My bold review and thoughts on each song as I listen.
# PHONER TO ARIZONA
So little going on here I was bored throughout the song. The vocals coming in offered a small highlight but it quickly wore off.
# REVOLVING DOORS
Interesting intro into solid vocals. Tune stays interesting throughout. Much better after that yawner of an intro.
# HILLBILLY MAN
Ooo some more stringed instrument action. Oh another way mellow tune. No wait theres the beat. Very pre-programed on an old keyboard sounding. I like it but not a fan of whats going on with the vocals.
# DETROIT
Party. Very daft punk sounding intro. Lighthearted but not mellow or melancholy. Sounds like it belongs on a Katamari sound track.
# SHY-TOWN
Droning spaceouty type tune. I'm not in the mood for this right now.
# LITTLE PINK PLASTIC BAGS
Dial in the space ambiance atmosphere setting. I'll have to listen to the whole thing later its putting me to sleep. Not fair to the track.
# THE JOPLIN SPIDER
Woah. Crazy stuff going on here but I'm not feeling cohesion. Sounds like someone just discovered some new effects on their synth. Obviously thats not the case but it sure sounds like it. I don't like it no sir.
# THE PARISH OF SPACE DUST
What, a waltz beat? Well, easy to hear where they're going with this one. Ahaha oh god I was so very wrong. All I can say is why? Caught me off guard. I'm undecided on this one.
# THE SNAKE IN DALLAS
I'm getting deja vu here. Oh here comes the lead. I am distracted by the brass that sounds exactly like some stuff from Earthbound. That was short and sweet. Not bad for yet another chill tune.
# AMARILLO
Interesting start lots of reverb gives at least a little more depth than some of the previous tracks. Good mesh of synth, vocals, and instruments (if they're synth as well, well done on making them sound believable). I like this one a lot. My favorite so far for sure.
# THE SPEAK IT MOUNTAINS
Lol, this must be the speak it credited song. Oh, no shit its in the title -_-. Interesting start into a bland section, hopefully this picks up. It didn't.
# ASPEN FOREST
I didn't realize this track had even started. I guess they got their transition down from the previous track. Liking the synth piano. Not too bad.
# BOBBY IN PHOENIX
Ear catching intro. Ah. Well it is what it is. No surprises in this track. Its solid.
# CALIFORNIA AND THE SLIPPING OF THE SUN
More chill with nothing to help it stand out.
# SEATTLE YODEL
That's the end cap? -_-
Overall thoughts:
Nowhere near as good as any other gorillaz album, but a few standout tracks. Too much of the same sound in a concentrated chunk. Its too much to take at once with not enough variation especially after plastic beach which was all over the place. Its cool they were able to produce this with the limited amount of equipment but it really shows. This would have been cool to hear a new track at a concert. As standalones they'd be much better off. However, as plastic beach taught me I'll have to give it a few more listens. Maybe it will grow on me.
Amarillo is far and away the best track imo. Detriot is throwaway fun, the super fast jellyfish of The Fall. Snake in Dallas is solid all around.
