Alright, here we go. This isn’t a straight-up power rankings, meaning I’m not ranking teams from best to worst (although that may end up being the case when it’s all written out anyways, at least partly). Essentially I looked at current record and remaining schedule strength and played odds maker for playoff seeding.
NFC
1. New Orleans Saints, 12-0 (bye)
Remaining h2h games: None
After defeating their final obstacle in the Ravens last week, the Saints are poised to walk into the playoffs without a loss. Now they have yet to run into the likes of the Giants and Niners – some of the top teams in the NFC – and some could say their schedule was soft with no divisional rivals but they won the games they needed to and you cannot deny this high-flying offense led by Drew Brees.
2. New York Giants, 11-1 (bye)
Remaining h2h games: Cowboys
Barring a collapse vs a CPU opponent, even a loss to the Cowboys won’t keep them out of the second seed. This year, the Giants were challenged more than ever before, playing plenty of close games and having to play for periods without their star QB Eli Manning, but they came out of it mostly unscathed. Their one loss came thanks to the rival Cowboys earlier in the season, with Manning available. Their season winds down in Dallas and if they end up getting swept in the season series the Giants will be crossing their fingers that the Cowboys don't sneak into the playoffs.
3. San Francisco 49ers, 9-3
Remaining h2h games: None
The Niners have shown flashes of brilliance in the limited h2h games they’ve had this year, convincingly beating up on the Bears and more recently squeezing out the W against a tough Chargers team. They missed out of the opportunity to test themselves against the Giants and Saints earlier in the season (correct me if I’m wrong, I think this is when he was dealing with the RROD), but this team has proved it’s ready for the playoffs to begin.
4. Chicago Bears, 9-3
Remaining h2h games: Lions
This week was a huge blow to Chicago’s chances of sneaking in as the #3 seed with a loss the Giants. If only the Niners had another h2h game then perhaps this team could make up ground, instead they could be at risk to be leap frogged by the Lions now. Detroit and Chicago will meet in Week 16 with only a game separating them at the moment. The Bears will need to have a strong showing or they could end up limping into the playoffs. Out of the team’s 4 losses, only 2 of them were conference losses (Niners, Giants) and Chicago should avoid both of those teams until the NFC Championship game, which could work in their favor.
5. Minnesota Vikings, 7-5
Remaining h2h games: Jets, Pats, Lions
What a toss up these last 2 spots are going to be. Both the Lions and Vikings are looking at tough schedules with a tied record. And the Vikings have lost 3 out of their last 4 games (Giants, Saints, Eagles), but they’ve beaten the Lions once already this season and if they do it again they should be able to grab the first Wild Card spot. Last week’s close loss to the Eagles may end up hurting a lot more than initially expected. If the team continues to stumble as the season comes to a close, they could see themselves watching the playoffs from home.
6. Detroit Lions, 7-5
Remaining h2h games: Jets, Bears, Vikings
The Lions aren’t without their own recent close loss that may come back and bite them in the ass. Falling to the Patriots two weeks ago by 5, makes these next 4 games all the more important. They take on the top team in the AFC tonight in the New York Jets, followed by division rival Chicago who already has a W against Detroit this season. If the Lions end the season getting swept in h2h games then they will be looking at an 8-8 record, which may just be enough to sneak into the last spot in the playoffs but it’s not going to look pretty.
On the outside looking in:
Philadelphia Eagles, 5-7
Remaining h2h games: Cowboys, Titans
With a win against the Cowboys once already this season and with two vs CPU games to close out the year, the Eagles could make a last second bid for a playoff spot. Facing a tough Titans team this week doesn’t help their cause, but if they win their last 3 games (easier said than done) then they too will be sitting on an 8-8 record and will be winners of the tiebreaker with the Lions. It’s a lot to ask for, but with a big win over the Vikings last week the Eagles have put themselves in position to make the post-season.
Dallas Cowboys, 5-7
Remaining h2h games: Eagles, Titans, Giants
After coming off a big win against the Giants in Week 10, the Cowboys looked to turning into one of the elite teams of the NFC. Unfortunately, their head coach had to take a leave of absence immediately after the game, which is being pointed to now as a momentum killer for the team. Reeling off two losses to the Colts and the Texans, and barely squeezing by the Redskins last week, the Cowboys aren’t down and out quite yet but the team can only afford to lose one more game or they will have to start thinking about the draft.
ps: I'll do the AFC a little later, need to grab some lunch and kick back after that thing. A little longer than I expected haha but it was fun.
