Kinect - Gen. Info & Discussion
I will. I play Fruit Ninja on my phone almost everyday. I was depressed when I heard everyone bashing it, but the reviews are fantastic, I can't wait ti get my hands on it now, especially since it's not 1200 points like EVERY OTHER GAME!
It's a casual game. Some people can't handle that, as if Fruit Ninja Kinect will bring an end to the Call of Duty franchise. The game looks like a lot of fun and I'm really looking forward to it. I don't expect to play it for 34 hours straight, but if I did at least I wouldn't die from sitting in the same position too long. ;)

I'll be out of town for the week - heading up to Austin, where I will be having lunch with someone from Twisted Pixel (Ms. Splosion Man, The Gunstringer). If not for that, I'd totally be buying Fruit Ninja on day one.

I most probably am getting Fruit Ninja Kinect tommorrow morning. Seems like a ton of fun. They should get Halfbrick to do Inifinity Blade Kinect. Seems like Halfbrick did a great job with the interface and Kinect sensing. It seems like some companies get Kinect and others struggle with it.
It seems like this and Dance Central 2 will be the best Kinect Demo games this xmas. Kinect Sports 2 would be ok, but takes more time to explain and setup.

Just Dance 3 will be the most impressive Kinect game to demo for sure. It supposedly has 4 player at the same time (only kinect game to do this, likely requires football field to get done), and the record your moves then have someone try to copy is on there which is going to be a blast.

Fruit Ninja Kinect is great! Once you get the hang of it, anyway. I still kind of suck at it, but it's fun. However, we've had a fair amount of problems with it either failing to calibrate when switching players or for some reason it just stopping recognizing slices from one person or the other. I mean completely. I'm not sure, but it might be helped if my kids do Kinect ID, as I think it's misrecognizing them as me sometimes. I'm not sure, though. Perhaps it's just a bug. In any case I told them to do Kinect ID again in the morning.

Also there's definitely a problem playing it two player when the two people are of very different heights. It will usually calibrate to my height and then my poor little 8 year old will just be a head and arms poking up from the bottom of the screen! However we came up with a simple workaround - when it starts to calibrate I quickly crouch down low. Problem solved. Though I do need to crouch a bit while playing, at least it works. I vote for dual-Kinect-Sensor support in the future. :)

Please do add me if you are playing the game. I need some folks to compare scores with other then my kids. I'm "Crunc is". Send me a message to let me know who you are on CAG when you do. Either on the Xbox or via a PM here.

Kinect Hub is stupid. They really need to update it so we can get to our game library. I do see Fruit Ninja Kinect on the hub, but as it turns out that's just an advertisment and a way to download the game. You can start the game from there, but *only* if you are the one who bought it. My youngest found this out this morning. He tried to start the game and it wanted him to buy the game too!! So, after an initial upset when he thought he couldn't play it, I told him to use a game controller and launch it from the game library that way, which of course worked fine, but surely this shouldn't necessary. Maybe in the next big dashboard update? One can hope, anyway.

From what I've heard, the next dashboard update will make almost the whole dash look like the kinect hub, except it will actually work; and everything is voice searchable.

Some of the blades you can unlock in FNK are pretty cool. I like the piano one a lot, and of course the flame blade looks pretty sweet in HD. The unlockables definitely enhance this game. We're going on vacation tomorrow (beach trip) and I hadn't been planning to also pack Kinect (to save space), but I think I'm going to need to figure out a way to jam it all into the car. :)

Gotten around to playing Fruit Ninja I was pretty impressed. Lots of fun and a bit of a nice workout when playing. My kids had a blast as well.
Theres a gunstringer demo up. You need to browse to demos to find it (on the 360), doesn't appear to be on xbox.com yet.
Awesome, thanks for the heads up!

I'll check out the demo of Gunstringer. Thanks!

On our beach trip, Fruit Ninja Kinect got a lot of play from the family during the non-beach times. I definitely still like the game a lot. No, you won't play it for 3 hours straight. Not that type of game. I feel it was worth the asking price.

I really dig Fruit Ninja Kinect, but it's been 100+ degrees here lately and it's been hard to get motivated for physical activity, even of the arm flapping variety.

I love the presentation of the Gunstringer. The narrator is perfect and the theater backdrop fits really well with the game. When I got to playing it I was disappointed that the game has lock-on instead of precision shooting though. Nonetheless it was good fun. I think I'll pick it up when it comes out, especially since it includes Fruit Ninja, which my girlfriend has been needling me to buy ever since the demo came out.

Had my Kinect tucked away for a few months but my girlfriend and I have been using it almost every other day for Fruit Ninja and Hole in the Wall. Both extremely silly games but I love playing them in short 30-60min spurts. Haven't had any connection / tracking issues on either game.

Super excited to try the Gunstringer demo today!

I'm going to be reviewing The Gunstringer for Co-Optimus.com. Looking forward to it!

As for Fruit Ninja Kinect, I love it. Even the $2 DLC is pretty decent, considering it comes with 3 Achievements that add extra playtime to the game.

Fruit Ninja Kinect has DLC? I didn't even realize it. What's in it?

EDIT: Never mind, found it: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Storm-Season/5593a976-d77b-4081-895f-e1caa565d0a9

It's just a blade, background and shadow, which you get right away. What are the achievements?

The hardest thing in FNK is getting use to watching your shadow so you can slice accurately. Has anyone managed to unlock the blade that requires you to only slice strawberries in arcade mode, and to slice all of them? I tried that a few times and thought it was pretty damned difficult to do.

The Achievements are for getting 75 points in the first 30 seconds of Zen mode (that took me 30-45 minutes of attempts), getting 20 (cumulative) critical hits in Classic, and slicing two pomegranates in Classic (the second one comes around 230-270 points so it's tough) - all while using the new blade/bg/shadow that come with the DLC.

Oh, and YourShape: Fitness Evolved has a WP7 companion app now.

Also, Twister is coming to Kinect in November.

www.majornelson.com says that there is going to be a Kinect bundle that includes both Kinect Adventures and a code for downloading Child of Eden. It will have special packaging that shows both games.

So it looks like Kinect itself is getting a holiday pack in.

I can't download the gunstringer demo, maybe someone here can help me figure out why...
I can't even connects to XBL. My gold subscription ran out a week ago and I haven't been able to connect since. So today, I figured it was because my ethernet cable was frayed or something, so I connected wirelessly, and the xbox said it did so successfully. However, I still wasn't able to connect to xbox live. Did they get rid of silver or something?

Yep, if you dont pay, the only other way is for bill gates to come to your house and rape you for a few hours a week, and he gives you a live 1-month card after. Its worth it if you're a cheap ass.

But seriously, you might have a problem with your account, try calling ms tech support and have them look up your info.

I wasn't thrilled with the Gunstringer demo either. Doesn't feel as tight as Child of Eden, and I was also bit put off by the
fucking a crocodile
scene, which seems completely out of place. I didn't make to the end of the demo before being basically done with it, so that's not a good sign.

I wouldnt put too much faith into a sega made kinect game, but i do have it on the way to rent, i'll def see how it is. I didnt try gunstringer demo since im going to rent it anyway, rather just play it that way. I really liked child of edens controls btw.

I was just as skeptical, in all honestly rise of nightmares just plain looks like shit. I picked it up today and was blown away. The controls are so fluid, much more than any other kinect game I've played. I love the way they incorporate the gestures into the game, you have to open doors just the way they would normally be opened. It's not just one motion for all doors, switches, etc. Rise of Nightmares is easily going to be the kinect sleeper hit of the year. No one is going to pick this up and it's a damn shame.

Just remember, the only way to show that we want more mature themed kinect games is to support them, which is why I picked this up in the first place. Luckily, it makes it a lot easier to support when the game is this good. Any fans of House of the dead will likely feel right at home with the style/atmosphere of this game. The only negative I have to say so far is that the graphics are just downright ugly.

Yeah, it's too bad Dead Island and Rise of Nightmares couldn't just be one game. It seems like they both got a lot of things right but aren't perfect. Combining the good parts of both would probably make a pretty amazing experience.

Word is Rise of Nightmares is a 10 hour story, that's a hell of a lot longer than I expected. It's going to take me awhile to beat simply because I hate standing to play for long stretches of time.

EDIT: maybe not, shipwrecks review said 6 hours, the oxm review I read said 10.

Rise of Nightmares sounds fun, but I don't think I'd ever really be able to play it, having an 8 and 10 year old. I could, at night, but without enough volume to make it exciting. I'll rent it if it shows up at Redbox, though. Probably would still pick it up when it hits the bargain bins. I figure if I can get it for $10 it will be worth it. Actually, I'm not really into blood and gore that much anyway. I'd like something as in-depth as this game, but not the "gore = mature" variety.

I have a feeling that the reason Rise of Nightmares keeps getting knocked as an "ugly game," is because of the reports that Kinect uses 10-20% of the CPU.

Careful there, Crunchewy. It sounds like you're criticizing the game's goriness as if mature games should not have those elements. But many of us fellow adults think horror games are pretty rad.
I do understand your reluctance to play violent games in front of your kids though.

I'm not criticizing it's gore at all. There's nothing inherently mature about gory stuff (see Friday the 13th), but nor is there anything inherently immature about gory stuff (see Pulp Fiction). What is for sure is that I can't play the M-rated gorefest games as much due to having young kids and this is especially problematic for Kinect games because you generally don't wear headphones while playing them, or at least I sure don't.

Well, if we take mature as meaning 'not for kids' then gore is certainly mature. After all, the big M explicitly means that content is recommended for adults only. But if you're thinking of emotional maturity, I guess you could say gore doesn't fall under that umbrella.

Did Gunstringer get a early release or did my Best Buy screw up? Just went by and they had a bunch of copies out on the table by the video game section - picked one up with a RZ cert and 10% off coupon - figured $25 for Gunstringer and Fruit Ninja was about my price point. I haven't seen anything about an early release - but it was there and I picked it up without a problem. It was the Elk Grove, CA store for anyone interested.

Leedmees looks like it could be fun. I'm going to download the demo and check it out. Rise of Nightmares sure sounds pretty awful in that review, but didn't they dislike Fruit Ninja Kinect too? I think they just don't like Kinect. Or maybe more correctly, they dislike moving.

The Gunstringer demo didn't do much for me, couldn't get interested in it but then again i've never liked most of Twisted Pixel's games anyways. Anyone purchase Hole In The Wall and/or Leedmees? Haven't heard much talk about them. Finally going to get around to playing Child of Eden too.

Okay, so Leedmess is quite charming and has a great premise. Picking the little guys up with your body and moving them to the goal is fun and silly.

On the downside, you can't adjust/turn off music or sound effects, and the music is annoying and balanced too loud. Sure, you can go through the Guide to replace the music with a customs oundtrack, but that's a hassle. Instructions before levels stay on-screen way too long and can't be skipped, even when revisiting/retrying the level.

More importantly, the game's Kinect tracking is sub-par. It shows a Dance Central-like window in the corner of how it's tracking your body. But sometimes it will randomly stop tracking my body entirely, with the cursor just going crazy until I hit A on a controller and then unpause the game. More frequently, the game just fails to follow what one of my arms is doing even though it shows up perfectly in the silhouette box in the corner. It's annoying because you need to save all the Leedmees in order to perfect a level, but the game sometimes won't adjust my arm's position in time or it registers me as making a sharp movement, which throws the Leedmee to its death, even though I was actually moving slowly and carefully. The problem is most evident when you have to bend down and pick up Leedmees from the ground, which works spottily at best. It's a shame the devs didn't hone the controls better.

I think the game is still fun and the co-op is very good. You just have to be a little patient with the control quirks in order to enjoy it.

Played the Gunstringer for a while today. It's awesome. Great, intuitive controls and the story/premise/sense of humor are all fantastic. I like it much better than Child of Eden, not that Eden is bad.

Question on Gunstringer: I know it's rated T, and I was a little bothered by the part of the demo with the lumberjack and the gator; but how "T" is the remainder of the game? My boy played the demo and loved it, and for some reason loves Fruit Ninja as well. I'm fine with cartoonish shootouts and a skeleton marionette, but didn't like that one part of the demo.
