LE Halo 3 Scratched Discs - MS Offers Free Replacement Through 12/31/07

Damn, i had no idea this shit was goin on. My special edition had both disks secure. No scratches here. I always look at the condition of the disks i buy and so i checked these as soon as i got them home last night, and they are pristine. Sorry some of us cags got fuck 'ed over. Im really sorry to see that microsoft dosent even care about the hardest of the hardcore. pitty

I think I'm gonna check mine when I get them then exchange it post-haste if it is scratched. I feel that if you wait too long all the B&M stores will start putting out announcements or flyers or something that they will not accept returns/exchanges because the disc is scratched and that they shoudl be returned to the big MS.

I had to sift through 4 copies of the LE at Target before I found a good one. The clerk was a good guy and help me open and sift through 'em. Positive experience.
I agree, Actually... this is quite entertaining I mean you all spend all this time standing in line at Midnight and all this money for all this retarded hype and you get home with your over hyped, over priced gamed and... it's scratched...

BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN

LOL
I hope you're kidding.

Also, quoted so you can never take it back.
THe car comparison is hardly apt. Scratches on a car are clearly noticable and have an impact on the car from an aestetic point of view. Scratches on a disc however have no real impact on anything. Should the game come free of scratches for the price your paying for it? Absolutely. Is it the end of the world that it doesn't? No, not as long as if doesn't affect the ability to preform it's primary function which is to play the game. Depreciating the value is hardly a good argument here either as the game is going to have zero long term value anyways.
this couldn't be any more wrong.

scratches on the disc do lower its resale value, just as with a car.

scratches can also lead to it being unreadable, so yea, it does affect its function as well.

halo 2 was selling for $30 just up until last week, so the point about long term value also doesn't apply.

Wow. I have to pay shipping. Crap. Well my game disc is pristine, it's my bonus disc that's shitty. I should be able to mail it for about 1.80 through Paypal. But still, the fact they won't pay that 1.80 is ridiculous. Hopefully we all get MS Points sent back with the replacements or something along those lines.

how are u mailing it? just loosely or are you gonna put it in a case?

Probably going to layer it in gravel and wrap it up in a brillo pad.

Well, when i do ship out my discs, i'm asking for compensation. 1 month of XBL should cover it. 2 weeks for delivery plus i have to pay to ship it to them...it's the least they can do. Should be fun talking to customer service :p

My discs are in ok condition, the nub seems to hold them alright but the case has dents all in it...Its also really flimsy, doesnt click closed.

Smooth, Microsoft.

Oh shit, now it was actually worth buying the normal, or even legendary editions thanks to MS. Got my normal for $45ish shipped from Liongames and it ARRIVED TODAY! Woooooo!

I wonder how much money this will cost MS? Probably not much. It costs a good twenty five cents, what, max for the disc? Then a few more pesos to put the game on there? They are also charging you for shipping.

Normally I would support MS with their reactions to the Red Ring of Doom/Death but this is embarassing. MS just raped you and they aren't losing jack out of this. Sorry folks.

actually stores will be sending tons of defective games back so that must cost them something

Actually you only have to pay shipping to get it to them. Microsoft pays for the shipping back to you.

I got mine from Gamecrazy, and both discs were loose. Fortunately, the game disc had no scratches. The bonus disc had a few scratches, but it still played fine.

Got mine from gateway, both discs were scratched and scuffed, I played it and it seemed fine, I will probably play it , beat it then send it back in for a pristine disc

"No replacement will be made if less than 90% of the damaged disc is enclosed."

What the hell does that mean? So if I chop the disc into tiny little pieces, I just have to make sure I get more than 90% of it in the envelope, right? :whistle2:k

Probably to stop people from chopping a disc in half and sending it in for two replacements (which I never would have even thought about doing had they not put that disclaimer there).

They already say that each game can only be replaced once though.

Then again, I suppose 2 friends could "split it"...

Dude, just chop up 9 discs, and get 10 back. What a deal ;)

Damn, my Essentials disc is scratched up, even though both discs were on their holders. And since I don't have a 360, I have no choice but to exchange it, just to be certain. No fun at all...what a gyp!

I guess this is pretty big news. I saw a preview of the news here (Channel 9) and they are doing a story on it. I hope all you CAGs get your copies fixed!

Well i opted out of this debacle and just decided to grab a Legendary while i was at best buy since they had them. I had a Collectors edition pre-ordered at ebstop but instead of driving ou tof the way and wondering if they would upgrade me to a Legendary if they had any (which i doubted) i jsut decided to get it where i found it first.

I just bought a copy, but failed to check that this discs were secure. I feel like an idiot now since I usually do this. I was just in a great hurry so just grabbed a copy and paid. I'm going to open it up tonight, inspect to see if there are any scratches, play it and then either exchange it tomorrow morning if there are scratches or just keep it if it looks and plays fine. I'm not too picky about scratched discs as long as it works since if I play the game a lot, then the discs are bound to get scratched by the simple act of playing them

they are? never had that happen before unless the machine was screwed up
Does anyone remember the scratched Halo 2 disks? I know someone can find the thread... I'm glad Microsoft learns from their mistakes ;)
Microsoft has learned from it. That's why they did it again... they learned that people would buy it anyway, no matter how cheaply they made the package.
they are? never had that happen before unless the machine was screwed up
Yeah...I can go back to my PS2 games, my PS1 games, my Xbox games, my GCN games, and they all pretty much have scratches. It's an inevitability if you actually play them.

Mine is sort of scratched, but barely. It's only like 2-3 small lines though, but I'm still pissed that it has to be this way!! I don't know what I will do, but I might just keep it.

The other CD is fine though, perfect condition.

thats something new to me...i used to play the hell out of my DC games and when i sold them they still looked as if they were brand new...and i am very strict when it comes to that type of thing

cds/dvds get scratched and so do games
cds/dvds get scratched and so do games
sure, if you dont take care of them...but like i said i have not come across scratches on my own discs because of excessive use...i may be wrong but that is my expirence
cds/dvds get scratched and so do games
My oldest PS1 games that have been through hell and back in terms of playtime are still near mint.

I've probably clocked 400 hours on ff7, and 800 on ff tactics total and none of these disks have many scratches.. it's hard to find any in fact.

You guys me lucky. I don't know what to say. Some of my CDs from around 93/94 are scratched and the same with some of my games. Most games look fine, but there are some that I've put in probably 400+ hours (DW7 for instance) that kind of look scratched.

Ok, probably a bad question, but...

How do I know if my discs are loose by listening to the shaking?

I'm shaking it, and it seems like EVERYTHING is moving--sounds like I can hear a book or whatever move. How can I tell if the disc is moving around?

It might be just a book moving and not the disc. Or everything is moving?

When I opened mine up, the book was very very secured. It's a tight fit (not that it's hard to get it out, but it won't move around until you move it) at least in my copy.

A cd/dvd moving is a lot different then paper moving sound wise. Not sure what to say, but I when I opened my CE my disks were perfect/secure. My friend at EB shook it, nothing moved. I shook it when I got home, and I could definitely hear the instructions inside move a bit. Use your instinct.

I've had experience with PS2 game discs moving in their cases before. I know what it sounds like.

But this, I dunno, it doesn't sound like the disc is moving (I could be wrong). When a disc is moving quickly from the top to bottom of case, you could hear a loud, sharp bang. In mine, I don't hear a sharp bang--rather, sounds like papers moving.

I may need to borrow a doctor's hearing device to figure this out. You guys know how doctors have this thing to listen to your heart and lungs? I should borrow that and use it on my game. :whistle2:k

you mean a stethoscope?

My next question, is Microsoft going to be producing *new* Halo 3 Collector's Editions that have the discs securely attached that they will ship to retailers, or is this the only opportunity consumers have to purchase the Collector's Edition and we should buy them while we can and mail in the disc for a replacement?

If Microsoft were to announce that they are going to correct this with future shipments, I will pick one up later rather than having to deal with mailing the disc.

My CE that I got from EB was unopened and had the game disc in a little sleeve, so far it seems like I'm the only one whose CE came like that (haven't read through the whole thread though).

So how are people sending their discs back to Microsoft? Using a padded envelope or something? And, can I just fill out one replacement form for both discs, or do I have to fill out two? I'm thinking of using those paper cd sleeves that come with PC games, taping a piece of cardboard behind it and then putting that in a small padded envelope. Any other ideas?

why exactly did you buy the game?

They are probably going to just destroy the discs when they get them, so I wouldn't be too concerned with how you ship the damaged one back.
You can get padded mailing envelopes at the post office or Mailboxes Etc. that are designed for shipping media.
Just to be on the safe side, I would fill out 1 form for each disc and ship them together.
