Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I don't know if anyone cares but even more Princess Evangile W impressions. 2 more routes down and 4 to go. I really like how the game really feels like you're dating "sheltered" girls and the build up in everything is a little slow sometimes, but these characters are pretty awesome. It's quite a positive game after the original had quite a bit of drama. There is drama and twists here as well, but they seem a lot less exaggerated and likely something that would actually come up in a relationship, like trying to get along with parents and preparing for the future. I think it is a little overpriced and should have been maybe $29.99 MSRP, but I'm really enjoying the game a lot and it just reminds that I really enjoyed Princess Evangile, as all the characters are decently written well, and this just fleshes out secondary but important characters and lets you get more story out of the main heroines from the first. I do wish the epilogue chapters were as long as the other characters' chapters, but they're more a bonus and some cute stuff from later on in the relationships.

There's one game that released today on Steam that I forgot to add, but may as well mention it here as I think it would hold some interest here. Slime Rancher came out of early access today on Steam and Xbox One. It's a pretty interesting game focused around ranching slimes, hybridizing them and selling off their shit (yes, literally). There's a demo that can be found on Steam and it's also 33% off making it $13.39. I don't expect it to really be in anymore bundles anytime soon since their launch out of early access had banner space on the front of the Steam store, but the current price isn't bad regardless. The Xbox One version also has a 'try for free' demo, however no sale. Unfortunately they haven't mentioned a single thing about a PS4 version and seem to actively avoid mentioning anything about it

Also, some Stardew Valley Multiplayer info. Its ETA is 2018 unfortunately.

[customspoiler='Article Excerpt']
Hi everyone! I’m the Chucklefish dev who has been coordinating with Eric on localisation, porting and multiplayer for Stardew Valley over the last year. I’ve previously worked on Starbound (the procedural quest generator was my baby), and I’m also developing Lenna’s Inception, another Chucklefish project, on the side.

I’m here with an update for those of you who have been waiting so patiently for news on multiplayer! Now that we’ve pinned down the main technical issues, we know enough to feel confident describing the gameplay you can expect from it.

Shortly after you begin the game, Robin will offer to build up to 3 cabins on your farm. Each cabin will house a farmhand, controlled by one of your friends.

Farmhands can do almost anything the main player can do. They can farm, mine, fight, fish, forage, marry NPCs and take part in festivals. Each player has their own inventory. When a farmhand is not connected, their inventory can be managed through a chest in their cabin.

Certain decisions can be made only by the main player: when to sleep, when to start and end festivals, and whether to side with Joja, for instance.

You won’t need to set up a server to run multiplayer. Friends can be invited onto the farm through Steam. The invite mechanism for non-Steam versions is TBD, but likely to be similar in most cases.

A lot of players have requested player-to-player marriage. It’s an idea we like a lot, and want to make available as a feature. Player-to-player marriage won’t use the mermaid pendant, but rather an alternative method that requires a similar amount of effort to wooing an NPC. We’re still working out what that will be.

Local multiplayer, split-screen and PVP are not planned at this point.

Effort so far has been focused on overcoming the biggest technical hurdle: synchronising multiple games over the Internet. Almost every source file has been touched, and 15,000 lines of code have been rewritten. Retrofitting multiplayer into a game that didn’t have it originally is notoriously hard.

Anyway, that chunk of work is almost complete now and we’re starting to look towards what’s next:

- Implementing the farmhand cabins
- UI and menus
- Events and festivals
- Multiplayer NPC relationships
- Polish, testing and optimisation

We currently expect to be able to start a beta test at the end of the year for Steam users to help us test the game. Mod authors will be encouraged to update their mods during this beta period. Then, in early 2018 we will release it as the 1.3 patch on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Consoles will get the patch too, starting with Nintendo Switch. This will be a bigger patch than usual, so be aware that it will take a while to roll out to each platform.[/customspoiler]

Sounds like they're making the multiplayer very worthwhile and not just some tacked on junk we commonly see. Although no splitscreen and local co-op will be available, which will certainly suck for some people.

With all this Senran Kagura news I may be thinking of Beach Splash....need people to play it with though cause multiplayer by myself is boringggggggg.

Another PSN sale highlight for this week is Ys Origin for $11.99, which is cross-buy (at least if you check out with the PS4 listing; I can confirm that the Vita version is free for me now) and has separate trophy lists for each version.

I'll probably be getting it myself, since I realized that there's only the $70 limited edition, no standard edition, so I'm thinking its gonna be a 1st print run that will sell out like the Onechanbara, Valkyria Chronicles, and Yakuza 0, and I already missed one of those. No point getting it used on AWD either since it comes with LE DLC.

There's quite a few other people on the PSN community that said they are getting it though, a good 5 or so people.

SK Burst is a nice surprise; I've been looking for some time to get the physical 3DS version. Thanks for the news!
ur better off waiting for the remake, but if ur not going to wait, i saw at one of the local gamestops the physical version new(not packaged) on one of the clearance tables, i believe it was under 20$

Burst didn't have a physical release here, but it did in Europe. I'm guessing that was probably Senran Kagura 2

excited for the senran news. will be my first time playing burst also, I hope sk 2 follows.

double glad the anime is getting a second season. I hope we get those anime show specific avatars that jp psn got thou.

  • Lucioball is coming back, but improved. New arena map based on Sydney, Australia.
  • Competitive Lucioball playlist with special spray and an additional top 500 spray
  • Summer Game 2016 Skins will be available at normal skin prices.
  • New Summer Game 2017 Skins will be available at normal event skin prices.
  • Mercy is getting one of Jeff's favorite skins.
  • Roadhog gets... nothing. (It's a joke from the video based on Roadhogs current state)
  • Junkrat, our favorite Australian, is getting an 'awesome' skin.

This is also the first event since the Loot Box changes that reduces the chance of duplicates. Should help eliminate the 6 skin dupes you get for your most hated character.

Eh, wasn't a big fan of Lucio Ball. It was kinda boring, and the XP gain wasn't great either.

Hope the Mercy skin is a bikini costume, and hopefully they won't include the 2016 summer event items in the event loot boxes, since that'll make it even harder to get the new ones.

If the skins are nice, I'll probably play a bit, but the only thing making we want to play is to try out Doomfist, and the new loot boxes. Other than that, Overwatch has gotten really stale lately.

Oh I forgot .hack might get released in japan first and we'll have to wait for a proper localization. It's really looking amazing so far though.

I married Cordelia but man do I not have any interest in Fire Emblem Warriors. It's really just gonna be all Awakening and Fates. I did enjoy Awakening but what a way to spit on your long time fans.

I just saw this indie game on steam. I don't think Draekon mentioned it in the weekly releases or maybe I just missed it.

It at least looks better than Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae.

What I'm curious about is are they going to dub all this new content in vol 4, and who they are going to get to voice it. Since odds are low they will get the original cast to return to reprise their roles considering they wern't willing to do it for symphonia and that game sold more copies than the entire .hack series combined in na alone.

I won $40 in Amazon GCs at work last week, and used them towards my PBS preorder. And no, I didn't tell my coworkers what I spent the GCs on. Lol

Now that Cold Steel III is coming out on PS4 you'd have to think they'd eventually do a re-release for Cold Steel 1+2 PS4 compilation ya?

Doubtful currently, however with the PC ports coming up they really should port that version to the PS4 if they are going to port one. If they port the PS3 versions, I couldn't see them having half of the improvements that the PC version has.

My main concern is that we won't have Zero & Azure translated before Cold Steel III. Since we'll be visiting there and having returning characters from those two games in Cold Steel III. So much is going to get lost on people, just like the Divertissement. All these returning characters from the Sky Trilogy & Zero/Azure Duology aren't going to get any serious character development because they're already well established.

Still pissed they locked the Black Records in Cold Steel II behind NG+. That shit has series wide implications, which makes it even worse.

Let's be fair here: probably 90% of the current interest in Fire Emblem is directly attributable to Awakening and Fats. It's hard to blame them for making a spin-off like this and focusing mostly on where the money is.

Has anyone been able to confirm yet whether the devs actually stole Marie Rose's head mesh for the main character?

Looks like Tales of Berseria PS4 is on sale for $30 at Gamestop, Amazon, and Bestbuy. Wonder if it's another price drop?

Yep, I missed listing it. Sometimes I wonder how many I miss listing from Steam. So annoying to find games there, especially since the tag system is pretty bad.

Doubtful. They're on sale at Steam too for that price.

My friend was the smart one. He's a huge Japanese turn-based RPG fan, and he's been holding off on getting any of the new consoles. He decided instead to stick to his trusty PC. Now, a lot of the best JRPGs are finally showing up on the PC, and he doesn't have to miss out. The PS4 and Vita still have a slight edge when it comes to that style of content, but they are losing ground constantly.

He adds in Turbo Mode which is an awesome addition and it's more than just a simple 'fast forward' button that you'd get using Speedhack in CheatEngine. The game also supports ultrawide resolutions. The other thing I want to mention from this port is that besides adding new voicework to unvoiced lines, they also re-did some voice lines and even in some areas made slight modifications to dialogue. You can see the examples of the prologue here by comparing them (PS3/Vita Version & PC Version - Sara's dialogue regarding the minor dialogue change). They're timestamped YouTube links, so it should take you to the proper point.

Also, wow, does XSeed really suck at marketing. They basically barely talk about most of their releases and just announce them two weeks prior to release outside of the occasional 'We're working on this!' announcement. Not to mention for Cold Steel on the PC they used this on their twitter page which is a horrible representation of the game itself in this case. Xanadu NEXT and Brandish was even worse by basically having non-existent marketing. Sometimes I have to wonder how XSeed turns profit.
