Capo 1 anime...the rest...eh OK.....but #1 really resonated with me somehow.

Nioh is some tough shit. Really liking it, though. Hell of a lot more polished than the last time I played it.
It's pretty rough solo, but if you go in with a co-op partner it's pretty easy. Got to the first boss solo and fought them once before dying and then not even bothering to attempt again (I did fairly well). Went back when a friend asked to try co-op and we just breezed through it, then the twilight mission which while more difficult, it was still pretty easy.

Saw this from a post on IGN. Anyone know what this game is? It's apparently an unreleased PS4 exclusive. Looks like a female lead Yakuza game to me...

Thanks

Nioh is awesome.   A perfect Souls derivative with a much better samurai flavor.   I beat the main mission tonight, but I'm having trouble getting the DLC rewards downloaded.  I see the Mark of the Strong in my attached DLC, but the Mark of the Conqueror appears to be bugged out and not downloadable.  Plus, I can't seem to escape the (impossible) level 13 duel with the samurai in order to make it back to the main map screen lol.  The demo is buggy.

Awesome game though, exactly what I had hoped it would be.  My only minor gripe is that so much junk equipment drops.  Can't wait to buy this retail.  I just wish there was a nice collector's edition.

Kotori!! That sums up my feeling for Da Capo 1 and SS lol.

Nice, was planning to grab it off Jp PSN later but guess I will get it off SG PSN.

There is a purple rarity item in the inventory called, "Himorogi branch." Use that to get back to the map.

If you look at your Nioh DLC under your purchase history on the Sony Entertainment Network Site, it will say you have two DLCs obtained. One is Mark of the Strong and the other is Mark of the Warrior (believed to be Mark of the Conqueror). I don't remember if Sony or Team Ninja said not to worry about it because it will be fixed for the release of the game. The third reward/DLC though reads from the demos save file, so you need to keep the demo installed (Ogress Mask).

And the junk equipment drops are used at the blacksmith for disassembling to gain materials. It's the primary way to obtain the items needed to respec individual equipment traits as far as I know. So long as you lock your good equipment, you can just select all and disassemble them all at once.

Hmm, what if you were a backer (physical tier), but then changed to a higher tier (deluxe box) in backerkit? I guess this quesiton is probably better suited for the LRG thread you linked. :p

Yeah, no. That's a pretty ridiculous PS4 LE price. That better be a figure/statue of good quality. If it was XSeed, I'd probably actually consider it though just because of how much they've done to get Legend of Heroes localized here. Granted I'll be getting the PC version anyways which doesn't have a limited edition, much less a physical edition.

I really wish they'd stop using Blade. I don't find it fun.

Is it bad that i think White Shroud looks like well...a white Kylo Ren?
But Kylo Ren is white.

Just kidding, yes he does indeed. Actually, my first thought was that he looks like the final form of Izanagi.

Also, no steelbook, soundtrack doesn't seem to be in a jewel case, artbook seems small, and the cards don't seem very special, seems more like a $90 CE to me.
