Wow, don't come into my store for a game you didn't pre-order, I will flat out deny you if you are a regular. Case in point, Tales of Symphonia. We had 3 people pre-order, and had 15 people call the day before (because dumbasses always think that the SHIP dates must mean we get them) asking for it. Tales arrives, 5 friggin copies. I sell all 3 to pre-orders, and hold the other two in the back for people I feel are worthy. Then throughout the day people wander in asking for it, and I say "Sorry, didn't pre-order, were sold out".
Is that wrong? To me its not. Its called LEARNING. To people who put $5 down, it guaranteed for me to get 5 copies, where I would only get MAYBE 1 on release date. Why should I allow others who didn't pre-order the privlage of getting a game the day it comes out. Dosn't seem fair.
BTW, I do this for all major releases. When NCAA came out, I ONLY sold Pre-orders before and on release date. The day after, I put them out, and they were all sold that day (hence my store not loosing a single dime).
OH! I always kep a big stack right next to the register as well so the customers who didn't pre-order can see them and be like "Sell me one from there..." which I reply "Sorry, those are for people who put $5 down to guarantee there copy, oh and they also get a free shirt". SLAM!
I agree on the pre-order thing, but remind me never to shop at your store. I mean c/mon, sell the other 2 only to people you "think are worthy" get the other 2 copies. That's BS, how the hell do you deem someone worthy? Is there some height requirement or something I don't know about for buying games? The worthy person is the one who walks into your store first wanting the game. That's how a business is supposed to be run. You should appreciate all your customers, and clearly you don't, even your regulars apparently.
