Kinect - Gen. Info & Discussion

That's a very good question....did they post an FAQ or anything like that? I think as long as you preregister, then log on, everyone on the console should be in.

Good point about having multiple profiles logged in. Maybe we can all get it that way. Kinect does give achievements to everybody logged in, even if they aren't actually playing, so maybe this would apply. Hopefully so. Though... to be honest, that avatar t-shirt is kind of lame, so I don't know why I care. :)

It would appear that my Kinect is down for the count. The infrared sensor no longer functions. When the device is plugged in the video on the dashboard is fuzzy and static. The normal red you see in the infrared camera faintly and briefly appears, then dies. The microphone function still works.

It should go without saying that all connections were inspected and appeared normal. Though one is prone to blame the victim in situations such as this, I must stress that I did not drop the device or mishandle it in any way.

I'm going to send it in for an in-warranty repair once Microsoft's warranty request site is functional again (once you get to the payment tab, it tells you the site is temporarily unavailable which is not surprising).

Interesting development.

That sucks Spokker.

Interesting because I just got some kind of error last night and the unit had to restart....first time for that. I wonder if these things will start going after a certain period of time. Hope not. I'm still enjoying mine.

There is no trend yet. I could only find one other person who has posted about this exact problem.

It worked after the Netflix update. The last time I used it was then in order to test out the new features.

Hope they fix it quickly, Spokker.

Did anyone do the Guinness sprint thing? I work graveyards and I just couldn't get up early enough for it. Wish they'd done it in the evening instead!

I did the sprint. Honestly, it was underwhelming. Don't know what I expected really, but I logged on, did the sprint, fooled around in game for a few minutes....and that was it.

I was too busy to do the sprint. Did they post any info on how many people participated in it? The shirt looked pretty lame anyway.
Fruit Ninja would be a great fit for Kinect. Hope they do a good job with it.
With the precision needed for fruit ninja on mobile devices, i am cautious about Fruit Ninja being anything more then something to look silly in front of others for, but i'd love to be proven wrong.

I've tried to submit an online repair request for my broken Kinect four times on four different days and each time it says, "Site is temporarily unavailable." on the payment tag.

Now I have to call and they'll make me go through a bunch of worthless troubleshooting steps. Damn.

OK CAG'ers - how you feeling about your Kinect purchase? it's $129 at BB with 2 games (DC and KA). i'm sitting on $120 of BB gift cards. i don't know...there really isn't all that much right now that interests me. i want to try some of the games and the GUI stuff is cool, but there is nothing i am dying to play right now. i figure i will end up getting it at some point...just don't know if i should keep waiting.

Personally, I would wait. Could be some better deals as we go through the year and right now there's not a whole lot of content unless you want a dancing/exercise/kids game, which it sounds like you wouldn't. Once we hit E3 we should find out what's coming -- until then, I would hold off.

I think all these deals are pointing to a Kinect/xbox price drop at E3. So if you can wait, wait.

Also, expect a TON of announcements at E3...MS already said so.

That is a decent deal.

It would just depend on how much you want to play or how much you will play Kinect Sports and Dance Central. If you aren't going to play them that much, just wait and a better deal and more games will come along.

thanks guys. i think i'm going to wait...see what MS announces at E3 and maybe even hold off until the holidays this year. should be some crazy good deals. plus, i'm still rocking the OG Xbox, so maybe i'll hold off for a deal on the 4GB Xbox + Kinect.

Rumor from Eurogamer is that Microsoft will show 10 non sequel Kinect games at E3. Also Dance Central 2 and Kinect Sports 2 will come out this holiday.

Big shock there!

Kinect sports is a huge hit at get togethers, but Dance Central isnt anymore due to it being a single player game. DC2 is for sure a 2-player at once game, so that will help a lot with get together events. Kinect sports needs not only more games, but ability to play against other people who have profiles on your console, and a WAY WAY WAY better interface. So clunky and time consuming to get into a game in it. Track and field is insanely popular too.

To the person asking about the 129 deal, i'd def wait for E3. Ive read lots of talk about big price drops. And there better be news of DC1 tracks imported into DC2, and way more and BETTER DLC for it. The DLC for DC has been disappointing to say the least. I'd say it borders on criminally horrible.

with the code in the manual I'm pretty sure they intended to have tracks export to dc2, I'm fine with the quality and number of dc dlc tbh I don't want songs every week and get overrun with dlc like I did playing rockband

Personally i'd like much moire then 3 songs every 5-6 weeks, and then those songs are pretty terrible and not popular. Im not asking for a rock band style DLC flood of 7-10 a week, 3 a week is fine. But its obvious they are holding back the good stuff for DC2.

As anything music related, tastes are subjective, but im with a younger crowd usually (18-31), so tastes may differ. Anyway, with Just Dance official for Kinect and Move, Dance Central will need to step their game up. Just Dance is just such a blast on the wii, cant wait to try out the kinect version, day -1.

no it's just it takes longer to make dlc for dc vs how fast they can make dlc for rb

I tried JD on a friends wii and the thing that really sold me on JD is how it did multiplayer. The songs that make you interact with each other are a blast.
This has me worried:

I understand them trying to appeal to the female tweens but, what a way to make a statement.

You should see the thousands of comments on XBOX's Facebook page in response to this...pretty funny.
Hahaha! Yeah, so because we are girls we should be going bananaz because Justin is doing promotion? Think that's pretty weird way to generalize a demographic marketing group....bunch of old farts behind a desk trying to determine what's "hip"

Like you stated, music is subjective. So what is bad for you, could be good for someone else.

But do realize 90% of the songs are/were actually pretty popular. Just looking at the last 2 releases...
Fergialicious by Fergie - It peaked #2 on the Billboard Top 100.
Informer by Snow - It peaked #1 on the Billboard Top 100. #28 on Billboard Top 100 for the decade of the 90s.
Wild Thing by Tone Loc - It peaked #2 on the Billboard Top 100.
Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It by Dem Franchise Boyz - Besides being an obvious dance hip hop song, it peaked #7 on the Billboard Top 100, #1 on Hot Rap Tracks.

So out of the 6 songs, only 2 weren't Billboard smashes and those two tracks are both dance tracks (D.A.N.C.E. and Lapdance). Both are songs we (my fiance and I) are familar with.

I fall within your age range (18-31) and all of these songs I can remember/were released during my time. Yes, I am not, nor was, a fan of some of these tracks but I will say we did buy a couple of these tracks because we were.

I will agree though I wish there was more options to choose from each week like Rock Band.
no it's just it takes longer to make dlc for dc vs how fast they can make dlc for rb
It doesnt take 2 seconds to make RB DLC either, it gets a auto chart made then they go in manually and re-do the chart by hand to adjust it specific per difficulty and on what they think it should play like. I really do not buy that it takes significantly longer to make DLC for dance central, maybe a little longer, but not 3 dlc every 5-6 weeks vs 7-10 songs a week for rock band. That is just bull and they know it. They are just using this time to make more tracks for DC2 and more DLC ready for it.

Yes, Just Dance with a group of people is an absolute blast. It really shames dance central in the fun department, and with a much more varied track selection to boot. I prefer JD's play list to dance centrals, especially JD2. I am extremely interested in trying out JD Kinect.
Like you stated, music is subjective. So what is bad for you, could be good for someone else.

Right, in the end, there just isnt enough music, the variety is poor and worse off, its so rare to see new content. Its pretty absurd imo for a company whos motto is all about DLC. And i never said those songs were strait up bad that came out (although a few really are), they just arent songs i'd say people want to get up and dance to at a party. Which is how DC is played 90% of the time.

The potential market for Dance Central content is what, 1/20 as large as Rock Band? If even that. Harmonix would be fools to give it the same resources. As the Kinect Market grows and Dance Central comes out, both increasing the number of people who could possibly buy Dance Central DLC, we will surely see more frequent DLC releases.

All future DLC from Rock Band 3's release and onward was Rock Band 3 exclusive. Yet weekly DLC comes out for that, and Dance Central has outsold RB3 by 3x at least. Dance Central is over 2.5 mil worldwide, RB3 is nowhere even near that. Last i read, RB3 was at less then 500k sold worldwide, but that was a few months ago.

But Rock Band 3 is on 3 platforms and Dance Central only the one. Also, I don't think they intended for RB3 to tank - it was a bet that (sort of) failed. But DLC will surely be compatible between RB3 and 4, again increasing potential customers.

RB3 on 3 platforms is less then 1 mil guaranteed, DC is on 1 and is over 2.5 mil in sales and climbing monthly. I know where i would put my resources. Also, you expect a RB4? And you expect it to do well? Seriously? Band games are dead.

I thought they as much as said that there would be no RB4, but that they would continue to support RB3. Or am I just imagining that?

Look no further than success prior to RB3. This is why DLC is the way it is today. So what that DC sold more. It should have as it is the only truly worthy title to the Kinect i.e. one last year's Xmas hot toys of the year. As for it's DLC... remember not only is there the charting/securing licensing, they also have to choreograph and program for a whole new product.

Just looking at our one board on the web, I wouldn't say Rock Band is dead. The Rock Band thread here has since released always been on front page of this discussion (if not in the top 5). If it was dead, no one would be discussing it. If Harmonix wasn't making money, trust me they would have done as you suggest.

As for RB4, my guess is it will be a long while. The goal for them is to not saturate the market and keep DLC going. Remember Rock Band is really about the music, not about graphics, etc. Gameplay can't be anymore fine tuned then it already is.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will have Kinect support.
Band games are dead.
Harmonix has stated that they detect 1 million unique users per month playing Rock Band 3. This is the bare minimum because there are also going to be people who play that either don't have their console plugged in or didn't bother to sign in before playing.

Harmonix has rightfully decided to not release a Rock Band 4 this year and instead focus on DLC. The music game genre simply needs to rest.

By the way, there is another guitar game being released by Ubisoft that, instead of releasing a proprietary guitar, it will let you plug in any real electric guitar. We'll see if it works or not, but there is definitely going to be some competition in the future.
