Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

This just strengthens my belief that Tokyo mirage systems has a much better battle system than persona 5. I fight every enemy and then some to grind some cash in persona 5 in merciless mode and I feel underleveled at the boss battles, while I fight every enemy and but no grinding and I feel game has been perfectly balanced for every boss battle and everything is fair in tms lunatic mode.
In merciless mode, EXP gain is halved so you'll definitely be underleveled if you don't grind for a while. TMS doesn't decrease EXP gain on higher difficulties, from what I understand you actually get more EXP on the harder difficulties.

Yeah merciless is very weird because of the 3x damage. All the mobs are easier because the 3x damage is insane, but bosses don't have weaknesses(usually) so it's just a huge difficulty spike at every boss.
I would definitely say hard mode is the optimal difficulty for persona 5. Excessive grinding should never be a requirement.

I just got Birthdays the Beginning Limited Edition. I am gonna put a Unboxing video up on Youtube. I will post the link over in the CE Thread in a little bit.

I decided since this is for niche games I will post link to my Collector's Edition unboxing of Birthdays the Beginning. It just makes sense. I posted it here and over on the CE thread just in case for those who don't check that thread to much. Here is the link.

I would like this post more if I could. Every new picture I see, I become more and more excited.

Re: Story1: Jen-Hsun could've probably just linked something like this about why the partnership was perfect when 'consoles aren't a business' for them.

Re: Story2:

I don't mind delays because I already have way too much to play, but my god Gaijinworks is never on time for anything.

I'm fine with Summon Night 6 delay. There was a 0% chance it was getting bought over Utaware game, as I was only getting 1 game that week.

More like, if you didn't expect a delay from Vic, I have a bridge to sell you.
Heh, exactly. Showed my friend Summon Night 6 back when they opened the LE orders. First words out of my mouth were, only grab it if you are okay with delays. Funny is this time Vic was swearing up and down there couldn't really be delays. Apparently Bamco is involved, and are really strict. That's the reason it is at retail, they demanded it. I still expected a delay :)

I thought it was because they had no other way to offload all those Tegra chips they designed/made for the Shield.
This exactly.

But in the end, it makes sense exactly because of this. AMD simply cannot deliver the SOC with the given power envelope, and Nvidia just happens to have this older generation chip "lying around". Of course, in the world of semiconductors, it is not really "lying around" physically, but the design is finalized, post-silicon debugging tools are already there and the process is mature.

But we can all agree it worked out great for both firms. It worked out great for us gamers too, having a console/handheld hybrid that opens up a brand new way to play.

Played some Nier Automata at a friends house today for about 10 mins & passed by BB picking it up on the way home.

Never been sold on a game that fast before.  :whistle2:

All of my friends have been hyping it up so hard, but I just don't know if I would touch it anytime soon thanks to the huge backlog my school caused me to build this semester. Its definitely on my eventual buy list, but I feel like I'd be better off waiting for the price to go down more

I watched Dunkey's video about it and it looked absolutely crazy though

I liked nier before it was popular! Yet I haven't played automata :x

So I've been making it a point to talk to every npc twice a month, and checking that tv everyday(forgot a few times) in my NG+ run of persona 5. It's quite interesting to see that they do build up all the different cases in the game well before they happen. I like it, it's good world building.

Here is a review I did on Nier Automata back in March. This game is terrific. I finished 2b's playthrough and still have tons left.

https://youtu.be/Kxe_0Yj9Zcw

If I were you I would get this game. Its up for my GOTY. Also I love all the cross over stuff for Gravity Rush 2. You can actually get a free DLC for it that you wear 2b's outfit in the game. That awesome. I think DLC is live this week on Playstation Store.

I liked Nier for Kaine. She too gud.
All the characters in original nier are pretty good. Very interesting story. The only thing holding it back was average gameplay. So it's only natural for automata to be a top tier game with platinum bringing it's A game on the gameplay portion while yoko taro handles the story and the composer returns as well.

I may eventually give Nier Automata a try when it drops in price and I clear out a portion of my backlog. But the gameplay vids give me a strong Drakengard 3 vibe...which is unfortunate, because I can't describe in words how much I absolutely hated Drakengard 3.

The biggest difference between the two is that N:A was developed by a company that knows what an action game should play like.

I'm excited for ribbi rabbi finally coming out but didn't expect a ps4 release as well.
now I'm not sure such version to get.

also Sina Mora Ex was a nice surprise, physical on ps4.

I highly recommend Nier Automata, not even for it's gameplay (which is pretty sick), but mainly for the style and how innovative some of it's mechanics are. The story splits up often and then refills the breaks with other perspectives, so it feels similar to the movie Memento. As for the user interface, almost everything is customizable, from the HUD, to the character build, to weapons/pods. So it's pretty refreshing from other hack and slash games. It takes the best elements from God of War, DmC, and Bayonetta, and blends them with it's own style.

Actually, a bunch of great games from earlier this year like Nier, Persona 5, Horizon, Nioh, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, probably all deserve GOTY, but it'll go to Zelda based on name alone (although it deserves it on merit too.) I think Nier/Persona/Horizon released any other year, like 2016, would easily take it over Overwatch. A lot of them got overshadowed by Zelda and each other, but they all are spectacles of gaming.

this year has been expensive, but that's a good thing.

Perfect time for them to release their final game, pachinko for the Switch.

Pretty much has to be Berseria port, right?
Maybe. There were no new trademarks announced however so that's unusual. Typically there are 3 trademarks and then one ends up being the name they base the new game on. But since they said it was a new game when they announced it it's possible they are just using one of the old trade marks. Rays bibliothica sp? and asteria both came from the same batch as berseria I think. So its possible.

I'm still sad doomsign never got used. Granted that would be locked to side game since D was already used years ago.

With the time soon approaching. What are the chances of Fire Emblem Echoes LE stock showing up or someone selling them for at cost price? I'm probably just going to download it if I can't get ahold of the LE. But I'd really prefer the LE.

Very good, but it obviously depends on how often you check and how quick you are. There were a few people who cancelled theirs already and I know at least one member (I think the CE thread) that was giving their order away for cost plus shipping. And if no one took it, he would cancel.

Anyone know if Underwater Ray Romano: Mask of Deception runs alright on the Vita? Or is the PS4 version much better?
Utawarerumono should be fine on the Vita. It's an SRPG/VN and isn't graphically intensive. This is of course just my own speculation, but I can't see it running poorly on the Vita.
