Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info

Man, the remote/chuck makes a huge difference. I've been playing the 50cc and getting golds with the wheel, but then I played leaf cup with the remote/nunchuk and it was just a fucking shut-out. I finally got a star for my rank too :p.

EDIT: I'll be around at 10 tonight to play. Somebody PM me if I don't show up right away as I might be watching TV/surfing some other site.

As far as characters, I've always used Bowser in Kart, but
Rosalina
controls leagues better than he does without sacrificing much in acceleration or weight- plus that
Luna
following you around is money.
I'm not calling you out on this, Greedo, so don't take offense, but aren't class and kart type the only thing that determines acceleration, speed, etc.?

I've been going at things with the understanding that the character doesn't factor into it at all outside of that character's class (in the sense that the choice of class determines which 8 karts/bikes you can select from). Hence, a Bullet Bike driven by Koopa Troopa should perform exactly the same as one driven by Dry Bones.

I dunno. This may be a job for GameFAQs.

I've been using the wheel for the entire game. In 150cc races I barely make it to first overall in points. I just tried 150cc Leaf Cup with the nunchuk and double starred it. Definitely more precise since I don't have to be careful about doing tricks or wheelies and I can better spot adjust my direction.

Though the outstanding win could also be due to the fact that I did not see a single blue shell for the entire race and barely any reds actually got the chance to hit me. The only time I fell from first place was when I made driving mistakes like driving off the road or hitting obstacles.

From what I read, each character gives slight boosts to different stats. Which is probably why Funky Kong is so popular among time trials.

no, the characters do as well. not to mention that some bikes and karts are specific to each character. I dunno how many times that bastard bowser has knocked me off the track. that motherfucker

Wow, I'm glad I asked. I've been using my Mii almost exclusively. Wonder what the results would be with someone else...

I'm online right now if anybody wants to play. 10PM EST is a little late for me. (Had a late night last night and I fail at staying up "late" on a weeknight. 10PM is when I usually go to bed.)
I almost gave up on the game last night after only 20 minutes of local multiplayer with my roommates. It just seemed like the same-old, same-old- something I could sell and still have '64 to fall back on. I went to work and came back 5 hours later to find the three of them ravenously addicted. So I gave it another shot, and I gotta say that this is quickly becoming my second favorite Mario Kart now, behind '64. The motorcycles add a completely fresh take on the racing, and they're all we ever use. With all the variety, it may keep us occupied for quite some time.

i had a similar feeling about this game at first. i'm now completely addicted.. imo, this might be as good as (dare i say) the n64 version. i wish my wii didn't tell me how long i played today.

it's all about yoshi.

Alright, I've got a room waiting. If you want in and I don't have your code (still haven't managed to add anyone beyond those who PM'd me), give it to me and we'll get crackin.

Edit: Looks like daroga's got the room.

I haven't done the friend code exchange yet. Sorry. I'm just playing it with my girlfriend mostly, but in a week or two I'll take the time to add a bunch of people so we can kart together.

Well I guess I'm done for tonight since it disconnected and I should probably do something else, lol. Good games, I did pretty good the first set!

Just had some nice random regional races. It makes me really wish I could friend request the people I race. Interesting note, all the top players in that series of races were golden wheel users.

I'll sit online for a bit in case anyone feels like racing.

How long do you have to play with the wheel to be a golden wheel user?!
BTW I had fun tonight. Sorry I could only do 1 game, but I had to go.
Hey, I did WELL with my wheel..considering I was the only one :p

I'M USING MY Wii WHEEL!

Just use the wheel a lot and eventually you'll get it. Someone mention on gfaqs that its 100 races with above 50% wheel usage. I'm not sure when I got it, but right now I'm at 209 races with 91% wheel use.

I guess I should get online... I've been sitting around all day beating friends' time trials.

Speaking of which, I hate how you can't race a friend's ghost unless they challenge you...

Does requesting a challenge only send your ghost to them? I was surprised when I clicked on a friend and the ghost wasn't immediately available like the rival ghosts.

I assume that's the case, since I "challenged" several people on my list. Looks like there's a limit of 5 per day however...

I've given up on manual drift... mini-turbos can't make up for falling off the track. Managed second place on auto compared to dead last everytime with manual. Tough choice!

I don't really have any issues with it "so far" mind you the toughest tracks I have are the star cup ones (been doing mostly time trials).

You can smoke fast staff ghosts in time trial using auto drift on a quick bike. It'll take a lot of karting before I can say it more confidently, but right now I don't see much benefit in using manual over the long haul. There are some tracks that reward it, but for the most part it's much, much easier and much faster to go auto and focus on hitting those wheelies.

The only benefit to manual IMO is for style points.

I have yet to play around with different characters. At the webpage put together by the people who did the Mario Kart DD Players' Page, which was a great meeting place for time trialers for MKDD, the early word is that for time trialing in MKW, either go Funky Kong or Baby Daisy. Two characters I loathe.

It'll be interesting to read something more analytical about the effects of different characters on different karts. If anyone sees anything, please post it here.

So last night I was forced to play using Wiimote-only as someone else was using my wheel and my second hasn't arrived yet. And it was fine! Maybe it's because of my excessive Excite Truck playing, but I didn't see any significant issues with the remote alone like IGN complained about. The wheel is definitely more comfortable, but as long as you keep a steady hand the remote by itself seems to work just fine.

Man, looking at the time trials of my friends, it's always Jason (I'm assuming that's Blue) and decrot up toward the top. You guys are good! I'm trying to refine my Grumble Mountain time, as I think I'm best at that track. I'll send you a ghost when it's done.

yea i would like to think that im good, as long as that god damn blue shell is out of the equation.

So is snaking pretty much dead in this game? I haven't unlocked Dry Bones yet, but it seems the average character can't snake for shit.

Oh and if Snaking is dead, that's a GOOD thing. Just ask DDP.

Snaking is gone, but it just shifts the focus to wheelies on straight parts of track. Instead of constantly wiggling the control stick back and forth, you're constantly shaking the wiimote up to start wheelies!

Anyone around who's interested in a game?

If so, I can start up a room. I haven't had a chance to play CAGs yet this week, so I'd like some competition. :)

Sure, Walrus, I'll be there in a sec.

Awesome.

I'll get online in a few minutes - should be before 10PM here, or before fifteen minutes from now. Just need to grab a snack and I'll be good to go. :)

Yes. I'll add you in a sec and go online.

Okay...current plan is to leave the room up for about five minutes at a time between matches, if anyone else is interested in playing later on. :)

Sorry about that Maple treeway race. Tried to not be a total dick about winning, but ended up spending to long hanging out and got second. Also looked like a total dick.
Wow, my circle of hate! Volcano and Moonview highway! At least if didn't get picked...
I fucking hate
funky kong
, but apparently he's the best besides
baby daisy
.
I'm using my Wii Wheel!
Don't want to know...
Oh my. That was atrocious. I can't believe I played so bad.
You and I both, Blue. I'm never using the Wheel again. That Shaq-fu-er had me flying all over the place...Rainbow Road especially...I'm switching back to my Thrustmaster, and I'll rejoin in a bit...

Fun games, guys! That was an intense race on Koopa Cove (I think that's what it's called). I was so close to taking you over, Blue!

I'm having problems when I'm playing games online. I can usually play 1 or 2 two games against folks and then when I try to continue I'll get a message saying that an error has occurred and I should remove my game disc and power off the Wii console and check my operation manual. I haven't seen this in any other game. Is my copy of Mario Kart bad? Anyone else experiencing this?

Same here - either you guys are really good, I sucked tonight, or I'm just not as good at the game as I thought I was.

That said, it seems I had a tendency to get knocked off at almost every jump I could, be it by items or one of the other karts.

It was fun, though...and one of these days, I'll do better.

I haven't seen that happen yet. You might want to try calling Nintendo.

Well, for my first real CAG online gaming session, after I switched to the Thrustmaster, I had a lot more fun, even if my point score didn't reflect it. We must do this again. Thanks for hosting, Walrus!

Looked for some people around 10pm Pacific and no one was on - guess I missed the big meetup earlier. I finally got a break from work to play a bit. So instead of online I went back to the grand prix. Before when I played I was winning the 50cc cups easily but getting D-B rankings. So apparently taking 5 days off and not thinking about the game made me much better. I finished off the last 4 50cc cups with 1 and 2-star rankings and then went back and got another 2-stars on the first cup. Then I tried the first 100cc cup and 3-starred it. I have no idea how as I don't think I raced particularly well (though I did win each race).

Even on the 1-star one I lost one of the races, so while that is surely a factor I have no idea what made me get D's on ones where I won every race. Unless it really is falling off the track - that only happened to me once (still 2-starred it though). I went to auto-drift as suggested earlier in this thread and it makes things so much easier. I still can't beat the first fast staff ghost - do I need to wait till I unlock a better bike? I have unlocked 4 carts, but no bikes yet. Also got Rosalina completely at random (have no idea how - star rankings, maybe? I wish the game would say why you unlocked things).

Anyway, I might be able to snag a bit of time tomorrow to play online if anyone is around.

Oh, and who the hell has the "Titsface" Mii? I may have to remove you as my 5 year-old was asking what that one said :bomb:.
