Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

TOM has $20 off orders of $50 on select series this weekend, March 6-8: https://otakumode.com/shop/pickup/label-coupons-2020

Series include Fate, Vocaloid, My Hero Academia, Sword Art Online, One Piece, Evangelion, Love Live, Demon Slayer, Persona, and Re:Zero.

GSC is re-releasing Xenoblade 2 Homura and Hikari.

656326.jpg
675897.jpg

They were going for at least 2.5x original price (50k ea) in aftermarket. The re-releases are exclusive to GSC JP, AmiAmi, and Amazon JP. Amazon JP is the cheapest place to get them since they remove Japan tax at checkout and their shipping is cheap. GSC JP is next best as they charge flat rate shipping. Shipping from AmiAmi would be most expensive since these are so big.

Oh, and if you haven't noticed already, expect figure delays due to coronavirus shutting down factories.

Side note, anyone else having fun with TOM's Sega Catcher? I'm at [strike]21[/strike] 23 wins including 2 3 FuRyu Osakabehime's and 8 Kirby's:
segacatcher-wins-kirby-small.jpg
I feel bad for them considering all my plays have been free and every week they send me an EMS package with a shipping cost of at least 2k ^^;

HLJ Spring Sale: https://www.hlj.com/spring-sale-2020

HS bargain bin actually had deals in it, but the HLJ spring sale looks weak.
You got HLJ's site to work? I managed to place orders yesterday and today (never mind the figures, there are some pretty good deals on hobby supplies), but the site's pretty broken at times, with errors and sluggish load times. I've never seen it this bad before, even during a sale.

Can't say much since I haven't ordered from HLJ recently. I have noticed a long delay in page loading where the images show up immediately but the prices take forever to appear, often requiring page refreshing. Their site has always been a bit slow, but this is much slower than usual.

What kind of hobby supplies did you pick up?

^ And I just had my first pre-order in a while ship from AmiAmi (Nendo Rei Ayanami and a Rem prize figure). Guess that's going right back to AmiAmi.

I heard AmiAmi will continue taking payment for orders as they come in stock and hold onto them until they can be shipped. They are also accepting pandemic-related cancellations for orders without penalty to your account.

HLJ has temporarily stopped automatically shipping private warehouse items after 60 days to accommodate countries with no/limited shipping options. You may still get automated warning emails that your 60 days are about to be reached, but just ignore them. HLJ will let us know when automated shipping will begin again.

Good to know; I've got a pretty dense year of pre-orders with them. Thanks for sharing the info.

TOM 8th anniversary sale: https://otakumode.com/shop/pickup/8th_anniversary_coupons

Buy a select item (including a $1 TOM premium reward), get a 50% off coupon for select item. Points cannot be used on the 50% off item, and the list of items the coupon works on seems weak.

Free $8 in TOM points by answering a simple quiz (all answers in their history page): https://otakumode.com/shop/pickup/8th_anniversary_quiz

My TOM premium is about to expire. Although I haven't placed any orders with them lately, I enjoy the daily free play to Sega Catcher, so I'm going to keep my premium going.

HS bargain bin: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/list/360/0/1

Remember there is no SAL small packet right now, so even if you find a good deal, you may lose out paying for expensive shipping.

I talked to AmiAmi about holding my paid orders until SAL is available again. They replied that because other shipping methods (ie the expensive ones) are still available to the US, they are reserving warehouse space for orders from countries where no shipping method is currently available. Looks like I have some expensive shipping coming up >_<

HLJ has a good chart of the currently available shipping methods: https://support.hlj.com/hc/en-us/articles/900000466026

Yeah, I usually look at those sales shortly after they go up, but didn't bother this time. Most of the time, what I like to get from Hobby Search sales are goods with maybe an inexpensive figure or model kit or two, and that's it, but it's not worth it for right now. I'm worried enough about the four SAL packages I've had en route since March, three of them without tracking-- especially since I'll probably be moving soon.

Paid for my first AmiAmi pre-order in a while, so I wanted to give a heads up on the current shipping situation.

If you shipped anything around the end of March via SAL, that package has likely been returned to sender already due to the ongoing suspension of SAL. Each shop is handling SAL returns differently. It boils down to the following possibilities:

1) Refund the order, including shipping cost

2) Hold onto the package until SAL is available again

3) Re-ship using an available shipping method and refund shipping

AmiAmi is offering options 1, 2, and possibly 3. They recently got one of my orders back but haven't processed it yet since they have a flood of packages coming back right now. I'm hoping they will be able to do option 3 and move the contents of the return to another order, refund my SAL shipping cost (AmiAmi points would be fine), and ship again via another method. HLJ is putting returned items back into your private warehouse and refunding shipping. I've heard TOM is only issuing refunds without asking the buyer what they want.

Air Small Packet, Air Parcel, EMS, DHL, and FedEx are still currently shipping from Japan to US. Air Small Packet is similar to RSAL but a little more expensive and faster. EMS is expensive and has been experiencing delays due to being overwhelmed, so instead of taking a few days, it will likely take a few weeks. DHL should still be a speedy few days to the US, according to their website.

For a price comparison, I just shipped two Nendoroids from AmiAmi. My normal RSAL cost for two Nendos is 1590yen. I had to choose between Air Small Packet for 1890yen, DHL for 2170yen, and EMS for 2720yen. I went with DHL for the speed and being not too costly.

FWIW, I had a TOM shipment from the end of March sent back a couple days ago, but I have not yet heard from TOM themselves about its status. I'll keep this thread updated.

I also had a CDJapan shipment from early March that hasn't arrived yet. If I hear about that one being sent back, will also let you all know how that goes.

Good to hear about HLJ. They account for the last two packages from Japan that I'd been waiting on. Don't know what the status is of those yet.

After reading on reddit that TOM simply refunded an order without giving the buyer options, if that is not the outcome you want, I would proactively email them first and let them know what you rather do, either hold for SAL reopening or upgrade shipping.

TOM has a new tag for items in their US warehouse.

They have also posted a notice about recent parcel returns to Japan Post. Key section: If you find that your shipment is returning to us, rest assured that in light of this unique situation we are currently looking into ways to have your shipment be reshipped at no exta cost to you as soon as shipping services resume at Japan Post. Once we get closer to reshipping your order, you'll be receiving an email from us letting you know of the details.

GSC JP is offering 20% off all in-stock figures: https://goodsmileshop.com/en/On-Sale-Now/Available-Now/Nendoroid-Mask-Bonus/c/516
Many older releases included, so you may find something you haven't seen in new condition in a while. Some amazing rare figures were included, but those sold out fast. I missed Nendo Hozuki ;_;

All include bonus Nendoroid Mask... whatever that is.
If I had to guess, probably some sort of face mask, in reference to what's going on.

And hmm, I'm tempted to grab the BotW Zelda to complete my set. I wonder how much the shipping would be.

GSC JP is 2000yen (or $18 if buying in US currency) flat rate shipping.

GSC US is now also doing 20% off on select in-stock figures, including BotW Zelda. I've only used their free pre-order shipping, but I pretended to check out with Nendo Zelda and the shipping was about $11. At $47 + $11 = $58 from GSC US vs 4620yen + 2000yen = 6620yen (~$62) from GSC JP, she would be a little cheaper buying from GSC US and should arrive faster (EMS is slow these days), but that bonus Nendo Mask from GSC JP would be worth the little extra imo. -Edit- GSC US figures also include the Nendo Mask, so that should be the better place to order Zelda.

I have Nendo BotW Zelda and she came out great. Well worth picking up if you're interested.

Oh man. That stinks. Last night, I randomly decided to play that Sega Crane Catcher online. Got a bunch of free points for doing things...played twice, and won a large Kirby toy! Very excited, because I'm apparently 8 years old, but now who knows when I'll get it. Womp womp.

Since DHL is the only shipping method offered by AmiAmi that is still shipping to US, AmiAmi is now willing to hold US orders until more shipping methods open. Contact their support if interested. You will still have to pay for your items as they come in stock.

Haha. I get excited when I win too, even though I usually don't care about the prize. I have the three Kirby's Dreamy Gear plush keychains and three other prizes "shipped". We won't be seeing prizes for a while. Actually, with the suspension of EMS, I wonder what Sega Catcher will do with US prizes since they usually make you ship it within a certain time frame or forfeit the prize. I'm guessing they'll suspend the time limit window until EMS comes back.

I hope so. I already processed the info when I won it a few nights ago. My address is correct, but all in a wonky order. I hope when it finally ships, they figure it out lol

Looks like TOM will be handling things well:

Japan Post has announced that starting 4/24, they will no longer be accepting SAL type shipments, Air mail, or EMS shipments to the United States until further notice. Although their cutoff date is 4/24th, there may be a number of shipments that shipped prior to this date that will be returned or may see significant delays. We are currently looking into alternative shipping methods that would allow us to offer shipments to the United States. This includes reshipments for any items recently returned due to service disruptions at no extra cost to you. Once we have more information, we will share the details with you.

Got an invoice this morning from AmiAmi for three Nendoroids (Asuka, Red Blood Cell, and L 2.0). AmiAmi added back shipping options that are currently not available to US (RSAL, EMS, etc.), but the payment deadline was extended from the usual 7 days to 2 months (end of June). I guess if you pay for those unavailable shipping methods now, then AmiAmi will hold onto your order until they are available.

amiami-shipping.png

I chose DHL again. It was 920yen more than the RSAL I would usually use. Not too bad of an extra charge to get shipping that is still active to US and also extremely fast.

I got two SAL unregistered packages today from HLJ. They were originally shipped out on March 13. Really made my day, especially since I'm moving later this month.

Only waiting on a package from CDJapan now (no figures; just VGM and stationery). That one went out on March 17, also via unreg. SAL. Wish me luck

Also, I ordered figures from Right Stuf for the first time and they arrived this weekend as well. Haven't opened up the parcel yet, but Right Stuf is my main shop for manga and anime, so I'm expecting a good packing job. Their figure prices are merely okay, even during sales, but they have a fair amount of older stuff that's been long sold out at other shops.

A lone EMS package arrived today from Sega Catcher. Sent 4/13, so it's among the earlier of the EMS backup. At least this shows that EMS is somewhat moving.

Cute Waddle Dee plush keychain inside:

Also had a DHL shipment from AmiAmi arrived the other day, again in record speed. Shipped out on Saturday, arrived on Monday. Glad we still have that option for Japan to US shipments.

Is there a way to verify that a figure I'm buying on eBay is legit or not? I know the ones from China that advertise themselves as brand new without packaging are likely fakes, but outside of that, any other good indicators?

There's a few Figmas and Bring Arts figures that were released that I had no idea about and sellers on eBay are a bit cheaper (well, like 10-12%) than other options I'm seeing.

-Check the seller's feedback

-Check if there are known bootlegs of that figure on MFC. It there are, and the seller's other figures also have known bootlegs, then probably fake.

You can post the links here and we can try to help. Can probably ask on MFC too. I guess there's a risk though of people buying from under you when posting a good deal.

Both look pretty legit to me but I honestly can't tell.

I won my item on 4-22, still hasn't shipped, but I have SOME hope...I won a big Kirby, so I'm pretty excited to finally get it lol

I think they look fine. Typically sellers in China will straight up say they're the Chinese version or something along those lines because they don't want to deal with charge backs, like how this one does for example https://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Nier-RepliCant-Gestalt-Kaine-Action-Figure-Bring-Arts-Collectible-Toy-In-Box/254576118602?hash=item3b45eb4b4a:g:3RAAAOSwpBdd7wvw

Alternatively, there are a couple on Mandarake https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1130183443&ref=dos&categoryCode=020102&keyword=nier&lang=en
"Chinese version" is generally a sneaky way of saying "bootleg", but yeah, I don't see that on either one of the other listings. In addition the photos look authentic to me, and the prices aren't too low (which would've been another strong sign of a bootleg).

Still, if Vinny is wary about whether or not they're genuine, then he should pass. Kaine goes on sale every so often at various shops, so if he doesn't want to go the Mandarake route, he could wait for one of those.

True, that is how they usually do it these days.

Both of those listings may be legit. Personally, I steer clear of China and HK based eBay sellers when it comes to figures, especially when a bootleg of that figure exists. Do what you're comfortable with.

I have three Sega Catcher shipments since that recent one came in. One is marked shipped, the other two are waiting. I got a text today that I should be getting a shipment from them via DHL on Tuesday. They must have switched from using EMS.

Sega Catcher will be closing at end of May until Japan's situation improves. TOM Premium members still get daily points until then and can continue winning prizes. Make sure to use up your free points and ship your prizes before end of May.

Is there a website to play Sega Catcher on *without* TOM Premium? I assume so? Can someone link, please?

I love crane games, but don’t really think I’d need TOM Premium. If I could play randomly here and there, that would be fun.
