Last Movie You Saw Strikes Back

Just saw a sneak preview of Cinderella Man. It moved me and during the fight scenes, it made me feel like I was sitting right there in Madison Square Garden. Very good.

Donny Darko on DVD, and Hitchhiker's Guide in theaters.

First time I'd seen Darko in my life. It would've been better if the ending wasn't all glitchy, though...

ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (2004 version)

Loving John Carpenter's original, I was expecting the worst with the remake. I am surprisingly impressed with the realism and intensity that the remake brought to the table. It was excellent. I highly recommend it...

and Ja Rule gets blasted in the melon. Gotta Love it!!

Im a new poster but recent lurker. This site is great by the way, but for any fans of the chambara genre (samurai sword flixs) and fans of good movies in general, Zatoichi is one of the best long time standing movie series of all time. Zatoichi episode 26 "Darkness is his ally" which is basically the final movie in the series is a excellent place to start, strangely enuff. It is directed by the main actor of the series (shintaro katsu) and is my personal favorite. This movie series is truly awesome, and any fans of japanese period films and anime will love. Zatoichi is the ultimate underdog hero. He is a poor blind yakuza and carries a sword in his cane, and dispenses justice to the unjust. There is some serious samurai fights and zatoichi is so fast in combat if you blink you will miss something. There is also a hardy does of that wonky japanese comedy! I highly reccommend this to CAG members to check out. Also the popular Lone wolf and Cub (stars Shintaro Katsu's brother) series is practically Ninja Scrolls live action. anyways some great flix i hope someone who has never checked out will do so. CAG rocks.

edit:Just saw the post above by jaykrue! Amen to Zatoichi!

Welcome.

I've got Zatoichi sitting around here somewhere, I just have to get around to watching it. And I'll have to borrow the LW&C series from my friend when he gets back in the country.

They just recently made a remake in 2003 i think, and it is very well done and a good movie in its own right ,(I think the director of Ichi the killer made it) but it cant even hold a candle to Shintaro Katsu's perforamance of the loveable but dealy Zatoichi. Dont let your loved ones in the other room ruin this for you and watch it when you can let yourself be absorbed.
I'm thinking of watching Bring it On right now, but I may fall asleep part way through. :whistle2:k
I ended up just watching the deleted scenes and some of the extended scenes.

Admittedly, classic nippon cinema was only a recent enjoyment for me (started 5 yrs ago) due to the discovery of Kurosawa films at age 23. I've been a fan of chop socky films forever (thanks to Samurai Sundays on TV) but I'd only been exposed to mainly badly dubbed HK flicks.

It wasn't until I was on my own that I started exploring other avenues of asian cinema. I've since expanded my tastes to include German, Dutch, Polish and Russian cinema. I think one movie that Matrix/MMORPG fans should check out is Avalon. It's a Japanese/Polish collaboration. It's about a chick who plays a war game so realistic that life seems to be fake in comparison. She soons finds out that life isn't what it appears to be. If you've seen the Matrix, you'll know what to expect but it's still a fairly cool movie.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 4.5/5 I love the HP movies. I haven't read the books yet but it is on my to do list.

Because Zman pleaded with me (and sent an assassin clone to try and fool me at one point!):

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I loved it, as I had a suspicion I would. I love all of Wes Anderson's films, so maybe I'm just a big fan of his style, but this was was no exception. I was really impressed with the plot (as insane as it gets towards the end). In the other films, I always felt that the characters propelled the plot forward, but it seemed to be the other way around in The Life Aquatic. I felt myself really intrigued as to where the plot was going every step of the way, even on the edge of my seat. Not to say that the characters aren't all great, trust me, they are. Are are perfectly written and acted, and they all really compliment each other so well. The cinematography was also great, as it tends to be in Anderson's films. It gives you a great sense of space between characters and the settings as well, and the frame is always filled with a ton of interesting details. And the music, as usual, just adds so much to every scene. And Seu Jorge's Bowie songs just plain rock.

fuck it, it's awesome. What did you expect? :p

House of Flying Daggers

And thanks for the Life Aquatic review, modium. Now I really want to see it. Of course, the library doesn't seem to want to buy it, so I may actually have to go out and (sigh) RENT it. From a store. With money. Boooooo.

You get your movies from the library?

The Aviator

It's strange, I was thinking about what I'd give the movie, out of 5, and I settled on 4. I desperately wanted to give it a 5, because it's a great picture. Howard Hughes' story is an incredibly fascinating one, and Scorsese shows it honestly and very tastefully. The look of the film, from costuming to sets, is gorgeous, as is the choice of music. It does a great job of putting you in the time period. Schoonmaker's editing is flawless, and keeps the film running at a brisk pace, which is essential considering it's almost 3 hours long. So, all these great accolades, and only giving it a 4? I have no idea why, it just doesn't have the same 'punch' that you'd get from other classis 5/5 films, really. It's a great, grandly entertaining film, but I don't think it'll hold up over a long period, many rewatchings and intense scrutiny. But, it really is a ride of a film, and it's well worth your 3 hours.

The vast majority. I hardly ever rent anymore; I haven't in 2 months and I don't plan on doing much (if any) in the near future. The library here has a pretty good selection, so I've got lots of free movies to keep me occupied. Still, there are plenty more they don't have, so I'll eventually have to start renting, probably online, since places like Netflix actually have a lot of the more obscure stuff I'd like to see.

And there is the problem with them not getting the Life Aquatic or season 3 of Six Feet Under in. I don't really want to pay to see them, but if it doesn't look the library's getting them in a couple of weeks, I will have to take drastic measures.

Theatre - The Longest Yard = 5/5 fucking funny ass movie
Home - Son of the Mask = 3/5 Ok movie, not as good as the first one
