I feel the same way, but i'm sure the game will be fun as all hell.

Nintendo likes to keep things simple, as you can tell w/ the white backgrounds on their system, shop, color of the system, and even smash has a white menu background. :D

It got a 9.0 from the May 2008 Nintendo Power. I think Double Dash and MKDS got the requisite 100% (or damn near) for big profile first-party titles, so this isn't exactly a ringing endorsement from NP. For those numerologists who say "9/10 is still an A," I'd refer them to other recent, high profile, first-party titles that got a 9 from NP. Probably not a bad list of games (WarioWare? Excite Truck?), but they aren't the grade-A stuff that we were hoping MK Wii might turn out to be.

Just over 3 weeks to find out for ourselves stateside.

I have to admit I haven't been following the game much at all (given that I'll be getting it for sure anyway). I'm surprised at all the comments about bad graphics though. MKDD is still a very sharp-looking game with some of the best graphics of last gen (IMO). I'm surprised the Wii version would be anything worse than that (and would hope for better). As long as the framerate is rock solid, which is pretty important on a game like this, and the graphics aren't a big step back I guess that will be OK, though somewhat disappointing.

I'll have to check out some of these vids though I find those never seem to capture what the game is actually like (not to mention many have severe compression artifacts).

In any case, if anyone is interested most normal Blockbuster stores (not just Gamerush) have this available for preorder. They did the same for SSBB and are doing it also for GTA IV. Since I have a Blockbuster 1/2 mile from my house but the nearest Gamestop and Gamecrazy (where I also have credit to burn) are 10 miles away I was all over this. That reminds me - I still need to go to a Gamestop and get my $50 back for the SSBB I never picked up there ;).

Since Future took over NP, their reviews of Nintendo first party games have been more realistic IMO. I guess 9/10 is the new 7/10 when it comes to "big" titles now? If that is the case, I'm done with reviews. I'm certainly glad I ignored all the review scores on No More Heroes.

Nah, the comment was regarding Nintendo Power's history of reviews of big first-party titles. You're right, though: I had forgotten about Future adding NP to their collection of gaming mags, so doing a flat comparison of MK to games that received similar scores in the past isn't fair given the editorial change last fall.

I haven't played it, but I suspect No More Heroes is one of those games that confounds the review system in the "out of 10" or "out of 5 stars" sense. I dunno. I'm thinking of God Hand specifically as an analogue. I don't think Mario Kart will be as difficult for reviewers to pick up and critique, and thus it won't defy the system the way a less conventional/more obscure game might.

Speed boost can only be enabled thru wiimote waggle.
WRONG. Read it again--it says "certain maneuvers," NOT "mini-turbos." This confirms what we've read in other previews: stunts are waggle only. My understanding from previews is that non-wagglers will be able to initiate MTs through sustained slides only, while wagglers will be able to use slide MTs and the small MTs associated with landing after a successful stunt. The tiny MT that is associated with a stunt probably isn't going to give wagglers a competitive advantage over non-wagglers.

As far as boosting goes, it sounds like it's going to come down to where/when you trigger the slide MTs and shroom use--stunts are just tacked on to keep things XTREEEEM.

The tricks can be done with the CC or GC controller, just need to use the dpad.

The "motion" part is gone with those controllers, not the effect in game.

I'd like to make sure people see this again as it is correct. The only missing features are shaking the remote to do tricks, and IR pointing functionality.

As as daroga said, tricks are mapped to the d-pad on the CC and GC controller, as confirmed by IGN.
I'm trying to not be all that invested in this game, but everyone seems to be really liking it.

mario kart games are made of win. That said if nintendo pulls another bullshit featurless online like they did with smash bros then it will be the last wii game i buy for a long ass time. The online in brawl is atrocious and is totally ruined by nintendo's paranoia of child rapists trying to get kids online. I'm praying nintendo doesnt fuck this up because before this generation i was a hardcore nintendo fanboy.

I don't even believe this is coming out in like two weeks.

This feels way more under the radar than a normal 'big' Nintendo release, or I just don't care as much as I should.

I'm not honestly sure which it is.

I agree and I think maybe much of the attention has been stolen away by Smash Bros. I care more about this than I do the other but it seems Mario Kart isn't getting hype like I expect it would.

I'm right there with you. I can't figure out if I'm not excited because I just don't care, or because of lack of hype. I had no interest in Smash Bros, but there was so much hype that I almost bought it just because and found myself excited for other gamers just because it was coming out. Pretty much the only thing I've seen about Mario Kart though is this thread, and even that's not that hype-filled.

Nintendo shows no signs of changing their online policies for first-party titles. All first-party games will use game-specific friend codes and will have very limited online functionality. Third-party games are free to ditch friend codes and implement any features they choose.

At this point I'm beginning to think that the child safety paranoia is just an excuse to not have to implement real online features. When you put massive limits on who and what people can play on the service there's less software to write and less network and server support to deal with.

I'm pretty excited about it, but my wife is really anxious for this to arrive. She really loved Double Dash and is very excited to play this one. I sent her the link to the official MK Wii site and she mentioned that the Wii Wheel looks really cool.

This will be fun for us since we used to play Double Dash all the time and played against her in-laws quite a bit. Being able to play them over the internet should be pretty fun.

I'm slowly pulling her into gaming. She is hooked on Picross DS, asked me to buy Zack and Wiki, is playing Professor Layton, and is excited about playing Mario Kart Wii. She will be converted very soon

The only mario karts I've played is the Snes one and the DS one, but I'll wait a bit to see how people like it and I'll give it a chance since it comes with a wheel.

I feel the exact same way as both of you. I'd honestly question buying it if it weren't for the fact that I have $25 in credit at BB, and this is the only new game coming out before it expires.

Double Dash would arguably be better for wife interactions due to the fact that you can play through the main GP in co-op mode.

We're all excited from Kart. I think some of the hype is being gobbled up by GTA IV, which is a media machine the likes of which aren't often seen.

Hey, y'all.

So yesterday, I went to the Mario Kart Driving School Stop in San Diego. As big of a truck they came in (pics to follow), they tucked it away well. Anywho, once I found it, I didn't have to wait long before I got to play MKW--first, I did Vs mode with another guy...then he left, so I did Grand Prix by myself--did 50cc Mushroom Cup, and started one race on Flower Cup until I had to concede my spot to a pair of kids.

I've always like Mario Kart, and I did like MKW quite a bit. Now, the turning's very sensitive--in the first race, it didn't take much of a turn to send me veering across the track, but I got the hang of it pretty soon. However, I couldn't seem to find a jump button; that may have been because I set my controls to Automatic (in GP, if you highlight Auto, it'll say on the bottom, "Automatic drifting with no Mini-Turbos"), as opposed to Manual, which I never tried (but does enable Mini-Turbos). However, once I got the timing down on the jumps, I got my boosts that way.

One thing I wasn't too keen on was that it seemed like the CPUs throw a ton more shells (and other items) than before. In the 3rd race of Mushroom Cup (the Factory stage), in the last lap, I got his by a green shell, a red shell, and a blue shell in rapid succession; needless to say, I ended up 3rd in that race. However, I do like that when a shell is approaching (red or blue, can't recall green), an icon and an arrow shows up; that way, if you've got a banana peel, you can hold it out and deflect the Red Shell. (Obviously, it won't work for blue.:p)

Now, as for the free swag and the scene itself, I've got some pix:
mkwtent2.jpg

This is the tent where most of the stations were. It was pretty simple--just some Wiis, flat screens (behind white covers to match the décor), and some wooden folding chairs; 2 per station. There was also a replica Kart in the center where you could get your picture taken; more on that later. Oh, and apologies for not getting the interior, but my description pretty much says it all. :whistle2:? Oh, and you can see the staff here, as well...
mkwback2.jpg

Here's a close-up of the back of the coveralls. I'd love to get one of these...
Actually, speaking of clothing, I wore my Wii hoodie from Hot Topic to this event, and I got a positive comment from both one of the staff, as well as a random bypasser. Dress to impress, I always say. :applause:

mkwtruck3.jpg

Here's the truck--I know it's kinda' hard to see inside (used my celly to snap these shots), but inside were 4 additional playing stations: 2 on the wall, and 2 within Karts, for that "feel like you're actually racing" feeling. I didn't feel like waiting around for this. :whistle2:|
Here's the back of the truck; a little easier to see inside:
mkwtruck4.jpg

Okay, now here's the free swag I got:

mkwplate.jpg

A faux license plate--it actually fits American license plate mounts, but I decided to put mine up on my bedroom wall.

mkwlicense.jpg

A faux driver's license--you filled out your name, a nickname, city/state, birthday, favorite Mario Kart player, and favorite item (including the new ones in MKW), then they take your picture, and voila! I forgot to take my glasses off; even though it was cloudy outside, my Transitions lenses activated. But, meh, whatever...

mkwfresh.jpg

A real air freshener--What does it smell like?

An Italian plumber.

...

Yes, I'm joking. Actually, the scent reminds me of oranges n' cream...dunno' how that fits with Mario Kart, but that's just me. Oh, and don't sniff it too closely, it'll give ya' a headache.

mkwcard.jpg

And, there's this card--remember how I said that you could get your picture taken in a Kart inside the tent? You didn't get the picture right then and there--instead, they gave you this card, and you use the code above to retrieve your picture. They just put up the link for photos, so I'm gonna' get mine right now...
...
Well, it seems the link leads to nowhere at the moment. Oh well, I'll share it with y'all later.

Enjoy!

^ ^ ^ Dude that is awesome. It would be sick to play MKW inside an actual kart like you said they had. Btw dude, did you try out the motorcycles? How were they if you did.
