Lost Odyssey - Gen. Discussion & Info
i have a question about experience and leveling up -

as i understand it, there's a certain level cap for each area. also, there are random encounters. so, are you guys just running around in circles looking for an encounter to max out on that cap, or are you guys just running through like normal and whatever happens happens?
The area should be big enough each time that you hit the cap by just running through like normal.

Yeah, and you hit the cap pretty fast normally (where you slow WAY down in gaining experience). There was one area towards the end though where I spent HOURS leveling up, as it didn't seem to have the same sort of cap.

Oh cool...is that Snake? Naked Snake in your avatar?? I am LOVING Metal Gear Solid 4 (and I hated 3...although this is so good I'm thinking I need to go back and give it a second chance).

The only place I grinded was for the first boss. After that, just fighting in all random battles kept me at a high enough level that I rarely if ever died.
i'm not very grind happy (at least not for non-mmo), so i hope i'll do ok by running through (and running instead of jogging)
You will do fine, I think there was only two bosses in the ENTIRE game that gave me trouble.

But that's not counting the sidequests though...

Can I miss dreams, or is it like other games where I'm returning to previous places? And what's the deal with the seeds? Should I go for all 99?

You can miss all kinds of dreams. I never found most of them. I guess there's some "achievement" for finding all those seeds? If you care about that sort of thing then go for it, otherwise just enjoy the gameplay and story.

To my knowledge, any dreams that you miss can be obtained once the world opens up in the middle of disc 4. I had to find four or five that I missed, so I assume the others can also be found.

There is no achievement for the seeds themselves, but finding them all is necessary for the Treasure Trove and immortal skill mastery achievements.

Does collecting seeds take hours upon hours? I'm considering doing it but if it's one of those things where it takes 2 hours just to find one of them, I might just forget about it.

Well, if you're pretty thorough you can find the majority of seeds as you progress through the game. Then there are only a handful that you'll need to go out of your way for. If you miss a bunch, though, and aren't sure which ones they are, it's a HORRIBLE hassle getting them. After going through the game and quickly consulting some FAQs for ones that I knew I'd missed, I still needed 5 and spent hours getting them. If you're a completionist, sure. If you're anything less, don't bother. Treasure Trove is very similar, but even more extreme in the amount of diligence it takes.

Man, what in the hell was up with that first boss fight? That came out of nowhere.

Don't worry, the first two bosses are tough but after that the game is very easy (at least what I've seen of it so far).

He kept attacking Jansen and killing him when I needed to use his Flare:bomb:. I got it on my 3rd try. I was level 13. Was I supposed to be a higher level or something?

I think i was level 14 for the first boss. Basically have Jansen cast spells the entire time. It pays to grind a bit to have your immortals learn the accessories, that way you can pass them off to your other characters. You should get the eGuide (PDF), which i used for the beginning of the game, but now mainly for items. I'm about 1-2 levels above what i need to be for boss battles now and it really pays off.

Ah, that first boss destroyed me as well. Only tried it once, but it really did just come out of nowhere.. I need to get back to this game, it's been a week since I've gotten a chance to sit down with it.

I got whupped like 8x  was level 11. I just had Jansen use healing items every round. It seemed whenever i did a magical attack the stupid guys would do 1 hit kills on me so i finally stopped doing that and just did manual attacks, and i beat them the first time i tried the new tactic.

I just all out attacked the first boss and it actually worked. To make you guys feel better, I lost like 6 times before I finally beat him.

Been playing this game for a few weeks now. On disk 3. I'm not sure if it was discussed (probably was) but did anyone else do some mega-level grinding on that little cove near Numara? It took me 2 hours to get everyone at level 42-44. I feel completly over-powered now.

As mentioned earlier the first two boss fights were ridiculus, but fun. I was looking forward to the entire game being this difficult. I was dissapointed to find out that's not the case.

I've been playing this game on and off throughout the summer (whenever I can check it out from my library) and I'm currently working on the achievements before I enter
Grand Staff.
I might try to get all the seeds but I'm not going to even attempt Treasure Trove.

I went through without any kind of faqs or walkthrough, so even though I was trying to be thoughrow I probably missed a ton of seeds. It's too much of a pain now to go back and see which ones I missed.

It's not too bad. I did it blind, but here's a guide that was posted earlier in the thread.

You can rent 360 games at your Library? I thought they always bitched about kids playing too many games and not enough reading books, hypacrites

haha maybe it is because RPGs have more reading in them. :D

That's AWESOME! I bet sooner or later that'll be fairly common-I mean most libraries seem to have DVDs. I'd be glad to donate some games as I finish them if my library carried them.

The libraries around here have some graphic novels, although unfortunately not many. They JUST implemented a new computer system where supposedly you can request stuff online from other libraries and it ships to your library, so I really should check that out.

I am a little peeved with LO right now. I am sure it has been debated in this thread a few times, but I missed out on the Barricadus and Shieldus spells that you can purchase at the Experimental Staff. Not wanting anything spoiled, I have stayed away from discussions and such and did not know that there was a glitch for those items and I would not be able to purchase them in the Auction House. I just spent about an additional 25 hours tracking down and learning spells and skills to get the Master Achievements for all the Immortals and to get the 'Find every spell' Achievement as well.

25 hours wasted. It would have been the first game I would have gotten 1000/1000 points on. I normally don't play for points, but since I was digging LO so much and wanted to accomplish everything in this game, I thought I would do so.

I've been able to go fight the final boss battle for some time and now have lost all motivation to do so. I was planning on picking up the DLC as well afterwards, but once again, I am doubtful on this now as well.

Anybody else have this happen to them, after wasting numerous hours building up to something you have no hope to achieve?

I'm pretty sure that you can purchase missed spells from the Experimental Staff. As far as I knew, the only place that has 2 spells that you can miss is Gohtza.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That's exactly what the libraries around me do. There is a huge online catalog where you can log in and request items from any of the libraries. When my spot in line for an item comes up they send it to my town's library and hold it for a few days until I pick it up. It's an extremely useful service that essentially gives me access to all the movies and books I could ever want. I haven't had to buy any books or pay to rent a movie for many years.

Only one or two of the libraries carry video games.

I hope you are right. ;)

If this can be confirmed, can you point me in the correct direction then for those two spells from the Experimental Staff? I have everything the Auction House can sell, done every side quest..nothing to do but go to the final boss area at this point.

Turns out I was half right. I looked it up. Shieldus and Barricadus are the two spells that are available in the Experimental Staff, but you have a second chance to buy them in Gohtza.

So if you missed them both times, you're outta luck.

Quick question for anyone who can help me. I am on the experimental staff level on disc 2 and I can not seem to steal the guard passes with Jansen. Wheneve I steal with him he always fails, is there something that I need to do special to steal with him? I did get the pick pocket rings, but I would like to use the "Steal" command every now and than.

I just picked this game up from target on clearance and was wondering where I should look for a replacement case for this game. I looked at meritline, but I didn't see any cases that liked. None of them had a spot for a manual.

Same thing for me. I've searched the thread and didn't see any spots listed.
Check the following thread: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=179672&highlight=lost+odyssey&page=2

I grabbed a clear 4-disc DVD case that had a spot for the manual. I even posted pictures :D The manual is a somewhat tight fit, but nothing major.
But I want a green case. =( But I'm not bitching! Thanks for the info, I may take the plunge on the case.
There was a site selling four disc DVD cases for .46 cents plus shipping... wonder which site that was. It wasn't green either.
Did you learn steal with Kaim and Seth? Stealing with 3 characters is really faster.
Yeah, I have learned everyones skill so far, I do not like wasting three people in one turn to steal though. Jansen always fails and it does not seem to be a skill of his at all.

I just got LO and a quick question. As someone who isn't proficient at all at jrpg's will LO kick my ass? the only reason I ask is, I just made it to the Griffen which is the first boss battle in the game. and he is kicking my ass everytime.

That first boss was the *only* trouble (outside of the DLC dungeon) I had with the game. Just go back and level up a bit before taking him on.

After that, the game was pretty easy. I never really had to stop and level up my characters.

As Rig said, the first boss is the hardest. Completely wierd, huh? It's literally harder than the final boss in the game. WAY too hard, and I almost gave up. Took me maybe 6 tries before I just lucked out. Later on there were maybe one or two other bosses that were hard, but not that hard, and then it evened out.

I think Lost Odyssey is one of the better places to start playing Japanese RPGs (the others being probably Final Fantasy 6-10, or Chrono Trigger-9 and 10 especially). All those games (including Lost Odyssey) are by Hironubu Sakaguchi (except I'm sure i just misspelled his name, again).

Oh, and Mass Effect is awesome if you like science fiction (although it's American...or Canadian I guess).

EDIT: Well, I guess I'd stick Lunar 1 in there too as a nice place to start (but considering the original came out in like '93... :D the recent games baring it's name are supposed to be terrible though)

ya..I actually just beat mass effect.. great game! Beat the griffen, got my characters up to 15 and he was pretty easy. why does every jrpg main character have to be so feminine and emo?
the recent games baring it's name are supposed to be terrible though)
Truth.

Lunar: Dragon Song should never be played.
