So here's a LEGO savings pro-tip that may save you a couple bucks every now and then ...
For those of you with a few Borders Bookstores in your area, there are certain Borders that stock LEGOs in the kid's section of the store. Often it's one or two sets, but on occasion you can find certain stores that stock a larger variety ... usually the smaller sets up to around $30 sets. These might include Star Wars, IJ, Space, Pirates and City.
Now these sets are the same price as LEGO stores, so you avoid the TRU tax ... but that's not the deal.
The real savings comes when Borders drops their 30% and 40% off coupons, which unless specified include toys. Currently Borders has a 30% off coupon (
http://www.bordersmedia.com/coup/coupon300701.asp) ... so it's not a bad way to get a nice discount on LEGOs.
With that said ... I've only found 1 Borders in my area with a large stock of LEGOs ... so look around multiple stores and you might get lucky. Getting the IJ Car Chase for $22 and the new IJ Marketplace for $9 after tax was pretty sweet.
My sons take advantage of this every so often, especially my youngest. Their grandmother likes to give them Border's gift cards, and while they love getting books, they sometimes have a backlog that rivals my own. If they can't find something during a trip, we'll let them use it on toys or such. My youngest picked up Vader's TIE with the last 40% off coupon and a gift card.
