Kinect - Gen. Info & Discussion

Rovio, the developer behind the iPhone and Android game phenomenon Angry Birds, have unveiled via Twitter not only that Angry Birds will be heading to the Wii and 3DS later in the year, but that the upcoming Xbox 360 version of the game might well feature Kinect Support.

Confirmation that the game is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, as well as Sony's Playstation Network was given at last years Social Games Summit by Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka. Late last week, replying to a plea from a Twitter user asking for Kinect Support, Rovio replied that "You might just get what you ask for..."

This would be the second Xbox Live Arcade game announced to feature Kinect after Twisted Pixel's The Gunstringer was unveiled last week. Hopefully there are many more to come!
Kinect Sports Boxing has grown on me. Was playing yesterday with my kids and that was a hoot. Also I played online. I lost my first bout, but then won the second one barely, which was totally thrilling. :)
I had no idea that Kinect Sports offered online play. Now I can't wait for Goozex to send it to me. :D

Personally, I think I'd rather play Angry Birds normally than with Kinect. Considering the rapid gameplay, Kinect could be laborious.

Yep, all the sports offer online play. It's a little odd how it works. Any option that shows an Xbox Live logo can be played online, which are the "vs. Opponent" options, but to do so you have to then select "Change Opponent", and then choose either "Friends & Family" or ... I forget what it says offhand, but basically the other option, which gives you a random opponent.
There is free dlc for Kinect sports & joy ride.
Do you mean there's a new DLC add-on for Kinect Sports, or is this the one that's been there for a while that added a few mini-game options?

Technically third. Doodle Jump was the second. I really doubt it will be a retail release ;)

i can't say that I see Angry Birds as a great use of Kinect, but I would love to be proven wrong. Doodle Jump might be amusing. I presume you'll tilt your body left and right, as opposed to tilting your phone left and right. That could be pretty fun, and a workout. That seems like a better use, but then I really hope they aren't going to try to charge 1200 points for it. Or really even 800. 400 tops.

I got my copy of Your Shape and played it tonight. For somebody as out of shape as me, at least, this makes for a good workout and I can play it in the evenings when the kids are in bed, unlike dance games. So this fits the bill pretty well for me. The only problem I had was that it didn't seem to be able to see my "lunge" move at all. I don't know why. Maybe I'm too tall? That was really the only problem I ran into, though, and I could still do the move, I just wasn't getting credit for it as far as 100% was concerned. Also, it sometimes wasn't clear what I was doing wrong with regard to the extra stuff that you need to do to get 100%. It could be clearer.

The other thing I'm not sure about is that the gym games seem to be exactly the same each time. I wish it would mix up the sequences of blocks to hit in virtual smash, for instance. They are a good workout, but as far as being a game it would benefit from some variation.

When it was on sale I bought a couple of the DLC routines, and now I wish I'd bought all of them. The Cardio Boxing one seems good, but only for the sale price. At regular price it doesn't seem like you're getting much for your money. I didn't try the other one I bought yet. I can't remember the name of it. Zen, perhaps? Hopefully they go on sale again at some point in the future.

One thing I note is that the game says to put the sensor as close to eye level as possible, so that Kinect TV Mount is just about perfect. Also the Kinect is starting to look less monstrously huge up there to me now. I guess I'm getting use to it. :)

Angry Birds already came out on PSN months ago as a mini, but I'd love a Kinect version. 3DS, too, as long as it isn't $40. At&T's shitty app store doesn't offer Angry Birds, so I can't get it on my phone.

That would be a good rental candidate. I wish redbox around me had game rentals (and this game). I'm pretty skeptical it won't suck, but would like to try it.

Goddamn it, GO AWAY ANGRY BIRDS! You were a cool iphone game, then you became annoying and now I want you to GO AWAY FOREVER!

I agree, basically. I've thoroughly enjoyed the original and seasons, but I tried to play the free version of Rio and stopped after a couple levels. I've done this before. These folks really need to move onto something new now. I'm sure they've got a different game in them somewhere. I guess they won't, though, as it still sells like crazy.

I plan on doing a blog sometime but my 2 cents on the Kinect in general; I love the peripheral and Kinect adventures and dance central. The games are fun and I never thought I'd get into them
It comes out next week.
Oh...the advertisement on the marketplace stated it was out this week. Thanks for clearing that up.

Any word on Monkey See Monkey Do? My gf is interested, but I don't want her to waste her money (again, Zumba was a big shit pile).
Well, I've never played it. :p
You've never had a phone that offered it for download, have you? That's why I don't have the mobile version- At&T's app store doesn't carry it. It's really quite excellent, though. I had played then phone version, but I got a free copy for Windows and just recently downloaded the PSN mini for $2 since I had $2.xx sitting in my PSN wallet left over from a previous sale.

Not before! But it's coming out on WP7 within the next 2 months. I thought about the PS3 and PC versions, but I'm just gonna wait for XBLA and WP7.

YourShape: G Series FIT Workout with Gunnar Peterson

This DLC comes with a new Achievement, by the way. The Bollywood DLC has 2 Achievements, too. Who knew?
I downloaded it. 30 minutes. I will try it tommorrow.

It claims to be an upper body workout, which is something Yourshape definitely needs. So many of the routines are just squats, lunges, repeat. The really should have had less programs and more variety and exercises within each program. The whole thing about how every workout day within a program being identical is so wrong, that is almost seems like a bug.

The UFC trainer game is coming out in June. Hopefully it works very well with Kinect. The best part of YourShape is the boxing, so UFC trainer could be awesome.

Thanks for the heads up on the Your Shape freebie DLC. Added it to my queue. You know the problem I have with Your Shape? I'm not sure I want my lack of exercising to be common knowledge among my Xbox friends. :) :)

Hey, maybe you get some additional exercise outside of the game. Who are we to know?

I did the Free G-Fit DLC this morning. I would say it's the best workout session of all the disc and DLC. It has 4 "routines" (triple sets) then repeats them twice for 30 minutes. It's the only workout that is somewhat successful at being a full body workout. You get an 15g achievement for going through it.

It's too bad the rest of the stuff on the disc isn't as high quality as the G-Fit and cardio boxing. I'm still working on 10k calories achivement... halfway there.

I liked carnival games a LOT.

The controls feel responsive, and the mini games were pretty fun. Its not worth 50 on any planet, but once it hits 20 i'd say go for it. Its my third fav kinect game so far, behind kinect sports and dance central.

New game announcement: PowerUp Heroes

Ubisoft is finally acknowledging the development of technology to give your Xbox 360 avatar superpowers. This top-secret program, called PowerUP Heroes, will be available to the public around the world in June, turning Kinect-enabled Xbox 360s into a battleground for personal simulacra.

Players infuse their "super suits" with powers, and then face off in Kinect-controlled fights, in order to earn the right to take their opponent's suit, leaving them powerless and nude. Some of the 20 suits include the Necromancer, which gives your Avatar dominion over a skeleton army, and the Mentalist, which gives your Avatar the power to " break into their enemy's mind."

Not sure if I like the sound of this one, but I hope there's at least a demo to try it out.

Yeah, the teaser video, or whatever you call that, is pretty discouraging. I can't say I'm looking forward to this one, but would love to have a demo prove it fun.

I wish they'd update Netflix so it didn't suck on anything but FiOS. Or close to it. I've got something like 2.5 Mbps (or whatever it is) DSL and Netflix on the Xbox is maddening. Frequent hiccups where it goes to a black screen with a little message saying "Adjusting for changes in network bandwidth", or something like that, and then it starts again. I don't seem to have any issues using Netflix on my iPad. It's flawless there. If they have to stream in upscaled 480p, then so be it. I am perfectly satisified with the quality of upscaled DVDs, so upscale 480p streaming for lower bandwidth connections would suit me fine if that would get rid of those jarring hiccups. Sigh.

You might want to check that your NAT is open and your ports are forwarded.

I use netflix a lot and it's a little flaky sometimes, but never like what you are talking about.

Hell, maybe with the new update the player is more consistent.

I used to have that issue too and setting my NAT to open was a good step but in the end most of the problem was with my ISP. 2.5 really isn't good for netflix and you'll hardly ever get HD with that speed. I called up my ISP and got them to bump me to 12Mbps for $5 more a month!

I'm pretty sure I've got the ports forwarded and an open NAT. My beef is that the should handle connections like mine by streaming a lower resolution, then upscale it, like a DVD, rather then trying to stream in HD regardless. The Wii handles Netflix flawlessly on this same connection, albeit not upscaled since it can't do that, but that's got nothing to do with the streaming at 480p - upscaling is after the fact.. So if they'd at least give us the option to force 480p, that would do the trick and I'd be happy. Oh well. Sorry for derailing the thread.... Back to your regularly scheduled Kinect talk....

Carnival Games is a really good game, though. I just got it and am pleased. I'm actually really surprised it hasn't gotten more press/recognition because it's the first even remotely worth-playing game to come out for Kinect since launch. ...and probably the last one until Child of Eden comes out.

Plus you can get a monkey avatar pet. Come on, that's friggin sweet right there.

Oh, yes, there is skee ball and it's fun! It's pretty realistic, I think. Honestly, most of the minigames are fun and addictive. The best one is the wheel game. It's like the wheel on price is right mixed with deal or no deal and comes with a 200 point achievement (entirely luck-based though).

Not that I'm Mr. Carnival Games fan boy, but I've had a good time with it. Plus, you get $10 credit if you get it at amazon.

Where the hell is my Star Wars Kinect game? Do I have to wait until E3 to hear a smidgen, and then endure about a years worth of hype? Probably.

I hate to sound like a Giant Bomb fanboy, but they have a 20 minute Quick Look of Carnival Games up.
