I am watching the Discovery Channel, the Jeff Corwin Experience, and all I have to say is Discovery is the Best HD channel, and proves my theory that I will watch anything that is in High Def.
Well the numbers are in for Spiderman 3 and the box set.

130,000 for the S3
~70,000 for the box set.

Total sales really close to 200,000.

Official links and stuff should come soon. This comes from a forum and are certified number.
Ugh. I can't believe 130k actually chose to buy Spider-Man 3. It was so damn bad. Emo Spider-Man was horrible. I got forced to buy it with the boxset...but to those that actually chose to buy that instead of the Trilogy...shame on you!

The first one was the best, but I like what they did with Sandman, very cool effects. I was a bit bummed they didn't beef up Venom, I was expecting Venom as depicted in the comics, but they made him out as the same build of spiderman, just opposite personality :/

The bi-polar Parker was kinda hard to swallow, they could've done a lot better job with him, and his interactions with the other girls of interest felt rushed.

I could go on, but meh. I actually like it, but not much compared to the other two.
I went with 71:29.
That seems quite reasonable. There are ample numbskulls on the bluray.com forums thinking BD will go over 80. Egads.

I only got it because it came free with my purchase of the first two. :)

And I agree with Inf^Shini, I liked it, and wish they would have picked one villian instead of having 3, and done more with venom, but then again, the problem is I had such high expectation going for it because of Venom and the fact that I liked the first two so much. Spider-Man 2 is probably tied with Batman Begins for my favorite Superhero movie of all time.

I don't think it's appropriate to begin a "boy someone has bad taste in movies" rant in this thread. We all own at least 1 BR/HD that we probably wouldn't have purchased otherwise. Me? I own "The Patriot" as a result of the BOGO.

ROFL aint in the truth. I think mine would be Superman II: The Richard Donner's Cut, it was only 14.99 at Fry's like 6 months ago. Was the Patriot really that bad? People keep telling me to watch it and sense I have never seen it it's in my queue for Netflix.

Huh. Maybe I just thought "crap" due to the equation of "Mel Gibson" plus "big movie."

I may be wrong - I haven't watched it yet.

Doesn't change my point that, it we all laid our cards out, I don't think a single person here can claim to not own a single BD/HD they aren't at least mildly ashamed of having. A lil' "James Taylor" HD DVD, or perhaps "Chuck and Larry." Or maybe, if you own BR only, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" or something else, y'know?
and last I checked 14.99 at best buy. :)
Already got it at the B1G1 at Fry's ;O

I'm just lookin for some good prices on Speed and Enemy Of The State :/

enemy of the state was part of that BOGO during transformers week. That and Prestige are a great combination.
And Can Warner re-release Christmas Vacation so I can justify paying for it as a next-gen movie? :)

BTW, has anyone seen AC/DC Live Blu-ray? I am very interested in how the blu-ray turned out. Just wish I could listen to it on Geko's system. :(

I missed out on that one b/c it was the one week I was REALLY scrapin' for cash :/

I also gotta pick up The Departed, I remember asking about it earlier and was told it was a great movie, and myke was one of em.
How is a class action lawsuit on the PS2 a minority? When NES systems are still going strong. Since this is a video game forum. I will openly say that in this hobby Sony has reliability issues. Its well known. The gamecube doesn't have the failure rates the PS2 had, it doesn't even have the percentage of failure rates.

On top of that Sony will continuously copy instead of innovate. I doubt we need to get into that discussion.
NES systems going strong? fuck, I had problems with my NES when they were still making games for it, those pins are shit.

Of course Gamecube doesn't have the percentage of failure rates, it didn't really have the percentage of sales rates either.

We don't need to get into the Sony/Nintendo discussion. Why? Nintendo invented everything. Nintendo invented the analog stick, dual-analog sticks, the memory card, disk based systems, 3D, sunshine, avatars, and happiness. Oh wait, no they didn't. They can be as cocky as they want, they're lucky they couldn't afford to make a losing next-gen console and had to settle with the Wii. Reggie can criticize Microsoft and Sony all he wants for making next gen consoles, he knows in his smug little head that if they made their own under-powered gimmicky consoles, Nintendo would be right back in last place.

That's one of the best superhero movies ever .

Not just my opinion ... http://www.metacritic.com/video/titles/superman2

Uhh, yeah Cornerstone.
Superman II is great.

The Patriot, though a fun flick to eat popcorn too, is something to be ashamed of Myke. ;)

I'm trying to think of the crappiest movie I've bought yet for BD....
Probably Layer Cake. I bought it soley for it's perfect audio quality.

Nothing much else on BD I want at the moment to take advantage of Deep Discount's sale.
I'll probably just get the M.A.S.H. box set I've wanted since forever.

Your "second coming" avatar was better Rich.

That's my Phil Hartman Jesus .
Is Layer Cake anything like Snatch ?

What's Snatch like, I just saw a preview for it on TV. It's got Jason Statham and I love pretty much every movie he's been on since Transporter. I also have yet to see Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
That's my Phil Hartman Jesus .

It's nowhere near the level of Snatch or Lock Stock.
I guess it's worth a view though if you were a fan of both.

I loved Snatch and Lock Stock, but I wouldn't really say those two are anything like Jason Statham movies. Not really sure what to compare these movies too. They are just comedies with great dialog and a pretty interesting story. Just don't watch them expecting a typical Jason Statham movie.

By the way, any fans of these movies seen Revolver? It's by Guy Ritchie as well, but I never got a chance to see it. Reviews weren't as positive for it, but I still want to see sometime down the line. Just wondering how it compares to his other two movies.

I meant type of movie , not quality . Kinda like a British Tarantino movie .

Snatch is kinda meh , I own it on DVD for some reason , I never rewatched it .

I used to buy alot of DVD's for movies I was curious about , I figured why go to the movies and spend $30+ when I can own it for $15.

Lock Stock is by far better than Snatch, but I have a soft spot for it. I own Lock Stock but not Snatch.
Type of movie? Yeah I guess so. Fast dialogue, multiple intertwining story lines ("layers").

So why did you change your Morrisey girl Av ?

She wasn't a Morrissey girl.
She was a 60s (small) pop star and writer.
Mostly wrote the hits rather than recorded them.

I just really liked how the star looked in this pshopped form. Kinda funny.
I wasn't going to keep it but I got a lot of compliments about it.

It looked like a pic from a Smiths single or something , that was my first guess anyway .

Do you own the Donner Cut Superman 2 ?

Really? I enjoyed Snatch more. Then again, I've seen Lock Stock once years ago, and I own Snatch (opposite of you). Both are great, no doubt, but just seen Snatch more. Have you seen Revolver, dallow?

You're welcome to stop by anytime you like. I'll even let you watch Christmas Vacation if you want.

As for movies to be ashamed of owning, mine is "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". It was something I wanted to see in the theater, but never did, so I gave it a blind buy. WOW does that movie SUCK.

I see my local Walmart is selling blu ray and HD DVD, They had the spider man trilogy pack for 69.94.. I though that was a pretty good price.

Maybe this can be answered here... What HDMI cable do I need for the Toshiba A2 player? standard or like 1.3?

I searched AVS, wikipedia etc but no real answer that I have found.

I am probably going to be hooking it to the Toshiba 37hl67 LCD. Its only 720P set, but I don't want to skimp on the cable if I will get better picture etc.
It was ~$60ish pretty much everywhere last week. $60.99 at BB, $59.99 at Fry's, $60.95 at Amazon, etc.....
Hence my joke about Getting spider-man 3 free with the purchase of the first two. :)

And really? I will have to take you up on that offer, just need to get Crank so I can listen to that via PCM.

And Superman II is good? Wow, never realized it, I have always heard that it wasn't better than the first one and Hidefdigest didn't seem so positive about it either. I had actually never seen it, but it was an impulse buy so I have it.

Snake, 1.3 is backwards compatable so I would just get anyone off of monoprice and you will be fine.
However, at 720p with a 37inch tv from everything I have read you can't tell the difference between HDMI and Component. IIRC you can really only tell the difference between component and hdmi on 1080p projector screens 60inches or above. The main reasons people have HDMI is because A. lot of older TV's dont support 1080p over component, B. They are a lot more convenient, C. You can only upscale DVD's over HDMI or VGA, not component, so if your HD-DVD player does that HDMI is important and D. They are ridiculously cheap off of monoprice. :)

H. Conerstone...

The standard HDMI cables are cheap, the 1.3 are a bit more. Meritline also has HDMI pair for $10 at 6ft. 24awg however. Is the gauge important for anything other than potential interference. I know this is all similar to car audio which 8 years ago I was pretty up on (yeah time flies).

I don't want to waste money (i.e. like people that buy monster cable), but I don't want to miss something for $5-$10.

So your saying get the 1.3 cable, or will the non specified HDMI cable work the same on my setup?

I am running an older Sony (Me Sony? The horror!!) STR- DE675 specs:
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Sony-STR-DE675

So I am going to keep sound via optical for now.

Whoda thunk it ?

The Sony CEO says that the HD DVD and Blu-ray video formats are locked in a battle neither can win.

Sony's PlayStation 3 console also allows gamers to play Blu-ray movies, in competition with the HD DVD format favoured by Microsoft.

The two have been locked in their own format war, fighting to be the consumer's choice after the current favourite, DVD. HD DVD is backed by Toshiba and Microsoft, Blu-ray by Sony and Panasonic.

In June, major video rental store Blockbuster said it would be opting for Blu-ray in stores, and many would not be selling the HD DVD format at all. The company cited the fact that the PlayStation 3 uses Blu-ray as one of the reasons for its decision. In August, it was reported that Blu-ray was outselling HD DVD by 2-to-1.

However, also in August, major motion picture company Paramount Pictures decided to back HD DVD, and ceased production of most of its Blu-ray movies.

Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, told the AP news agency that he believes the two formats are now at a stalemate, "It's been a difficult fight. We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides." However, Stringer said that he believed it was mainly a matter of prestige, and that it would ultimately not matter which format won out in the end.

He also said that he wished he could travel back in time to before he was made CEO of the company, when he believes there was a chance to unite the camps into one format.
Interesting comment from Stringer.

Geko, I thought all HDMI cables were made equal in terms of what they transfer?
they are

Ok, just wondered why he pointed Snake in the direction of cables labeled 1.3.a.

There's some 1.3b devices coming out, watch your step!
Geko, I thought all HDMI cables were made equal in terms of what they transfer?
There's actually a few different categories. Will the lower category do everything you could ever need? Probably. Does it hurt to spend an extra $2 just in case? Probably not. Am I replacing my $11 Monoprice 24AWG HDMI cables with the newly-released $15 24AWG 1.3a Category 2 versions? Absolutely not.

If I have to buy more, I'll probably pay the extra few bucks. And I actually should (get some more), since the PS3 was a surprise purchase and is using a pack-in cable from my HD-A1 which is WAY too long. So I guess there's a couple more HDMI cables and a few more port savers (those 24AWG cables are HEAVY) in my future.... :)

Nice review for Rata 2 E.
5 star overall
5 star video
5 star audio

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture
In my recent Blu-ray review of 'Cars,' I raved about that disc's five-star video quality. It's a tough act to follow, but somehow 'Ratatouille' looks even better. Pixar and Disney present the film in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video at its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1, and every single pixel is, well, perfect. This is simply the best high-def presentation I've ever seen of an animated feature.
A direct digital-to-digital conversion, the transfer is as delicious as the greatest French feast you've ever had. The film's color palette is just gorgeous, with delicate shades of pinks, blues and greens contrasting wonderfully with deeper crimsons and purples. The finely-tuned shadings and gradients are so smoothly rendered that the image leaps off the screen. This is gloriously three-dimensional animation, and the sense of depth and texture to the image is exactly what high-def is all about. All other elements of the presentation are superb as well -- blacks, contrast and sharpness are spot-on. Likewise, the encode looks perfect, with no pixelization, macroblocking or banding/posteriztion.
Simply put, the picture quality of this Blu-ray edition of 'Ratatouille' absolutely flawless.

The Audio: Rating the Sound
Like the video, the uncompressed PCM 5.1 Surround audio track (48kHz/24-bit) on this Blu-ray disc is also terrific. Where 'Cars' is all dynamic and driving, 'Ratatouille' is more warm and subtle, but no less engrossing. This is a perfect example of how fantastic great sound design can be even when it's not ramming you over the head with bombast.
I hate to use silly cliches that sound like a TV commercial, but this soundtrack is not unlike a great fine wine. From every word of dialogue to the wonderful score by Michael Giacchino, it all just seems to slide out of the speakers. Completely constructed in the studio, it's just so clean and smooth. The use of surrounds is just as elegant. Atmosphere is king here, with transparent pans between channels and excellent spatiality, which delivers a constant sense of envelopment yet is never overpowering. And lest one think dynamics might be wimpy, low bass is certainly deep enough when needed (wait for the lightning bolt -- you'll feel it), and the robust highs are equally wonderful. And just as with 'Cars,' dialogue is perfectly rendered, and I never even thought of touching the volume button on my remote.
With such great video and audio, Pixar is now two for two with 'Ratatouille.' Splendid!

Final Thoughts
'Ratatouille' stands tall among the tallest of Pixar accomplishments -- it's adventurous, witty, visually captivating and utterly charming. This Blu-ray release is also fantastic, boasting absolutely perfect video and audio, plus a great package of extras. I've reviewed over 500 next-gen discs over the last year and a half, and not one has received a perfect five star rating overall, but there's a first time for everything and I'm happy to report that 'Ratatouille' is it. This is a must-own disc that no Blu-ray collection should be without.

Wow, that last comment is interesting, having one format from the begining would have been intersting...though if that happened I hoped that they would have kept the HD DVD name. Blu-Ray just sounds weird.

I agree with his comment, but it's surprising to hear him say that. I think Warner may have a chance at ending the war. If they go with BD, then the war has a good chance at ending. However, if they go with HD-DVD, I can't see either winning anytime soon, and combo players will just take over making it a two format gen.

I think its funny that you and Myke say that. I think that the war soley relys on WB if and when they go exclusive. If they go HD DVD, that's 2 major studios that crossed over to the red side that were neutral, that would only leave Fox and Disney as the two biggest Blu-Ray supporters, I don't see how this would prolong the war, instead Blu-Ray would just slowly die and eventually, Fox and Disney would jump over as well as the other exclusive studios. Same goes for if they choose Blu-Ray I think the days of HD DVD will be numbered.

Haha, nice Geko!

So Spidey 3 and boxset sold about 224,000 units total?

And 2001 BD made it to the top ten!
Guess it's outselling the HD DVD after all?

Only 1 HD DVD in the top ten.
