So now onto happier discussions.....WTF is up with the Kubrick releases? Yes he's an influential director, but they're still catalog titles so there can't be THAT much demand for them. Why are they all backordered, on both formats? I preordered The Shining and Full Metal Jacket from my goldbox (waiting on the others in the hopes that they'll also show up in my GB) weeks ago. The Shining shipped late and is coming on Thursday, but Amazon says I have to wait 6 weeks for
FMJ.

Wait, they've updated my FMJ order to say that I only have to wait 2 weeks. But it's listed as "in stock". This is too wierd....

There's been recent complaints about Amazon and new release HD titles.

Some people are have received their Transformers HD DVD just yesterday after pre-ordering them!

FWIW, I saw all the Kubrick titles at the store yesterday.

Thank Warner. Looks like they are still getting their distribution center up and running and some stores are getting some copies for some of the formats. My local BB has 2 lout of 5 Kubricks for HD DVD and 3 out of 5 for Blu-ray.

fucking warner store needs to fix their little situation asap..

like i mentioned i finally received an order this week from them...

hopefully moving forward they dont have any probs

FYI, the CC b1g1 free doesn't count, that was a mistake in CC system and therefore movies shouldn't count. I don't remember Casino Royale being on b1g1 free, all I know is I bought it the week it came out and don't remember one going on for at least a while. Either way, I am glad Blu-ray is doing all these b1g1, will increase sales and get more people buying the movies. :)

YEah, Warner Store sucks, when I ordered from there it took them about 2 weeks just to ship the order, and that was TMNT the day it came out. That isn't near as bad as some of your experiences but still ridiculous none-the-less.

And does anyone want to tell me why USPS decides that the most efficient route to get from Middle California to Phoenix is by going through Denver?

Casino Royale was not part of the glitch and was apart of the official sale. There was a list of titles posted above the Blu Ray's at my store and it was on it.
And does anyone want to tell me why USPS decides that the most efficient route to get from Middle California to Phoenix is by going through Denver?
Don't even get me started on delivery services. :) FedEx SmartPost took NINE DAYS to deliver a package to me from less than 300 miles away. It started at the other end of Illinois (SW of me), went to a small town outside of St. Louis and sat for two days (further SW). Then it went to a small town outside of Milwaukee (N of me) and sat for four days. Then it was delivered to the regional post office, and the USPS dropped it on my stoop the next day.

If it's a recent order/shipment, it might be due to the fires in SoCal, where I'm at.

Here's the original story with a bit more info:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071023/tc_nm/bluray_hddvd_dc_1

Note I'm not claiming HiDef Digest's summary is inaccurate. There's just more data to play with in the Reuters report.

Of particular note is that Transformers and 300 combined make up 3 out of 425 SKUs released this year, but 1 out of every 5 discs sold in 2007. Or going SI, 3 out of 705 SKUs released, 1 out of 8 discs sold.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we get the final 2007 numbers in January and find out that 1 out of 3 discs sold during the year was 300, Transformers, or Spiderman 3.

Also worth noting that sales were 70:30 in favor of Blu-Ray in Q1, 64:36 in Q2, and 62:38 in Q3. With volume highest in Q3 by a wide margin. It appears that the ratio has in fact not been 66:34 for quite some time now. My 60:40 guess for the past 6-8 weeks is either right on or pretty damn close. :)
If it's a recent order/shipment, it might be due to the fires in SoCal, where I'm at.
They did it last time too, I don't know how that would make a difference because the I-10 goes know where near San Diego.

And Geko, with Titles like Die Hard, POTC, Cars and Spider-man, I think Blu-ray will see a huge advantage this christmas season.

Good news and bad news on the Blu-Ray standalone player front:

http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9803654-7.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5

The Samsung BD-P2400 is now officially cancelled. However, their BD-UP5000 combo player will also be the first profile 1.1-capable standalone player to be released. It will not be 1.1 compliant out of the box, but all of the necessary hardware is present and will need only a firmware update to bring it up to spec. Best Buy, ABT Electronics, and other places are currently taking preorders at $799.

The BD-UP5000 still has the HQV. Costs a bit more, of course, but I don't think it's too much more....and has the added advantages of HD DVD playback and 1.1 compatibility.

Will it be compatible with HDi?

Yes, it is fully HD DVD compliant, and as such has a network port, 256Mb of persistent storage, supports HDi, menus, web access, PiP and any other interactivity that HD DVD discs can provide. It also has both internal decoding and bitstream output for:
Dolby Digital
DTS
LPCM
Dolby Digital Plus
TrueHD
DTS-HD High Resolution
DTS-HD Master Audio

Shit like this is why I support Blu Ray. fucking my first copy was all fucked up out of the package and now I have to wait 10 minutes for the movie to load before I can watch that shit. AIDS.
Its downloading an update. Either let it download, or sign out of XBL before watching it  :D

BTW, 10 minutes is an extreme example of time. I was able to DL the update in 2-3 minutes and I was in the process of downloading a torrent at the same time.

wal-mart198.jpg

Each Wal-Mart will be getting 18-30 and be available for purchase at all stores around November 3rd. BF deals are rumored from several Wal-Mart employees with a unique SKU.
That's all have you have to say?

Haha. Right.
This thread reeks of a certain vinegar and water combination .

You Blu-Ray guys are relentless , it's kind of entertaining to read every once in a while .

Keep up the good work .

The $199 HD-DVD players seemed like more of a big deal when the announcement was first made (sometime this summer, I think?). HD-DVD players have been pretty close to the $199 price point as of late and with the free HD-DVDs that many come with, this no longer seems as good a deal as it was when first announced. Still a pretty good deal, though. Wonder how quickly people will jump on them.

HD DVD players have never been $199 in any ad. While you could find them at a few random online stores for this price or close to it, no retail store has ever set the price this low. Couple this with 5 free movies and its a pretty damn good deal.

January for Samsung to update to Profile 1.1?

You know what that means, it was delayed again 3 months. Wonderful news. They will sell tons of obsolete Profile 1.0 players this Christmas and piss off all those new customers when some features won't work. Kudos, BDA!

Yea, that's what I was saying. They have been close to that price point. At the time the announcement was made, HD-DVD players (as well as BD players) were much more expensive, and the deal seemed like a much bigger deal. Just saying that this huge deal doesn't seem so huge any more, considering how cheap the players have been going for as of late.

Is this the no-name brand from China model?
Is this the no-name brand from China model?
No, this is the Toshiba A2 which is currently $299 (or $249 at some places).
Is this the no-name brand from China model?
No, it's the discontinued Toshiba HD-A2.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Amazon (the site of all reliable data ) has presold out of the 40GB PS3 model with Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray in it.
Wow, looks like the BDA already knows they lost the week and are trying to get this positive article out ASAP before Friday hits and the HD DVD group announces the numbers :D
The original article. Reuters and Home Media Magazine =/= BDA. But, hey...you're the guy who won't believe the New York Times, so this is all par for the course, I reckon.

In the end, you know what? I'll take 51 out of 52 weeks outselling HD at an average of 2 to 1. You can have your one week and your one title. Tell me, how many copies of "Blades of Glory" have been sold thus far?
Wow, looks like the BDA already knows they lost the week and are trying to get this positive article out ASAP before Friday hits and the HD DVD group announces the numbers :D
They should reveal how many Blu-Ray discs were given away .
Probably close to 1/3 .

oh ok. Makes it quite a better then.

Winning one week when the competition is beating you 2:1, isn't really something to boast about.

You have two choices:

1) Criticize the mincing and prattling going on in here, as you've done thus far, or
2) Join us in said mincing and prattling.

Doing both is not an option, unless you want to be a buffoon like Gizmo. Are we clear?

Winning 2:1 buy a couple thousand discs each week is not something to boast about either.

Yeah, be like myke because he would only buy 3 out of 350 HD DVD movies available. He wouldn't even say what 2 out of 3 of them are. He's super awesome. He keeps a thesaurus by his computer at all times.

But doing it *every* week certainly is.
Winning 2:1 buy a couple thousand discs each week is not something to boast about either.
It is when compared to boasting about a single week and a single movie. But, if you want to compare them to DVD, you're right, neither have much to boast about. However, that really isn't a fair comparison. BD vs HD is a perfectly fair comparison, so boasting about a victory against a direct competitor seems perfectly valid at this point.

Honestly, outside of Lebowski, I couldn't tell you what the others are. It's not as if I'm hiding some major league secret from you (insert your mom joke here), I just don't know what other HD DVD movies I'd buy. Link me to the 350 movies, and I'll take a glance and tell you what I'm jealous of. Honest to goodness. After all, you have done more to support Blu-Ray than I have, so you deserve it.

EDIT: Oh, no. I don't use a thesaurus. I use me noggin. Pardon me if it functions better than average. Practice makes perfect, you know.

To be honest, there aren't many 'must haves' on either format for me, so someone liking only a select few from HD-DVDs selection isn't too surprising.

Amazon.com, baby. Tons of HD DVD movies there.
As Ive said before, I want to watch HDM, so I have both formats. I have almost 100 movies between both formats...its getting sick now.

Thanks for nothing, ya lazy fuck.

So, here goes:
Batman Begins
The Big Lebowski
...that's it, really. If I owned an HD DVD player, I'd probably pick up Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but I don't consider either amazing enough to motivate me to want to buy a player, if you can appreciate the distinction. I have no doubt that you can't.

It's hard to retaliate to a post if you have to keep looking up the words it consists of .

Universal is probably my 2nd favorite studio , that being said the choice is already made for me .

You did it!

IIs The Big Lewoski any good? I got it but have yet to watch it.

It's one of my top five movies. I'm not one of those folks who thinks that the Coen brothers put out amazing films every time (though Raising Arizona was incredible as well), but Lebowski is just amazing on every level.

Leave the thread and go watch it now. Goddamn you're missing out.

I expect a full report.

I will watch it Saturday for sure.

No (just using Universal) Being John Malkovich, Casino, Carlito's Way, Deer Hunter, Fear & Loathing, Eternal Sunshine, King Kong, Pianist or The Sting?
IIs The Big Lewoski any good? I got it but have yet to watch it.
Argh, what's the matter with you? Watch it immedately. Fantastic/hilarious movie in a very weird way. Also the HD-DVD looks pretty good.
No (just using Universal) Being John Malkovich, Casino, Carlito's Way, Deer Hunter, Fear & Loathing, Eternal Sunshine, King Kong, Pianist or The Sting?
No, I own Goodfellas, no, no, cute but not something I'd own, totally uninterested, ditto, and maybe, but not definitely.

Personal taste, really. That's all.

On HD DVD I would like Grand Prix, Adventures of Robin Hood, and maybe a couple others.

Ricklough, why don't you start by saying why you feel HD DVD is the choice for you other than Universal.
Why do you feel HD DVD is the superior media technically?
