Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Huh, Durante may be helping with the Atelier Arland ports for PC. Good news if true. Time to begin praying.

Oh and unrelated to that, it looks like fan translation for Shin Megami Tensei If by Aeon Genesis has finally been completed. Due to the site it's located on, I don't think I'm allowed to post the link here, but if you google the group name and game title it shouldn't be difficult to find.

Really not a fan of acrylic stands, but the artbook and soundtrack are nice. Poster is a bit too loli for my tastes. Probably gonna pick it up, anyway, because I have a problem =\

What? I don't understand what he's saying in that nor do I get what it has to do with me not being a big fan of loli characters. I am using "loli" correctly when I assume that it just refers to young characters or characters that look young, yes?

Nelke is a big girl.

Atelier Lulua's english website is up already.

Just wondering, have you guys ever seen any good sales on NISA for limited editions that haven't sold out? There's one on the store right now that still has some stock left. I already have the game on PC so I'm literally just buying the LE for the extra goodies. Wondering if I should just bite the bullet or wait and possibly miss out.

I really really really hope these all get physical versions and not the lame "here's a cart with 1-2 games on it and a download slip for the rest" crap that Capcom pulled with RE Revelations and the Mega Man collections.
My assumption is that they'll sell each one separately for full price so you won't have to worry about them doing a collection style. Capcom likes the money from re releasing the same games over and over again too much

If they price them at $19.99 each like they did for RE4/5/6 on PS4/XB1, I'm fine with that. If they go the more greedy $29.99 route, I'll wait for half-off sales.

Fair I should have clarified. I meant full price as in the $29.99 that I feel always is the price of their remasters. Not $60. I'd be okay with a $20 price tag though

Crazy that it's finally come out. For those unaware if... is practically the beginning of the Persona series, leading into Persona 1. At least I've heard so, I don't really know but I look forward to playing it

Two employees left Xseed today. The more well known Tom and Brittany (Hatsuu). They might have focused more on Falcom titles, but Tom was known for not liking any changes during localization.

Tom doesn't really bother me, but it's disappointing that Hatsuu is leaving. She did pretty well as the editor for a good portion of the localized Trails series.

Now where will I go to look for Cold Steel 3 & 4 localization hope. Though is NISA somehow gets Cold Steel 3 & 4, I will probably pray that she gets hired by them to work on it.

Can't wait to buy Resident Evil 4 for the 4th time! (Gamecube, PS3, PS4 and now Switch) ;)

I'm serious. Having that game on a portable would be great.
Yeah, one of my biggest disappointments of the past 10 years, was that the PSP Resident Evil never saw the light of day. As I wanted a quality RE for a handheld, but revelations on the 3DS was a good runners up prize. While I would never use the current NS on the go, as I don't find it all that portable. I do mirror your sentiments of having RE4 on the go, as that's one my all time top 10 games, and having it on the go would give me another reason to play it again(which never gets old BTW).

Game sucks though honestly. The story is nonsensical and feels like a generic school VN mixed with another one. I don't want to spoil the story, but it's stupid. I honestly wouldn't waste money on this, as I regretted the PC purchase after beating it. It's very obvious that the VN had troubled development. It has technical issues, a horrible story, and mismatched game play (the rhythm game is so stupid I did auto on all of them). It's just a mess.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been staring at it on gamestop for a bit now. I rarely skip any retail VN, but with the flood of games atm I was on the fence about grabbing this day one. I'll hold off for a bit and maybe scoop it up at 20 or less since it isn't very good.

It won't be cuz of the Switch Cart Tax. Digital Price would obviously be different.

Yeah, the fact that Sony Japan is also doing censorship of games means all is lost....

Not much we can do as a community, except buying on the platform that doesn't support the censorship.

In terms of English releases though, it becomes a bit more complicated on boycotting Sony.

Like, not buying a localized game seems like a good way to show your discontent toward censorship, but in the end we're just hurting the company that spent time and money bringing the game over at all (e.g. XSEED).

I really hate how sudden Sony has changed.

This isn't my thing, but the Sony censorship is getting out of hand. It's gotten to the point where you literally can only see the character's heads. Something is wrong when the Nintendo version of a game is the less censored version. Not sure what the niche community can do to correct this behavior though...
After all the money we spent keeping the Vita afloat, as soon as it died Sony decided it didn't want the audience at all any more.

Two of XSEED's producers left today, no reason specified for one, the other left to teach in Japan:

If I remember correctly, Brittany in particular was one of the driving forces behind the Trails games, which doesn't bode well for the remaining entries being localized.

She was a big force sure, but not the only one. While being the editor for the Trails game, she wrote a full on reference bible that should still be at XSeed should anybody else take on the series in the future. Also supposedly the last three translated Trails games were actually done by a freelancer who just recently changed his twitter avatar to a Trails character. That character appears in Zero, Azure, & Cold Steel 4. Could also just be a change that they are playing or recently played Cold Steel 4 since it just came out less than a month ago. Hopes and dreams are always dangled by a fine thread.

It's still a sad day for Trails fans regardless.

EDIT: Before Hatsuu, Jess was the lead for the Trails series. Which I think was Sky FC & SC. So this isn't the first time the series has changed hands either. Jess was HProtagonista, the one whos avatar was her wearing a box over her head.

I may have been a bit harsh on Song of Memories, but the regret is real. I do like character designs for the most part though the animation lags the game and animates a bit strangely too. I think $20 or so is a fair price for it....but really there is better VNs even on consoles alone.

Whatever Sony's new policy is, it's hard to think that it had nothing to do with the motivations of these departures. If Sony decides to take a more aggressive approach to altering third-party titles not just in the U.S., but also in Japan, that would mean a lot of issues with XSEED's typical product selections. Onechanbara's remake was the next hot game probably eyed by XSEED, but this suggests they may need to think twice about bothering to release it here.

Hopefully, what we'll see as a compromise will be English versions of these games still being released in their original, unaltered states for the Asia market. At least that way those interested can just import them from stores like Play-Asia or sellers on eBay.

This may mean fewer titles coming out of XSEED in the West. I suppose those games could migrate to the Switch, but I'm unsure the user-base on that system is large enough for XSEED to bother outside of may be smaller titles or digital only games.

The first thing I thought when I read this news was "XSEED must have lost the Cold Steel 3/4 bid." Either way, not gonna lie, I might have shed a few tears thinking about their departure.

Hmm, I wonder then if this recent issue wasn't just a Sony of America thing, but actually from the home office.

Either way, best to just purchase the game(s) on other platforms then.

What's always baffled me about these censorship issues is how much some games get away with and how little others do. For example, GTAV and the God of War series have some pretty prominent nudity, but anything anime-styled is becoming increasingly censored. Is the art style really that big of a differentiator? If anything, I would reason that more realistic graphics would draw harsher restriction on that front.

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, it just seems like a weird double standard.

It still seems quite clear to me that they're looking to not have the system feature High School girls in sexual situations. Japanese anime and games love the High School setting, but it also means the girls are definitely under 18.

fat chance, their is a vn releasing in jp i believe in dec that sony had heavily censored to match their new policy with the switch version less censored and pc version less censored, seems their going world wide with the smaller companies at least

Yup. When they cut content from the JP version to the US version that sucks. But I also don't get all up in arms over "censorship" issues or companies changing their adult content direction. Simply put, that type of stuff isn't always suitable for America or for them doing proper business over here. If you are that hard-up there is an endless amount of free porn to stream on the internet and plenty of other ways to get your jollies off. It ain't like we have it hard these days. Plus you always have the option of importing the JP game if it is truly that important to you.

America's taboo with "underage" sex related stuff isn't going away anytime soon. That's another problem entirely. The issue is not the video game developers that are simply conforming with our laws and societal expectations.

I wonder if 2B is in the season pass, or if she is her own separate dlc. The season pass isn't mentioned in the trailer. I can't think of a fighting game where a guest character wasn't part of the season pass, but not promoting her as part of the season pass is odd.

It appears she’s part of the season pass, based on this screenshot from the end of the video.

i doubt we'd get Kratos since i don't think Bandai will do the exclusive console character thing anymore, unless Sony fronts the bill themselves to produce it.
